I have tried pretty much all the various bass drum 'systems' that are out there, and I am happy to use this on the batter side of the bass drum as it is. Other heads, such as evans emad system just takes too much energy out of the head, and makes it sound like the drum is full of blankets. This takes the right amount of ring out of the sound but leaves it lively, so there is still some top end in the mix. I think where too many drummers go wrong is they get their sound so it is right BEFORE they are playing to the band, then it sounds too dead. You want your drums to sound right WITH the band, and so it is the top overtones that help a bass drum to cut in the mix, and this drum head does it perfectly. Incidentally, for the best front head sound I actually cut about 1cm from around the...

Remo 18" P3 Colortone Reso Red

I bought this head as part of a project to change all the heads on my White Natal Arcadia kit toRemo Colortone Red at the same time as I changed my cymbals to Paiste Colorsound Red. It looks great and I have mounted some lights inside the drum to take advatage of it's see through quality. The only slightly negative aspect of the head is that I wanted to remove the Remo Logo before I applied vinyl graphics of my band logo. I found I couldnt do this as it appears the logo is not printed on top of the head but underneath the surface. I needed to have the port hole in the centre at the bottom, so had to turn the head accordigingly so as well as my Band logo the Remo log does appear, but at an angle on the left hand side. To be honest I dont think anyone notices this appart from me. I also...

This head is epic. The thump it puts out is that great bass thump that everyone dreams of - low, deep, and booming. The muffling provides the perfect sound that every modern rock or funk drummer is looking for. It's still a pretty booming drumhead, but in a live concert situation, the sound it puts out is ideal. In a studio, additional muffling is still required, but even with a pillow in the drum, it sounds better than any other bass drum head I've ever heard. My best friend owns an Evans EMAD, which he and others claim is the best bass head ever. I am here to say that this beats the EMAD hands down. Get it.

Evans 18" EMAD Calftone Bass Drum

Like the sound a lot. Brings a nice warm sound out of my new bass drum. Been using the 2cm muffler which is working great; with no pillow in my bass drum, I get just the right amount of tone vs muffling. A little afraid to play hard on it but so far so good. The head itself looks great. For such a beautiful head though, there's an unfortunate nitpick - they put the barcode and all the ugly printed info on the metal rim of the head right over the Evans Calftone text. So if I put on the head right side up, with the text right side up and the "Evans" brand text in the top middle, like it should be (rather than sideways or upside down), I have to look at the barcode the whole time I'm playing, which spoils the look. It's the same on the non-EMAD version, which I have on the...
