It does the job really well!

This is my first time experience with a piccolo snare drum and I can appreciate the sound a lot. It is super crisp and slightly higher-pitched than a normal 14" snare due to the smaller diameter, of course, and the shallow depth gives is a drier, brighter, tone. However, the brass gives it a lot of tone. The shallow depth does not make it sound dead by any means.

The tuning range seems to suffer a little from the shallow depth, but that is normal and expected. Still, I would have liked for Pearl to offer piccolo snares that are at least 4" or 5" deep. But those snare drums are not very popular on the market. I cannot find any, in fact.

And perhaps more lugs would have been a better asset for this drum. But everything is great. I bet that this snare would sound quite cutting especially with a close microphone as opposed to room microphone.

Overall, I am very satisfied. If you want a particular higher "crack" sound, you will not be disappointed. I was going to forget to mention that I personally like to tune the bottom head a perfect 5th above the batter head. I find that this gives me the most pleasing tone!

Side snare? Main snare? Why not both?

It's a super 3x13 brass piccolo by Pearl. should be used when you want a compressed, dense sound.
