Tascam DR-40X

Excellent

I really like this product . Can't really talk about technical specs. It's not my area of expertise. The recordings in the studio turn out great. It's even better at home with just the acoustic and voice. As an interface it's also good. Easy to download info from the card onto the pc and its really easy to use.

Very good for field recordings

Easy to use, compact and a very robust. I use it a lot for field recordings. I wish the wind shield would be included, it's a must have for outdoor recording sessions. Add it to the basket right away

Works Remarkably Well

I used this to record audio of an amateur theatre production to accompany a video. I ran in an XLR stereo mix from the sound desk (line level) and recorded the room with the built-in mics. I was able to blend these together after and ended up with a remarkably good sound for the price. Saved a lot of time compared to mixing a multitrack recording. Very pleased with this purchase.

Still a great buy for an old model

I've been watching a lot of videos about handheld recorders for sometime now and decided to buy my first recorder, the Tascam DR-40X. The best part about this buy is the X-Y, A-B mic configuration. I record lots of ambience for work so I love that feature. Another is how light weight it is. Some might suggest that it feels like a toy because of its plastic body but I don't mind it. I've heard and read that some people experienced problems with it having high internal noise. It did not happen on mine. The only problem I have with the DR-40X is battery life. Though It probably depends on the batteries that is used. Mine drains fast when the phantom power is used. Aside from that, all is good!

Great recorder for beginners!

I'm a professional sound designer, and tend to record both loud and quiet sources for processing.

This recorder is super handy to have if you're on-the-go and tend to record loud sources. I recorded some of my best airplane sounds with this!

That being said, quieter sources become an issue due to the signal-to-noise ration. If you need to pump up the gain considerably, you can expect to hear some self-induced noise, which can be problematic. Sure, noise profiling and filtering is a thing, but that will inevitably affect your processed sounds.

As for the build, it is somewhat plastic-y but solid enough to carry around in a bag without breaking anything.

I can definitely recommend this one for louder sources!

Does the job

Bought this for recording live sets (dj), and for that it does the job, easy to navigate and satisfying battery life

Perfect

I love this device. I had a Tascam wireless which i broke and chose to go with this one. The battery life is amazing, the features are awesome - it can be a full-fledged input device on your favorite DAW. It can handle the room with the angled mics and then plug in your choice of two channels from your mixer (L/R vocals, mixer sum, etc.). The buttons feel sturdy and the overall quality is very nice.

The best portable mic i have owned

This is the best mic and sound recorder i have owned so far and for the price it's a steal if you ask me. The sound quality of the mics are top notch as well. It also feels realy sturdy even if it's just a plastic casing.

Awesome Portable Device

Truly love this piece of equipment.

I am a Foley artist amongst other things, and this has opened up so many doors for on the move recording. Its so versatile.
