I upgraded an ovation-type guitar that I bought in the early 90's. The guitar itself doesn't sound bad and it is still good to play; the troubles came when amplification needed... So I decided to search something to replace the low cost (and old) original pickup system with a new one trying to enhance the quality of the sound for the recording. I've choose L.R. Baggs Stagepro Elements after comparing different marks and models too considering sound, tech features, quality and price too. I found it solid, made with good materials; to me it looks as a quality product. If you are able and are used to make maintenance and small works on instruments, L.R. Baggs Stagepro Element is quite easy to install (it comes with clear istruction too). I also replaced the bridge saddle with a new one in...

You have to know the difference in terms of sound difference between piezo pickup vs mic pickup. If you like very present tone, hearing every single tone and string - this is the way to go. You can get great sound even form not so good naturaly sounding guitar as oposed to mic pickup, where you get an original, natural sound of your own guitar. I installed this pick-up in a 50eur guitar and everyone was asking me what kind of guitar is this with such a great sound - I explained, it is the pick-up that made this sound not the guitar itself. Not to forget, this pickup is very feedback resistant, which is very handy if you play loud stages with stage monitors - I never had any problems on that side.

Fishman Matrix Infinity VT Wide

I have a Taylor 314 from 20 years ago, a wonderful guitar. I ordered and with only an amateur's knowledge of these things, installed the Fishman Infinity VT in less than an hour (instructions for self-installation are not included, but are on the Fishman website). I also have a very good boutique 80 watt acoustic amplifier which I usually use for jazz and the first strum downstroke with the Taylor connected was magical (all settings to middle). Such a zing. The tone setting (from flat to scoop) is more than cosmetic and the switch which sets bass response too. Obviously I have not tried all the competing products, but they will have to be very good to beat this one. The Fishman reputation says it all. I have no regrets at all with my choice. I do suggest that before you buy, you read the...

Shadow SH 4020-C Preamp w/Nanoflex

In search of different sounds, I wanted to install a pickup on my 30 yr old classical guitar. This one seemed to be the most interesting one (and worth taking the risk of ruining the guitar). To cut the story short, I am happy with the result. I recommend it to anyone who has basic luthier skills or who has a luthier buddy. I had to get rid of some buzzing (caused by cables), and I replaced the supplied bridge with a bone bridge which I cut halfway in between string positions.. Right now I am trying to find a good use for the stereo sound...

Shadow SH Performer Tuner

Shadow SH Performer Tuner

Based on 1 reviews

Like many quality electro acoustic guitars built around 10-15 years ago my customer had a really high spec'd guitar (all solid woods) but the preamp and pickup fitted didn't have a built in tuner and the preamp had suffered from lots of 'good' use. It was a Shadow SH 863, with the big chunky metal strip under saddle piezo pickup. The challenge was to upgrade without having to re-cut any holes for the preamp or battery box. After research I found the Shadow SH-Performer-T(uner) was a straight swap. The new preamp covered the 4 holes from the SH863 (just) and I had to drill 4 new holes for the fixing screws. The Nanoflex piezo pickup that comes with the SH Performer as standard is much thinner and has better sensitivity. I had to make some shims to put under the saddle to make the...

Shadow SH NFX EP-C

Shadow SH NFX EP-C

I Successfully fitted a Shadow NFX EP-C preamp and pick-up to my practice Classical guitar. As an improving guitar student I wanted to review and critique my practice sessions objectively. I liked the un-intrusive location of the pre-amp; where a strap button might normally fit. I was impressed by the quality of the sound from the pick-up which performed well after I set up the guitar to compensate for the additional 1mm height at the saddle. Shadow rightly recommend a professional installation is best. I do have good DIY skills so I did install it myself and found the instruction sheet very clear and accurate. I have noted that my guitar now has improved tone. I add EQ control using a Fishman platinum stage DI into an analogue mixer where I record the output. I also successfully used a...

Shadow SH NFX EP-A

I like this pickup. It has a dual layer which senses some of the vibration of the top of the guitar. This is fitted to a cheap Gibson DSM and this has become my regular stage guitar, mainly due to the addition of this pick up. It is very clear and I can play on some very large stages with it. It does suffer from some rather bassy feedback, but this is mainly the fault of sound engineers not paying attention. I do have an older EMG undersaddle fitted to a much more expensive Lowden Acoustic, but this pick is much much better because the the EMG is brittle and this is smooth. This coupled with the Nano Mag would be a brilliant set up.

Fishman Power Tap Earth

Fishman Power Tap Earth

Based on 2 reviews

I bought this after trying a combination of soundboard transducer and fishman rare earth humbucker. it was a great combination that gave me the kind of sound that I wanted, but it also gave me huge amounts of feedback. The Power Tap promised the same level of soundboard sensitivity but in a system designed for the purpose. it works really well - but I've lost some of the detailed top-end that I was getting from the transducer pickup. Taps sound great. All in all, I think this is a fantastic pickup for anybody who hits their guitar, but it might be lacking in a tiny bit of nuance for anybody who doesn't need tap noises. For the ultimate, Fishman should wire in a mic with a 3-way blend - or maybe humbucker on one channel with a blend of tap/mic on the other channel.

L.R.Baggs Stagepro Anthem

L.R.Baggs Stagepro Anthem

I use stagepro anthem with acoustic Furch guitar and I must say the sound is nice. If I compare to it Yamaha's original miced pickups I might prefer Yamaha a bit, but in general they both sound good. Be carefull wich strings you put on, because the sound might be quite bright and crisp. The one thing I miss is the tuner speed. It takes some time for the tuner to start working and takes few seconds more for each strings. If you're on the stage and in a hurry, you might sonsider other options. In general I'm very satisfied with the product, I use it now for at least a year with no problems.
