Some headphones may be great for a fling, but this is the pair that you marry

I'm a longtime DT-770 user, but I was looking for something a bit more trustworthy for mixing purposes. The DT-880 Pro's are more evenly balanced and have a slightly more polished overall sound than the DT-770's. With the use of Sound ID Reference software that is calibrated for the DT-880 Pro, the frequency response is about as close to flat as it gets, and I feel like I finally have an honest, trustworthy pair of mixing headphones.

There are newer iterations of Beyerdynamic headphones that supposedly have new and improved drivers. My experience with two of these (the DT-1770's and the 700 Pro X's) is that they do sound wonderful and more Hi-Fi than the DT-880 Pro's, but the balance of the frequency response, as well as the comfort, were not up to par with the DT-880 Pro. I found the bass emphasis on the DT-1770's much too strong for practical use in mixing, while the midrange of the 700 Pro X's was much too present and caused the soundstage to feel very congested. You may feel differently. Try them for yourself. But that was my experience, and I did not find either of these "updated" headphones at all useful for mixing.

There are a plethora of wonderfully thorough headphone reviews on the Sonarworks website (that's the company that makes Sound ID Reference) and you'll find that the DT-880 Pro is among the top-ranked of all headphones at all price points. And considering the price, it's an absolute no-brainer. Pick up a pair of DT-880 Pro's and be done with your search.

Good stuff to use in home studio in context of high gain guitar tracking, mixing. I use this one with RME FireFace UC interface. Clean, real sounding headphones. If you are angry metalhead and you want to safe your family it is equipment to save your relatives. Good balance between all frequencies, very comfortable on head. For me it was a alternative for AKG 712 Pro (I couldn't afford on opened system).strongly recommended

Incredible for mixing

I have been using them for a year now. I also have a pair of Ath M40x. This pair is WAY more balanced. The m40x is closed and i use it for recording mostly, or listening to more popular music (while on train or bus) because it has more bass and hf. The DT-880 pro has incredibly neutral sound and boring (in a good way), perfect for mixing. Due to the fairly larger soundstage the sound doesnt become annoying at any point and it's fairly easier to close your eyes and imagine where the instruments are located in the mix (do that)

It also feels really sturdy and it is supposed to have all replaceable parts but nothing has broken so far. I have only taken them out of my room a couple times to listen to music at work though and i am pretty careful.

The only reason i put 4 stars in comfort is because even though the sound doesn't tire me at all, one of my ears touches the inside of the earcup and after an hour or two it kinda hurts and i have to take a break. BUT I HAVE GIGANTIC EARS. So unless you share my curse, you won't have any problems.

Also if you don't want a set Just for mixing, check out the dt990 which is supposed to be a kinda more "fun", v-shaped version of this one and it is way cheaper (and also prettier if you ask me)

I wouldn't change a thing about these.

I use these mainly for production, switching with DT-770, depending on whether I want make noise around me.

They're super comfy.

I'm wearing them for hours without barely noticing.

Sound is well balanced.

Loving the "telephone" cable.

Every time someone asks for a headphone recommendation I point them to the DT series by Beyerdynamics.

I can't think of any cons.

I guess I've become a kind of beyerdynamic fanboy.

Reasons to buy

  • Exceptional sound quality with a balanced and even response, making them ideal for critical listening and mixing.
  • Sturdy and durable construction with high-quality cables and connectors, ensuring long-lasting performance.
  • Comfortable fit even during extended use, thanks to soft-cloth ear pads and lightweight design.
  • Highly linear frequency response allows for precise monitoring and audio adjustments.

Reasons to avoid

  • Semi-open design lacks noise isolation, making them less suitable for tracking or in noisy environments.
  • May require a dedicated headphone amplifier to achieve high volume levels, particularly the 250 Ohm version.
  • Some users found the fit a bit tight after extended wear, which could be uncomfortable for larger head sizes.
  • The headphones do not fold or have a collapsible design, limiting their portability.
