Evans 12" Genera Dry Coated Snare

I use a 12" Gretsch snare as an auxiliary but I didn't like the stock head. I just wasn't happy with the sound I got no matter how it was tuned. I don't like too much overtone so after reading the positive reviews I opted for the Genera head. This head removes the need for damping with a sharp attack with no overtone. I just loved the difference it makes. I also put a Genera on my 13" Mapex steel snare. Love the sound and highly recommended.

Remo 12" Emperor X Coated Dot

This head is really well made and will last a long while. However, from my experience, it is not for every tuning. I like to tune my snares high and I don't really recommend this head for that, unless the plan is to play rimshots all the time. Because it is a double-ply, it becomes very stiff when tuned high. This will feel like hitting on a piece of solid wood and make the sound a bit underwhelming. Not round or full but rather overly dry. Only recommended for beefy, low to medium tunes.

Remo 12" CS Coated Black Dot Snare

I typically use Remo Ambassador for snare drum, however, for 12" inch snare, I tried this one. As I tune 12" snare quite high, the black dot in the middle helps to focus the sound and removes unwanted overtones. Just to complete the picture, I have used this head in combination with S-hoop drum hoop.

Remo 12" Skyntone

Am using this product with sonor signature heavy bubinga rig and am finding with the 12 tom that its very good for dub/d&b/jungle as it has quite a fast decay. To add additional dampening am using the muffler that came with the hld81 snare. This head is a good piece of kit :D

i hadn't tried a single ply on the snare for a few years so tried this out. it was a bit tricky to tune. its very resonant but also fairly low volume. im not a heavy hitter but i seem to get more out of 2-ply heads. it does sound good though, im playing mostly pop funk and rock.
