Soulo Mute Adjustable Trumpet Cup Mute

Brilliant mute for big band work. With a bit of experimentation you can get quite a range of sound from this mute. The adjustable cup means you don't have to spend hours filing the corks down to get a tighter cup sound. I bought one to try and emulate the sound of my old H&B cup that's been around the block a few too many times and it gets it bang on. It blends perfectly into a section of H&B and perfectly replicates that glossy vintage sound. The intonation with this mute in is fantastic! That for me was one plus over other cup mutes I've tried. In my experience, a cup mute is an exercise in compromise between not having to fight it in terms of intonation and getting a good sound from it. With this mute you don't have to settle for one or the other, you really can have both!
Best Brass Cup Trumpet Mute

Extremely well made. Refined, consistent sound over entire range, no tuning problems at all, both with the cup fitted or the straight mute alone. Easy to adjust the cup. I prefer sound and response of the straight mute to other metal straight mutes (including Best Brass, the shape is different). I can use this mute in any situation as a straight or a cup and also as a practice mute with the cup close to the bell. I can play 99%+ of what I need either open or with this one mute. It probably won't suit players who want the 'traditional' cup mute sound of H&B or Ray Robinson, who enjoy fiddling around filing corks to get the thing in tune etc. This mute works straight from the box and the sound will be too refined for them. Nothing wrong with tradition, but perhaps some of us can move...
Denis Wick DW5531 Trumpet Cup

I play Bach Vincent 37 trumpet for 8 years and this product has been another great thing in my life. This is an interesting mute, in that the cup is adjustable - you can slide it closer to the bell to create a different sound. I have found that it is possible to achieve a sound very similar to a stone lined cup mute by bringing the cup very close to the bell. Used without the cup, this mute is a dark toned straight mute. A single mute with a variety of different sounds. This is an interesting mute, in that the cup is adjustable - you can slide it closer to the bell to create a different sound. Humes & Berg New Stone Lined ST-102 Cup

A super classic cup mute sound and pretty much essential for any regular player of swinging big band music. The most common cup mute in any big band playing Basie, Ellington, Herman and others of the mid-century repertoire. Vastly superior to the Denis Wick (urgh, avoid at all costs). Not as well built as some other (generally more expensive) mutes - paint is thin and cracks easily, corks can become detached and wear quite quickly. However these are minor issues in what is basically an essential part of any mute collection.
