AKG K-701 Reviews
Excellent studio helpers
They make a great combo with my Audio Techica M50x, run through Sonarworks headphone calibration VST.
Perfect studio headphones
Those headphones have been very useful to me. I'm a semi-professional sound editor and sound mixer. It is such a pleasure to be able to enjoy the quality throughout the whole sound spectrum. The balance of this tool is very impressive. I've been using it for 5 years now and I am still pleased with it.
The only downside is that the heads becomes a little uncomfortable on the top and that the jack to minijack adapter tends to not be perfect. I feel they could have added the possibility to separate the cable and the headset.
On the other hand I've seen how easy it is to replace it in case. So, good point AKG !
This is of course a studio typed headset. You won't be able to use it as a field headset or just to listen to music while walking.
I highly recommend this awesome tool for your (home) studio. Again, balance is perfect. And it is a real pleasure to have open headphones. It's nice for you because you hears what's going on around you, but sound isolation is not their aim so people around you will have to opportunity to enjoy what you're listening to. It isn't a issue to me. It depends what you're looking for.
Great Headphones
Love them ! I had heard that they were somewhat lacking bass, but I didn't find that to be completely true, and the clarity is so amazing I would make the same choice again ! Great for listening to music and great for mixing too.
Brilliant!
I was kind of apprehensive when I found out that the new K701s were no longer Made in Austria. I ordered them nevertheless because of all the urban legends about this pair of cans. And so far I must say - they all seem to be true. 1. The most comfortable headphones I have ever had on my head. 2. The most spacious sound I have ever heard from headphones (seriously, after an hour I totally forgot I was listening to my mix on a pair of headphones). 3. In this price range absolute winner. In one word: brilliant
Wonderful Headphones for the recording studio and home listening.
Important: these are professional listening headphones, which are not designed for everyday, outdoor use.
Excellent sound quality for professional listening and recording: super comfortable and have a great audio reproduction with bass, mids and treble which are well balanced,
The large and open ear cups give these headphones a spacious and immersive soundstage. In fact, they feature one of the most beautifully detailed sound signatures currently available, so if you work for a recording session you know what I am talking about: you get what you mix, exactly as it is...
They are pretty light, they fit perfectly, they require zero adjustments, and they don't clamp down on your head in any way.
They're a bit pricey given the limited appeal of the open-backed design, but if that's not a problem go for them!
And if Quincy Jones himself made a custom product from this, well we should believe him...
Great!
I?m impressed by the sound of these. Crisp and clear.
The low end is a little lacking at low volumes, but soon picks up at higher volumes.
Overall great referencing headphones.
Incredibly comfortable to wear.
Very happy!
Great headphones
I use them for mixing in home studio. The sound is excellent except basses. I can hear them but I'm missing that groove.
I would recomend them to all.
Extremely accurate and clear sound. If you can concentrate on the song, you can hear everything perfectly. Besides their
cool sound, the headphones are very comfortable, to the point where you can wear them for days straight. Before I had the AKG pair , I had a piece of shitty KOSS, and after every hour or so I had to take them of because I will feel discomfort in the ear zone. As a con, even though for me is not that important , it is the lack of bass. Why I say it is not important is because it doesn't neceserally represent an major con, because you just need to familiarize with the way the headphones are sounding.
Great headphones for mixing and mastering, with a great clarity and purity, with a excellent "flatness", although, a headphone amplifier is needed.
Not for bass lovers, but otherwise great headphone
To tell you the truth, my choice of the headphones was based partly on how these headphones look. They are beautiful and their build is very good.
I listen to rock and metal. I admit, they may be lacking a bit in the bass on some songs. Guys from AKG told me that you can get a bit more bass by using K712 pads.
,
They are comfortable, you can wear them probably all day. I wear them while working. You ears will get just a little bit warm. Sound is great. They are made in china, but they are very nicely made. Build quality is very high.
There are no really bad side to this headphone except that I fear elastic bands that hold head band will weaken over time.
Sounds great!
