Z.Vex Mastotron

First off, I use the Mastotron with an analogue synth so my experience might not be fully relevant for any guitarists reading this. After settling on some essential time-based effects, I decided to invest in some dirt. I toyed around with a ProCo RAT for a while but it was too noisy and the controls weren't exactly to my liking. So I started shopping around again and eventually went with the Mastotron, the rationale being that it had an impedance control (manufacturers take note), was reasonably priced, and came from Z.Vex, who have a reputation for unique designs with a twist. I'd seen the photos of course but was still surprised by how small the enclosure actually is; imagine Digitech's new line of pedals, only this one's laid out horizontally, is shorter, lighter, and takes...

I use this fuzz with my guitar. Most bands I enjoy seem to use it and I was looking into grabbing one for quite some time now. Pros: - Amazing fuzz sound - Very simple operation, just three knobs, can't mess it up. Very usable range in the Tone knob. - No problems with controlling volume. In front of a slightly driven amp it doesn't push dB's too high, which was something I was worried about. Cons: - Print on the pedal came a little but misaligned hence -1 start in quality, but it's not a deal breaker by any stretch. - It's a huge pedal, pretty much the same size as my HX Stomp. Not a big con, but putting it on a pedal board might be problematic.

Kasleder Toxic Twins Dual Overdrive

This is a Bluesbreaker (left) and Tube Screamer (right) style combo pedal which manages to sound like neither of the two. Let me elaborate on that statement - while it has the sound signature of BB and TS pedals, it has its own unique identity and probably wouldn't be immediately identified as either a BB or TS. Can it sound like a BB or TS? Sure, if tweaked right. You can get some very killer tons from each side and also stack them together for a nice high gain sound. You also have clipping and bass DIP switches inside of the pedal for more tonal possibilities. The pedal is sturdily built, knobs turn smoothly without feeling cheap or brittle and the switches are footswitches are solid. The LEDs do a great job and telling you what's on and what isn't without blinding you if you look...

I use this pedal for my bass guitar and was instantly hooked on the sound and especially the versatility of the pedal. It is capable of going from "some dirt" all the way to fuzz madness where the sound is smooth. The small potentiometers inside the pedal make it even better to customize the sound. It took me about two days to set the perfect tone, now it just stays there. The filter makes it easy to dial in a dark or a bright tone depending on the mood and song, everything else is set and forget for me. I am satisfied with the aluminium housing, all around good quality. There is nothing more I would need in a fuzz pedal. Especially for bass, as it retains all of your low-end!!

I was looking for a RAT style pedal with the following characteristics: - As similar as possible to the original circuit - Made in EU, Japan or US. - More towards the vintage RAT sound but if it was modern it had to be unique Saw a really good Reverb video on RAT style comparisons and my favorite was the Big Ear Woodcutter, that sounded the best and was the kind of sound I was looking for, followed by the Rattler which was a bit more modern. The main difference being the asymmetrical clipping vs the symmetrical of the original. Unfortunately, the Woodcutter is sold out since month and there was nothing to be found in the used market, so I went for the Rattler. Overall the pedal sounds great, loads of gain available, good compression and overall that classic RAT sound with a modern twist....

Wampler Sovereign Distortion

Wampler Sovereign Distortion

Very good pedal. From start, easy to use with tonal options to suite your needs as it can adept various amps. I run this pappy in front of DT25 (clean and british crunch) and old Marshall AVT50. Wampler states that this is distortion pedal, but I found it to be much more, covering OD sounds to full blown distortion sounds, as expected. Very well build, with firm knobs it will very well adapt to any amp because of three tonal knobs (mid, tone and bright/even switch). This is not an amp in a box approach, but something you put in front of a clean amp. If used on a clean channel you will get distortion sounds from Satriani to Pantera, but put in front of a crunch amp with modest gain, man it blowed me away. It emphasis amps characteristic not coloring sound so much, but you can eq with its...

Harley Benton MiniStomp Drop Kick

similar to vox ac, cathode bias distortion! sounds and feels warm, I have been a guitarist for +25 years. This pedal is a killer bargain, if I think that some people spend 300 bucks on a distortion pedal when this one can give even these a very good run for the money. ----- some people say this a clone of the pro co rat....what are they blathering about? the rat is a type of really crazy fuzz, instead as some eagle eyed people say, this is based (hate the word 'clone'....no one is making CLONES of anything) on the suhr riot, which makes complete sense: touch sensitivity (this harley benton has SUPERB touch sensitivity, even the light responds to your touch), 3 modes, of which the middle one has a mid boost , and even the colour is similar. Someone says 'it's great, I don't know how...

Fulltone 69 MKII Pedal

Fulltone 69 MKII Pedal

Lovey fuzz pedal. Classic 60s/70s sounds and a lot of knobs to twiddle with to nail that desired tone. Sounds nice on it own but really shines with threw a boosted or dirty amp( i used an full tone OCD before it). Responds great to volume controls. Pros. Solid construction, lots of variables to tweek. Great tone. Cons. Only real con to this is the reverse polarity so you can't use a standerd Dc adapter on it. But this is what gives its great tone so beggars cant be choosers Over all a great pedal i would recommend it!

Electro Harmonix Hot Wax Dual Overdrive

Electro Harmonix Hot Wax Dual Overdrive

I chose this pedal to save some space on the board, dual pedals always offer more features in a more compact format. Anyway, I use the Hot Wax before my OCD and my Op-Amp Big Muff. The chain is perfect. The "Hot Tubes" side, the left, offers a very slight break-up of the clean signal, also useful as a boost for the clean lead lines. The "Crayon" side, the right one, sounds like a BB Preamp/Tube Screamer kind of pedal, can be distorted but still remains transparent. Stacked together they sound like the crunch channel of a Marshall I'd say, but in a good way, nothing cheesy there. And they stack great with the OCD and the Muff, the combinations available are so many, it's so convenient. The pedal offers a Blend option, to get some of your clean signal in there too, and...

JHS Pedals The AT+

This is my main drive! Period! Tried a bunch, I love also the Wampler stuff, but this for me was better for my playing and the fact that you can dial in the "high treble", makes this pedal super versatile. I used it with a DSL40C (with a Creamback speaker), great combination - you can get dark satchurated, and smooth lead tones. Used It with a Vox AC15, works well - granted, you have to cut the tone on the amp and the "Air" knob on the pedal must be taken down quite drastically, in order to have a smooth dark thick lead tone. Now, I am waiting for my Marshall Plexi amp and cabinet to play with this pedal, as I am not really a fan of amp drive, I feel like pedals are more friendly, and don't feel like I am dragging something behind me (this is what I feel with amp...
