The gauges on these strings have been taken from other (considerably more expensive) string manufacturers for the needs of 8 string guitars. However, the way I use them is discard (save) the first and last string and use the 13-64 as baritone gauges on a 6-string guitar. They are perfect since they have slightly more tension than other sets which are meant for baritone, meaning you will not have loose strings, therefore tuning issues. The other great advantage is this is the first affordable set that allows you to do this, meaning you can take this set to a luthier to set up your guitar and not worry too much if you end up discarding them. All I see with this set is win-win all around.

I've mostly been using Dunlop strings since my move to using 8 string guitars, they've been fine for the most part, but the tension is a little inconsistent across the set (the low B is far tighter than the rest, making the F sharp feel floppy in comparison) and they seem to go dead much quicker than my usual brand of string, D'Addario. Getting D'addario 8 string sets for a reasonable price, and locally, is difficult, so while shopping for some other bits I took a chance on the Framus set and so far I'm very impressed. Tuning stability is fantastic, they bed in very quickly after the first tune up. The tension across the set is far more balanced, allowing for tight playing on the low strings and wide bends on the higher ones, even on a longer scale 8 string. The sound is on par with...

The gauges on these strings are the same as other (considerably more expensive) string manufacturers for the needs of 8-string guitars. However, the way I use them is not use the first and last string and use the 13-64 as baritone gauges on a 6-string guitar. They are perfect since they have slightly more tension than other sets which are meant for baritone, meaning you will not have loose strings, therefore tuning issues (try a .064 on a slightly better tuner to see how much it jumps from sharp to flat if there is not enough tension). The other great advantage is this is the first affordable set that allows you to do this, meaning you can use it as a standard set, change it more often if you feel like it (or keep one as backup) and not worry too much about the cost. The Ernie Ball 2625 string set for was one of the first on the market for 8 string players, and as with all EB strings they are bright, smooth and long lasting. Upon purchase of an eight string I was reasonably skeptical regarding one of the major manufacturers getting the gauges right, and resigned myself to mixing and matching to get the desired tensions. I was therefor pleasantly surprised to find the 2625 set absolutely bang on! That said, scale length and tuning become serious factors... tuning too much below standard on anything under a 27inch scale length may present a very floppy 8th string. However, swapping out the supplied .74 for a .80 single string is no huge inconvenience. Recording with Slinky‘s is always a joy, and this set is no exception, retaining a natural feel...

I've been getting my hand at 8-string guitar for a good 2 years now, and having a good intonation has always been a nightmare on this particular guitar (a fairly cheap Ibanez RGA8). I have tried many, many, many different string sets, combination of sets and tunings (from F#BEADGBE over CGCGCFAD over EADGCEAD and variations, for those interested), each time spending hours on adjusting bridge, saddle, even the trussrod if needed. After slapping these babies on, I could go back to the regular F#BEADF#BE tuning I prefer lately, the intonation was just perfect from the get go and I didn't have to adjust anything on the guitar. I did however have to drill out the hole on the machine head to have the 8th string pass through it (and yes, I knew what I was doing), so you might want to double...

for the longest time, a lot of bigger companies just didn?t get the balance of their string gauges correct for 8 strings guitars with a 27" plus scale length, and finding a balanced set was almost impossible without having to just make up your own. I would say this particular set is pretty much perfectly balanced for keeping an 8 string set up in standard tuning (I use the 74 as a low E), and at a non-ridiculous price point, like some other brands. Pros - The pricing on these is fair for what you get - String gauges are balanced, and so won't leave you in a scenario where you have super heavy strings on the high end, and flubby low strings (Exactly what Earnie Ball used to put out). - The low string is tapered to allow it to pass through a standard sized tuner, which is an issue...

I bought these when I purchased my new 8 string, Ibanez S8QM as I wanted to try something heavier to the 9-65 set which came with the guitar. The D'Addario string set came covered in a plastic wallet inside a cardboard box. For anyone who hasn't used D'Addario strings before, each string comes with a different coloured ball end, which are indicated on the plastic wallet, making re-stringing a breeze and add some colour to the bridge of the guitar. The strings are very bright sounding and remain feeling fresh for a long time, which for me was roughly a month of daily practise and playing sessions, which is something I had never been able to achieve with other string brands. I would definitely recommend this set for any 8 string guitar user.

great strings, but they were sadly too short for me. I play an Agile Septor 830 with the reverse headstock, so my low F# string needs to be really long, sadly these were just about an inch too short! I strung my top 6 with them and used the older bottom strings. They were great for that though! Reasonably balanced tension across the fretboard and a round tone. MILES BETTER THAN EARNIE BALL. EB have horrific tension across the fretboard and corrode easily. I'd take these any day of the week if I used a normal 8 string. The tone of these is Great for rock, but possibly not for Djent. That said, you can Djent them, you just have to work the EQ settings out properly and live with a little less attack than you would otherwise have from a Hex core set of strings. The lowest .076 string does not fit a 27" scale. The full gauge (thickness) of the string does not begin until about 26,5" or so, you should take this into consideration if you have, for example, a Harley Benton 27.1" 7-string baritone like I do, or any other guitar that's more in baritone scale. The first ~20 cm or so of the lowest string is a thinner part. Can't complain about quality or sound too much, just bummed that I need to look for a separate F-string to do some 'shuggah.
