For £68 you really can't complain, Bought for a friend's birthday present and was actually put together better than my 50's reissue MIM Strat. Ideal as a learning guitar so if it's not for you then you haven't wasted a ton of money on it.

Could be very good value

Unpacking the guitar I was pleasantly surprised by how good the finish appeared and generally how well made the guitar appeared to be - particularly at this low price point. I bought the guitar to modify and have removed the sunburst finish - this was very hard work and it should survive minor knocks quite well.

The neck and fretboard are comfortable and the frets are reasonably well finished although would benefit from levelling and polishing, but this is often true of guitars at many times the price.

Acoustically the guitar was pleasingly resonant and appeared easy to tune. The tremolo is fitted with 3 springs and in this case it is flat on the body rather than floating (press down only, no room to lift). Given that the tremolo is of a very light construction this may contribute to the tuning stability.

The pickups and controls work adequately but are fairly low powered and a little thin sounding when plugged in.

Unfortunately when I came to level and polish the frets I discovered a spiral twist in the neck, only a few degrees but enough to make a truly good set up impossible. This is probably a rare fault rather than a general issue.

Overall, a good beginners guitar at the price point and had I not had the issue with the neck I would have given it an extra star

Amazing starter guitar

I've never played guitar before and ordered the starter kit including the ST-20 SB after considering a few other options. So far it hasn't disappointed. It's weighty, there's no sharp edges or rough finish and it feels great to play ( or attempt to play at least ). Considering the entire kit including postage cost less than a Squier bullet I can't recommend this guitar enough for someone who wants to start off cheap and see if they enjoy playing

The guitar arrived super fast, it amazes me how quickly it comes through the door.

Very well packed and protected. No damage to the guitar whatsoever.

My first impression is that for the amount of money spent its one hell of a good deal.

In general I would say the instrument is not a condition to be picked up and start jamming but investing a bit of time setting up you end up with a very playable guitar. Ideal for a student I believe.

The pickups are ceramic single coils, the sound is not bad but I am replacing these anyway.

The Tuning pegs again are cheap; they were loosely installed on the headstock! I I had to bring out a box spanner which sorted it in a couple of minutes.

The action and intonation were good. The bridge is again cheap but useable. The finish on the body I find very good.

This is not my first purchase from H.B , overall I believe they provide excellent value for money.

A professional's view

I'm a guitar teacher and professional musician. I've played hundreds of guitars owing to the fact that I also have a small shop selling vintage guitars. I bought this guitar as I needed a student instrument for people wanting to try guitar before finding and buying their own. This is superb value and here's why...

Thinking back to when I bought it my initial thoughts were how nice it looked; the grain of the body, the feel of the neck and the general finish. It's also quite weighty which feels reassuringly good. On a lot of cheaper guitars you can get sharp fret ends or cheap tuners. Also I felt the set up was pretty decent; it felt nice to play. Another big thing that I look at is tuners- the machine heads are very solid. This is so important for a beginner because tuning is initially difficult and out of tune guitars sound bad! I found that this held tune really well. A massive plus.

Looking at other instruments on the market, specifically the more famous manufacturer's budget models, I'd have to say it's a tie. But the really amazing thing is the price- it's just so cheap yet really decent quality for a starter guitar. I've since recommended this instrument to students who have bought it and found them to be consistent in what I've talked about above.

Very Impressive.

I have literally just unpacked this Strat and plugged it in. A very nice guitar indeed.

For £64 it is frankly amazing. There's just nothing more to add!!! Or perhaps there is: maybe I should get one more.
