Tonal timebomb?
Bought to replace on my Ovation Elite. As is common my original one the volume pot started producing less to no output. Itâs fair to say these pre-amps work excellently. I use the pre shape with the eq set flat and always marvel at the unique clarity and separated projection across the strings. I get that the roundback guitars were designed concurrently with these electronics over the years. Still, they sound fab and is a necessary purchase if your pre amp has failed. The tuner works fine and the gain is powerful, ample and clean. The bad point, I worry at the longevity of these products. The plastic feels not even close to the sturdiness/hardness of the older Ovation variants like the OP24 and FET 3 pre amps. Which makes me question the quality of the electronics themselves . To highlight, I have 2 other vintage Ovations with the older pre amps with âoriginalâ pre amps still working as intended, we are talking about guitars 30 to 40 years old. So this is the only negative I feel must be at least considered. The Op pro studio pre amp of the higher model guitars may be different? In conclusion, you wonât be dissatisfied with sound and original fit. We all keep our fingers crossed as to the life span, whilst enjoying the Ovation rasp and bell like tone. Hope this helps.
Happy Customer
My customer was very happy to get his guitar back quickly and working again like new.
Replacement preamp
I bought this as a replacement for my previous OP-PRO. I can't speak for how long it will last, as these are notorious for going bad. But when they work, they are some of the best sounding preamps going. There's almost zero noise and the pre-shape Ovation has incorporated is so good, you almost don't even need to tough the EQ. It's actually good enough to record direct, which is rare for an acoustic preamp. Ovation has excelled at their preamp tech, hopefully with this newer version, the problems the older one had (bad volume control) will be a thing of the past.
Same problem as the original part
At 11 months the volume control on the preamp malfunctioned, just like the original preamp that came with the guitar. Other than a recurring issue that Ovation apparently hasn't fixed, it sounds great.