Sounds great and now they are cheaper than when I bought them! I love them and you should give them a try.
They need some days to 'burn-in' and after that, they will start to sound nice!
This is my favourite headphone of all time. The quality/price ratio is unreal. Headphone is great for mixing as well as mastering duties (have tried both). Absolutely recommended.
You can trust these for mixes
I use them in the studio for mixing tracks while A/B testing with my main pairs of monitor speakers. They really help for getting the low-end stuff below 50hz right, but also the overall mix and spot unwanted artifacts.
Pros:
- they look really nice and professional
- they are comfortable for hours, definetly recommended for long use
Cons:
- nothing to mention here, they work great so far
Love These.
I drive these through an Apogee Duet 2 and the sound is quite impressive. Great detail and sound which i'm enjoying more and more. I hear things in these i can't in other headphones and get a better emotional involvement in the music i hear, allowing me to better feel as well as hear the music. Bit flimsy though so handle with care.
Sound quality is just truly fantastic.
Just to start with, I can say that I know fair bit about headphones.
I do build my own headphone amplifiers for many years and do own more that few various headphones to spoil myself.
I have to say that these are my favorite to the date.
Believe me, that even my HD800 are not used that often as these here, they K701 are just fantastic.
One thing need to be said though, you do have to drive these properly, without enough juice you will not hear its full potential, but just providing enough current and these do sound phenomenal, its a class for itself.
These are no new to the market, and have proved to be trusted choice for many. Providing you can give them what they need, and you will love them.
The bottom end of the spectrum is where these can show their true capabilities when you can feed them with enough power. Highs, and middle are just majestic, and every type of music and recording sounds just natural and organic. Can't fail them for anything.
I also believe that they are fantastic value, to the date these are best you can buy, not spending crazy money for the pair of headphones. I own/ed many far more expensive headphones, and some of them are not even close to these, where it comes to the sound quality and tonal balance. You will not be disappointed with these, they are just worth the listen.
I have also K7xx (limited edition) but 701 are far more natural and organic for me and my accompanied headphone amplifier.
Give them a try and have fun, out there.
Broken after 2 weeks
I received these headphones 2 weeks ago. Yesterday the lefthand side earpiece started cutting out. Tonight, the sound is gone from the left side. It appears to be a connection issue, because when i move the cable the sound comes back for a short moment.
I did a lot of research before purchasing this product. I read and watched quite a few reviews of these headphones. I also thought these were manufactured in Austria. They're manufactured in China.
However, while they were working the sound was good. I am disappointed as i'm currently in the middle of mixing recorded tracks.
Calling these high end phones is pushing it a bit. At ?225.00 for headphones, i would expect better build quality.
Incredible Quality
The AKG-K's can't be beat. True reproduction of sound. Lovely fit and feel. AKG is a leader in sound reproduction and this product is one reason why. I can highly recommend these of the every day listener to some one with more discerning ears. A great product indeed.
Superb headphones. Had these for 3 years now and are my daily headphones. Have had several pairs of sennheisers but always find myself coming back to the AKGs. Excellent depth of sound and a huge sound stage that is comparable to cans costing twice as much. Perhaps a tad light on the bass but it does not ruin the experience. Still one of the cleanest sounding cans I have used, does not sound harsh or fatiguing like some cans.
Extremely comfortable. The usual complain is the little pads under the headband but it never bothered me once. The transparent clips/tabs broke off for me but till this day I'm still not entirely sure what is it for. Aside from the cosmetic flaw I don't think you can improve too much especially at this price point. Perhaps add a removable cable connector and call it the K702
Awesome cans!
Great quality sound, playback could be called a little sterile but for critical listening and mixing these are great. Comfy to wear, but a little fragile in a bag, best to get a dedicated case if travelling with them. Pro headphones but are for mixing in quiet environment, don't provide any isolation from outside noise and sound from them will spill into microphones, these are designed to be open at sides so sound is natural not meant for recording purposes.
Simply super...
Would buy another anytime when needed.
