Xotic EP Booster 5-stars Reviews
I love this pedal!
I was looking for a clean signal boost for my Fender Blues Junior III to get a natural crunch/overdrive from my amp. Being still relatively new to the guitar, I wasn't aware of the legendary EchoPlex (that this is based upon) that was used and found to give that boost to tone. I'm using this in combination with a Maxon OD-808. With this pedal I can keep the overdrive low on the tubescreamer and really bring out the characteristics of the amp. Like others reviews have stated, this pedal for me is permanently switched on to get the benefits of that clarity of tone. I find it helps with "cutting through the mix", although I appreciate some would have an issue with a pre-amp/clean boost "colouring" their tone.
Great
What a great pedal. It blends so well with my amp. It doesn't take away or cover up any of the already awesome tones of my amp, it just adds a little extra flavour to them. It ads a bit of overdrive that sounds like your amps is doing it naturally. It doesn't overpower any of the characteristics of the amp when set fairly low. Once you start to push it past 12 o clock a little bit, then the Van Halen sounds start coming out. It is great for playing Van Halen stuff, especially through a Marshall Plexi style amp. I use mine to push my Plexi when I want some more umf! I also use another pedal along side it and they work perfectly together. My one and only gripe with this pedal is that it adds a whole lot of bottom end, which is great for a lot of amps, but my Marshall Plexi has already got enough bottom end to shatter any windows within a 5 mile radius. I'd still highly recommend trying it out at some point. It may seem expensive for a tiny pedal with one knob, but it really is great if a good boost is what you are after.
Never play without it
I use the ep booster as my "always on" pedal at the start of my pedalboard. It's a great preamp pedal and it really brightens up your pickups and adds clarity and definition, very useful for dark sounding humbukers and p-90s. The internal dip switches really allow you to tweak this pedal to perfectly suit your guitar. The pedal also has a tonne of volume so it can be used as a clean volume boost for solos too.
Extremely high quality pedal from the guys at xotic, and in a great small package, which is perfect, cause every guitarist knows that pedalboard real estate can be very hard to find.
My favourite pedal in the world.
I bought this pedal 2 months ago and since then, I've never turned it off. Even if you set the boost knob in the lowest setting it still makes your tone massive. Very reliable and works really well with my OCD by Fulltone.
Absolutly fantastic !
Today’s review is on a pedal that I’ve now owned for about a year, the Xotic EP Booster. Extremely simple to use, this pedal only has one dial. So what does this pedal do exactly? Well its a pre-amp, but not just any pre-amp. This particular pre-amp is modeled after the one that would be found in an old Echoplex. Truth be told, many great guitarist like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen would use an Echoplex, minus the echo. Why? Well it coloured the tone a bit, gave it a boost, and all around just produced an extra shimmer or sparkle if you will. Just take a close look at the features of this pedal, great !
There are many ways to use the Xotic EP Booster. One way is kick it on for solos to give your lead a little extra boost and thickness to stand out in the mix. Another way is to leave it on all the time, making your tone fatter. Other people like to stack the EP Booster with overdrive and fuzz pedals to make the sound a bit more powerful. Personally, I like to use it as a clean boost. Really there are a variety of ways to use the EP Boost, you just gotta experiment.
If you are a strat player who plays through Fender amps, you know that sometimes you would love a Marshall because of the great midrange it provides. But you are not willing to give up those glorious Fender cleans. Thats where the EP Booster comes in. Give its that Marshall style fattening, while maintaining the great cleans of the amp. If you open up the EP Booster, you’ll notice that there are two internal dip switches to customize the tone a bit. The first switch (1) is a bass boost, and the second (2) is a bright switch. I found having the bright switch on really made a Les Paul come to life. Many like the bass boost for a Strat. Also I forgot to mention, that the main dial on the EP Booster controls the intensity of the effect. Cranking that dial means more output.
Overall, I must say that I really like this pedal. I especially like its small size, making it really easy to travel with. Sometimes when I’m going to small jams, I pack this pedal right in my guitar case, so my tone stands out a bit at the jam, without the need to carry a huge pedal board
Buy it !
best booster pedal
tone suffering? press this little baby and your sound will become sweet, big and fat. no more to say. I hate short reviews but you have to try it. seriously.
A "must buy"
The best pedal I´ve ever bought. I´ve dialed it down to minimum boost and keep it on all of the time. It lifts my amp´s sound to a whole new level. If I turn it off the amp still sounds good but with the pedal on it just gives it that extra edge. You can of course use it as it was intended, as a boost pedal. As such it works great. The internal dip switches help you shape the sound to your liking. It´s a solid build that breathes quality and it´s unbelievable that they managed to cram in everything swell as room for a 9 volt battery! I definitely recommend this product. Buy it, you won´t regret it.
