For me, this snare is near perfect. It's articulate, very responsive and 'fast'. By this I mean it gives an immediate response to the playing of both very delicate grace notes and louder back beats. It will identify any technical weaknesses in your playing, which I think is a plus! The tone is well balanced and gives both a full range of frequencies as well as having a crisp cut through, which means it is not lost in the mix when the rest of the band show up. The full characteristics of the drum are best appreciated when it's under the microphone and in the recording setting. Then it's quality and nature really shines through. I compared this side by side with a 1974 Acrolite, and the 6.5" version of the same drum. I initially intended to buy the 6.5" model, thinking this...

I have used this drum for live shows and rehearsals, while playing post-rock, shoegaze, hardcore. Craftmanship on this drum is sublime. It looks and feels outstanding. Strainer is well built and works great. Lugs are sturdy. The snare is responsive and attack is strong. Sound is warm and rich with some overtones while tuned low, but easily muffled by moongel. Although when tuned high, this drum shines and produces roaring crack, that is instense with momentary sustain. Combine all of this with a great price and you got yourself excellent drum. Fortunately i could not find any disadvantages on this snare.

This snare is one of the most versatile Aluminium snares on the market. The Die Cast hoops dry up a lot of the overtones and the 6.5 depth give it tons of room if you want to go for deep/gushy snare sounds. Yet when you crank this up the crack and sharpness of the backbeat will keep any band moving. This is a super versatile instrument. Would highly recommend.

I've been playing this snare for almost a year and it is flawless. Really. It is what we expect from a brand like DW at this price. When played, one can understand the difference that a high end instrument like this makes. It feels expensive. It feels professional and reliable. There is a "weight" to our playing that makes the drums sound so much better. The snare does not disappoint. Personally, I like die-cast hoops so I replaced the true hoops but it is a matter of preference. The snare is really good and there wasn't even the need to change the heads. Best snare that I own and definitely recommended to anyone looking for one with an aluminum shell. It is expensive but well worth it. Would buy again.
