Gold Tone AC-1 5 String Openback Banjo
Based on 5 reviews
As an aspiring banjo player, I did my research, and I have found this is the cheapest banjo that still comes as recommended by veteran players. As advertised, Gold Tone does not skimp on quality control and only ships instruments that are ready to be played. Having received it, I examined it in accordance with online tutorials. Every part of the instrument, from the head tension, to action, to bridge placement, was adjusted correctly, ensuring I did not have to learn to set up a banjo the first moment I held it in my hands (and there's a lot to learn about banjo setup!). All I had to do is tune it. Learning to play it is a pleasure, as it rings bright and clear, and stays in tune for a long time. It is pretty loud, despite the open back. A resonator can be bought from Gold Tone to attach...

i have been playing banjo for several years, and needed to purchase a decent instrument for live performance. This banjo had lots of great reviews, and completely lived up to everything i have heard. The Banjo does not come set up, as the bridge would probably break in transit, as it is not fixed, but this is fine as a) most luthiers can do this very easily, and b) the pickup i bought for the banjo was a bridge pickup anyway, so i would have to replace it. The strings that come on the banjo are not too bad either, though i did choose to replace them after a few weeks with a high quality pack, i gigged with the original strings on at first, and they sounded fine in small venues. The best feature for me, is that the banjo holds tuning quite well. Although all banjos are sensitive to heat...
Deering Goodtime Two Banjo

This was my first banjo. Kept it and played it for 3 years and then I had to sell it. I still miss this instrument now a days. PRO Quality Banjo at reasonable price. Bright and happy tone. Very recommended for beginners. Kept is price steady even after many years. I consider it a good investment. CONS You will miss it if you sell it. (Con but a totally subjective one) after playing them both I must admit that I prefer the version with no resonator. If u are looking for a more "sturdy" sound you may wanna go with a different kind of wood. A great product, at a great price from a top seller. Even if it took a very long time (months!!) to get here were I live, cause it was not available when I ordered it and there was some delivery issues. Worth it! 100%

Let me start off by saying I purchased this instrument about 2 years ago, so I've played it often enough to say I've gotten a good impression about it. I ordered it is part of a bundle with a budget case and a brown minotaur leather strap (case and strap are great, too, very aesthetic, no issues). The order arrived in a tight sealed box and the instrument arrived without a scratch. About the instrument: The build quality is really solid, it's pretty heavy on account of the type of wood it's made of. I had never played a banjo before - I am a multi-instrumentalist and I decided that I would learn - so I had no comparison, but I got used to the heaviness, besides chances are you'll mostly play it sitting down anyway and the heaviness really amounts to a feeling you've got a solid,...

Very well made banjo, great hardware and woodwork. Super easy to play. Has really nice overtones and a bit of growl. I bought it to replace my cheap HArley Benton 5-string. When I received it the head seemed way too tight and the outside bridge legs were not making firm contact with the head. I just loosened the head tension and it resolved this problem and alsomade the tone better. All in all I am very happy with this purchase and it should serve well me for years or until I can spend over a thousand Euros for a new banjo.
Richwood RMB-606 Guitar Banjo

An all mahogany Guitar Banjo with an actual flange is a rarity, and other than not being walnut is appointed similarly to a GB1. The lack of a tone ring saves loads of weight and your right shoulder. I ordered 2 units, one arrived with the resonator detached, which was somewhat of a puzzle to solve. The other had some resonator attachment screws loose in the packaging and one of the splined nuts had to be reinstalled into the resonator. The fit and finish are better than expected other than the attachment of the resonators, as they are a real challenge, so just be aware and very patient. This should be expected with asian made products in the sub $300 neighborhood. All in at like $7.71 shy of 8bills for 2 Guitar Banjos with cases ain't bad. Thanx TMH

OK so it's not a Ludwig. It has a couple of flaws but they are quite cheap and simple to rectify. First you need to replace the vellum. Like all BJs these days, it's plastic and nasty. Even quite expensive instruments come this way these days so it's no big deal. A calf skin vellum improves it tremendously. Next replace the strings and the tuner heads and you have a good banjolele after setting it all up properly. For the money, you can't go wrong. It can compete with an Ozark which costs 3 or 4 times as much.
Harley Benton HBJ-24 Short Scale Tenor Banjo
Based on 10 reviews
This is my first tenor banjo and I was pleasantly surprised by it - the action is very low, it’s easy to play and sounds pleasant for the money. Unfortunately it doesn’t have much of the characteristic banjo “twang” — but you can’t really expect everything at this ridiculously affordable price point, can you? It’s tuned to CGDA by default and plays quite well, but I mostly play Irish trad so retuned it to GDAE. Unfortunately as many others have remarked, the tuners don’t really hold tuning well at this much lower tension — and the banjo is also less in tune with itself (eg some o stave intervals are off while others are OK). I also had to tighten the banjo head to get the proper sound back (but that’s actually easy, just search...

I bought this in a spur of the moment purchase. I’d never played any instrument in my life, and had always wanted to learn to play banjo. I didn’t want to spend too much, yet feared a €111 banjo may end up being a waste of money. I was wrong. The sound is great, it’s been easy to pick up and start learning, and it’s brought great joy to me. One month on I see massive progress, and I’m now browsing for “Better” banjos - just don’t tell that to my wife!

Another absolute win from the Harley Benton team. I was put off buying a banjo for many years as everyone claims that to get a "good" one you have to spend £5-600+ and that was just too much for me merely to "test the water"... However, I'm really glad I chanced this purchase. I figured it was so cheap that it wouldn't be a great loss if it turned out to be a piece of junk but, just.... WOW ! My friend has a banjo that he paid 800 euro for and I shall not name the manufacturer but it's made by one of the premier/big banjo producers and this banjo, in my opinion, plays and sounds just as good. It's crazy. There is NOTHING low quality about this instrument to my eyes/ears. It really is a classy looking banjo and I would easily have expected to pay a lot more...
