I’m using the Shinobi with a Canon C70. I recently got this camera and it became evident pretty quickly that its flip out lcd was pretty small, generally ok for studio conditions but completely unusable in the outdoors where I do quite a lot of filming. I decided on the Shinobi because it’s affordable and a good size for mounting either onto the cold shoe, or onto a top handle. Pros: Lightweight (200g without battery) I’m getting reasonable battery life using small compatible batteries, I tend to use multiple small batteries to keep the weight down, as opposed to fewer heavier batteries. Good for handheld. I believe the Shinobi is rated at 1000nits, easily bright enough to use in sunny exteriors. Loading LUTS is also pretty straightforward. Navigating menus and tools is...

The Atomos Shinobi 7 is one of the most important tools in my kit. I just love the menu layout, the bright 2200 nit screen, SDI in and out, the focus tool peaking black and white comic image, waveform monitor and false colour, all of which guarantee me Sharp properly exposed clips every time and professional connectivity.

Happy to have two SDI inputs and an SDI output on this monitor. I use it in combination with a BMD television studio 4K. the two input make it posible to see color corrections for the camera's as well as the regular multiview. Besides that I like the peak(check focus on a camera) and zoom functions.

Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5" 12G HDR

Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5

While the biggest impact it has had on my video recording is the provision of a larger (and more manoeuvrable) screen for monitoring than the one on my camera, I primarily bought this as a recorder. This model can record to either SD card or external SSD drive: you can choose which is your primary drive and when that fills up it can switch to the other). Having said that, it has a wonderful range of monitoring tools (just see the specs) and the video screen is bright and provides incredibly crisp and bright visuals. I haven't delved deep into colour reproduction quality, but it's sufficient for my basic needs. It has two plates for Sony NPF batteries, but can operate on just one.
