Electro Harmonix Silencer Reviews
Good solution
Work very vell , im using it with its internal loop so it only affects drive pedals . Very solid construction, versatile for many aplications.
good gate
My mini-rig consists of Randall RD-1 head+1x12 cab, delay and a boost up front. Main guitar has EMG 57 in bridge. This setup has been completely silent in different rooms even though I play hi-gain stuff primarely. After we moved to a new house my music room has been getting bad EMI noise. This noise supressor makes everything noticeably more silent and adds extra tightness aswell. Controls I use: gate about 11 oclock, threshold 13 and reduction 13. I have discovered that the most effective knob is threshold. Gate affects the sound mostly full on. But then it cuts too much sound. X-pattern didnt change things much because I have no distortions in the loop. Only clean boost(bad monkey). When going for light crunch or guitar volume rolloff the SIlencer is better to be switched off because it starts to cut the weakened signal pretty badly. But this is not the pedals fault - rather something all gates do. EH power supply 9,6v works perfectly with the pedal. Good product specially for the price.
Electro Harmonix Silencer
cons first - only one
noise gates are not meant to change the tone of a guitar , t
this one did .
pros -
it is well made and does the job it is meant to do .
it can be used as a signal splitter so you can use 2 amps at the same time
i like this pedal apart from the fact it changed my guitars tone a little bit , it silenced noise and i was able to use it for d'jent , there are cheaper and more expensive pedals on the market and i think in future i will look at cheaper ones first , my advice to you would be to do the same .
And silences it does.
Always had a lot of noise coming straight from the wall, the overdrive and fuzz did absolutely no good to it either. Was desperate to get rid of the damn noise, put this in front and gone it was. Works like a charm, had to play with the settings for a while to get the release just right, but in the end, 100% happy with this pedal. No real con, just make sure you buy a few longer patch cables to avoid send/return cable length issues.
NOT A NOISE REDUCTION PEDAL
Brilliant pedal BUT its a GATE,the BEST GATE EVER though,but unfortunately its not a suppressor or noise reduction,i need sth to kill the hiss and hum specifically and not mute the signal,but thats just me.
As a gate,you wont find anything better especially with an effects loop thingy!!!
Very flexible
I needed a noise gate for a very noise compressor+overdrive, and it does its job. The regulations are very effective to fine tune its effect on the noise, to get the best compromise between noise and reducing cutting off the tail of the notes. The double in-out (with the send/return) makes it easy to silence both guitar and dynamic effects such as compressors/dirt boxes. It can cut a bit the tails if your boxes are very noisy. It helps feeding it a high input signal. Recommended.
Capable of handling any type of noise
In my chain this pedal is the highest hierarchically, extending its scope over the entire chain from the guitar input to the return of the fx loop of my tube amp.
Since currently i have an twofold impedance mismatch between an amp and a cab, it produces a constant low hum, making playing a single coil guitar through the setup being excessively noisy. Implementing a noise-gate X-connection with this pedal battled every type of noise that could appear in my chain, and had just enough controls to make it sound organic.
My main points of experience:
+ The noise-gate X-connection does not damage the tone, and no phase cancellation running it through a long loop has been a problem;
+ The range of control values on the knobs can make this pedal take on more functionality than just of a noise gate, so however strange it may sound, it may be played around with as well;
+ Small current draw, as of the majority of EHX pedals, favors the owners of large pedalboards;
- Even though it can be tweaked with the proper combination of "Threshold" and "Reduction", it seems to have been more intuitive to have a separate "Attack" knob. However the pedal functions just as well without it.
Noise Free
At last! Electro Harmonix Silencer is The Best ! No more Hiss or Hum.
Usage
I use the silencer at the output stage from my Zoom G5 effects processor, some of the effects can be very noisy especially when used in conjunction with the on board "Tube booster"
I found it to be brilliant in noise reduction without loosing actual punch in the output signal, over the years i have used noise reduction systems but always found then to be compressors and limiters as oppsed to actual noise reduction without dramatic loss of imput signal power, this is by far the best add on i have used and will recommend it to any serious guitarist who likes to use high end sustain, definately a 5 star product
