In the beginning it was a little tricky to tune as low as I wanted this big floor tom. The single ply stock drum head was the problem. After replacing it with a remo emperor coated, I got that low beefy sound, even without using muffling. Great Yamaha drum in super low price.

I was looking for the archetypal mahogany shell sound and this has delivered : rich, well-rounded, thunderous low end. I use it primarily as a standalone, high impact element in live performance. When mic'd up and run through a concert PA this can achieve thrilling sonic presence. Good durable hardware means this stands up to touring and transit. Not the cheapest option but the high build quality and sonic power makes for good value. I would say - if you're not too picky about sound character in a floor tom I would recommend cheaper alternatives, perhaps this is more for anyone chasing the specific Mahogany character. There are Gretsch Catalina demo videos online where you can listen first if you haven't already.

Bought this as an addition to my Decade kit. Pricy but what a fantastic sound. Took me a while to tune it but creates an original deep sound.

This is a great addition to my set, good price. Big and beefy. This drum (as well as other stage custom drums) had crooked washers by the vent-screw. Easily fixed but very annoying!
