Rupert Neve Designs 511

Based on 7 reviews
The Neve Designs Portico 511 is a great microphone preamp, capable of everything from clear and uncolored to thick and vibey sounds. The adjustable amount of silk introduces 3rd order harmonics that can be just what the doctor ordered on certain voices and other sound sources. The sweepable highpass filter is a great feature to have on any preamp to reduce unwanted rumble or lowend sounds from fans, traffic and many other sources. Tip: Record just the ambient noise of your room with the highpass off, and then bring up the signal high in your DAW and check what's going on at the bottom. All the unwanted lowfrequency energy will steal headroom when hitting your AD converters and to get rid of it before the converters is so much better than to highpass inside your DAW later. Trust me on...
SSL 500-Series Bus Compressor MkII

Based on 6 reviews
I have been mixing my own productions in the box for almost a decade, usually into an emulated version of this compressor. There's something undeniable about the sound of this unit. It's subtle but there's a "polish" that this adds to the signal that's very musical and familiar. Compared to the top-shelf plug-ins I'd been using before this has seems to open up the stereo field a bit more and compress in a slightly groovier and "analogue" way. Definitely recommended if you're looking for that SSL sound and glue. I didn't consider the other versions of this in the 500 series format but didn't feel the need to when SSL themselves can deliver this at a competitive price.
Midas Parametric Equaliser 512 V2

I use this along with the 512 compressor and 502 preamp for a full channel strip for recording electric guitar. Design wise, I've never been a fan of the dual potentiometer arrangement, but there's little ither choice to fit a full parameter 4 band EQ into a 500 series format. That said, you get used to it. What I do like on all these midas 500 series units in the illumination on all switches. This seems like something small but most other brands skimp on this and it's so handy to see whether something is engaged or not at a glance without having to get up or tilt your head to see if something is depressed or not. It's possible to get some fairly aggressive 'correction' out of this EQ, but I use it to add some high mid and low grit to electric guitar. Works really well. I'm not...
Elysia nvelope 500

Based on 5 reviews
Was going to Buy two Spl tdx but after reading alot of reviews about this decided to take the plunge . Already knew Elysia does incredible gear and is known for quality, so expected this to be of very high standard but never knew this was going to sound so amazing and so constructive (rather than destructive). Literally enhances everything you put through it especially Drums and Bass. The features are various and insane (eq, td & eq split etc) . Cant recommend this enough for those you want a real transient designer rather than a plugin. I have various Td plugins from multiple reputable companies but none of them even come close to this hardware !! Super happy with the nvelope !!! 😊
IGS Audio S-Type 500 VU

Based on 5 reviews
Prior to getting this I was using a Shadow Hills Dual Vandergraph. Don't get me wrong, the SHDV is a great piece of compressor, if you were to describe the SHDV in one word, it's PHAT. But I do alot of pop, R&B and electronic-based music and I felt that the SHDV didn't suit my needs, it narrowed the stereo image slightly and had too much low-mid saturation which didn't help the mixes at all. Was trawling through the internet and came across the S-Type which was touted as an SSL clone. I've used an actual SSL G-Comp on many projects at a studio I frequently mix out of and I knew how a G-Comp sounded. Plugged it in, ran a mix through it and wow. Just wow. The stereo imaging is wider, the highs are clearer and overall it just sounds close. Well done IGS Audio. Knobs are solid and...
Elysia xfilter 500

Based on 5 reviews
Amazing piece of kit, I now have an addiction to the series 500 modules, this is my 3rd purchase as I lacked and eq in my lunchbox. After a little research I narrowed it down to this eq from other reviews and also price. For the price this eq is amazing. very transparent and clean. no matter how hard you drive it it still doesn't over do it, it has a nack of bringing things out of the mix and cleaning them up without destroying the sound or adding any unwanted frequencies. im running almost everything through it now and when I compare what I had before to what I have now mixdown wise things have stepped un another level thanks to the xfliter 500.
WES Audio Dione

Based on 5 reviews
Everyone knows the famous ssl bus compressor. And it's famous for a reason. It has that color we all know, and ofcourse the infamous glue. The dione has all that and more. From blend knob to sidechain features to 2 types of thd. But the definite fame changer is the fact that you can digitally control it like a plugin, which is amazing for recall purposes alone. But also you can externally sidechain like you would with any other plugin, without having to plug in extra cables... just straight from your DAW. Also the automation possibilities are endless. Needless to say wes audio dione is a no brainer, like all of their gear honestly
Neve 1073LB Preampmodule 500er API

Based on 5 reviews
Very good preamp! Just tried it on vocal compared to RME Fireface. Neve is more present and detailed. Better frequencies. Every recorded word is processed differently. It gives life to the recorded material. It sings. Cons: a 1000€ Module does not have a mounting key in the box. This is the first 500 unit I bought and mounted it into the “Midas” frame. And didn’t have a key. So after I bought the unit and the frame for more than 1200€, I had to search a mounting key.
Rupert Neve Designs R10

I am very happy with the RND R10 500 series rack. I particularly chose to buy this high quality rack (rather than a cheap one) because of the importance to me of ultra-low-noise signal paths. I have had no problems in that regard. It appears to be as compatible as it needs to be; I have used Millennia Media, Inward Connections, and AEA modules so far. The attachment nuts on the front have been designed to move a little, to suit modules with slightly inaccurately-drilled holes; to stop them rattling on unused slots, use little washers under the spare screws. The only disappointment is that it does not include some blanks to cover the unused slots.
IGS Audio Rubber Bands 500 Mastering EQ

Based on 4 reviews
I'm sure there are even better Pulteq clones out there, but as far as I'm concerned, this one is already good enough for mastering. Since it has no tube, the low end is a little bit weaker than in the 19'' rack version, but still excellent. Now, having two different frequency settings in the low end is a very, very convenient feature. The high end is where it really shines: It's super clear and smooth as silk. The pots feel sturdy, and their being stepped is excellent for setting recall. I totally recommend this device. I couldn't do without it, now that I've tried it.
