beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro Reviews
Good studio headphones
Very comfortable very detailed uncoloured sound
Great studio headphones for that money.
I bough this headphones one month ago for home EDM production and mixing.
When you open the box of those headphones - you understand that it's something special. You can also find a pretty cool small bag for headphones which is very handy thing to transport them.
Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro has a cool design and high quality build. Very soft velour earpads sits comfortable on ears. I can sit in those headphones more than 4 hours and felt yourself comfortable.
Sound:
Important thing to understand that no exist ideal headphones and the best way to avoid mistakes when buying headphones or monitors - listen them somewhere.
The first thing which you notice it's a very good bass. For music listening it's a very good thing. For production it's not bad, but you need to get used to reach proper sound.
The second thing it's a lot of highs on 6-8 kHz and 13 kHz. For some it's a problem, the others like this feature. It's a like visit card of the entire line Beyerdynamic headphones. I'm Personally did a cut on those high frequencies to reach more flat sound. It's a normal situation to do a correction of sound.
Middle frequencies are pretty flat.
In conclusion I can say that Beyerdyamic DT 990 Pro headphones are
very good choice under $200 for production, reference and monitoring.
Amazing tone!
Nice tone it realy is but my slightly large head is not enjoying the adjustable lengths, a bit wierd - adjusting lenght increases headroom but does not remove presure from your ears. Thankfully I dont use them too often for longer periods of time, so whenever I use `em I realy enjoy the sound and not having a fear of braking them. Nice set! I have both open and closed, both worth!
Buy Quality
I've had these headphones for 10 years and apart from some of the paint being faded on the ear cups they are in excellent condition.
I did buy new ear pads for them 2 years ago but 8 years out of one set isn't bad and I only replaced them because the foam was compressed a bit.
I have quite large ears so the cups touch them and it starts to annoy after about 3 hours or so but apart from that they are light, accurate, reliable headphones.
I had to buy my old boss a pair cause he kept borrowing mine!
Super comfortable
If there was a 6th star for comfort I would have given it, the velour cups on these headphones are so nice. These are a very honest sounding pair of headphones and I would definitely recommend them to anyone. I regularly use them for mixing when I can't use monitors. The only con is that they come with a soft bag, not a case. So if you're looking to travel and need them secure that might be a concern for you.
Excellent
I have been using these headphones for over a year now and they are by far the best headphones I have ever used. The sound quality is fantastic, and the build quality is supreme, able to handle daily use and abuse easily. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
Beyer Dynamic DT990 Pro
I have been waiting to upgrade my headphones from close back to some open back headphones for a while. After much deliberation i finally decided on these. I have extensively used to classic DT100 for years and always thought they sounded ok. The big thing for me was both the sound quality and comfort level. Sound quality is really good much better than closed back headphones, a well balanced low end with nicely detailed highs. Overall the sound is well balanced.
Comfort levels are very good, first night i got them i listened to mixes for around 4 hours without ear fatigue or the headphones annoying me. Build quality is good and i got the bundled case with mine to help protect them for any knocks from being out and about.
Overall A great set of headphones
Extreme treble and (almost) no bass
The good: Great midrange, high resolution, good fit
The bad: Extreme, almost hurtful, treble, lack of bass and surprisingly low output
Conclusion: It almost feels like my set of headphones are defect, I will try to return them
Great set of headphones!
These are real top quality. The sound signature is absolutely as expected "Uncoloured". As with other reviews, these are definitely good for making mixes at home or in a studio. Thumbs up!
Excellent Headphones!
I have tried several headphones throughout the years of my life and these has to be the best I have ever owned.
They are very comfortable even after several hours.
They are light on the head but tight so you can actually move your head without to fear that they will fall off.
Be aware that you will need an audiocard that can support up to 250 Ohm to make them perform at it's best, but they work very well with anything less as well.
The only negative part I've found so far is that the clamping effect on the head might be a little too tight from time to time so it might get a little uncomfortable, but just a tiny little so not really anything to worry about (this is of course after several hours of use).
These headphones work perfect for all I do, that includes listening to music, videos, films, studio work, gaming, everything basically! I haven't found a single time where they didn't perform well enough for what I wanted them to do.
They feel very very solid as well.
Therefore I have decided to give it an overall 5 stars, but -1 star on comfort because of the small discomfort because of the clamping effect, but that's not really something I haven't experienced on other headphones.
Extremely Comfortable Headphones
You could wear these headphones for weeks, and you won't feel any discomfort. Sound quality is great, reproduces the sub bass frequencies very well, and also has balanced mids.
Having owned these headphones for almost 3 years, they wore out after heavy use after 2 years, with the left ear phone rattling on sub bass frequencies below 60Hz. Unfortunately this seems to be a general issue on many forums!
Other than that great pair of headphones!
5 stars for comfort
5 stars for sound
3 stars for durability
Value priced professional headphone
I bought this mainly for an extra reference of my mix. I have been researching and realised this is one of the headphone that is popular in the industry, with such price tag, I am happy to buy it and have a try.
Building quality:
Excellent built with metal components used for the size adjustment. This is important as I had a Shure SRH 1840, the plastic part means it breaks easily and i had that to be repaired in 6 months. But this one definitely would bot cause such issue.
Wearing comfortability
Very comfortable with soft ear pad, a lot better than AKG in this aspect, slightly tight at the beginning, but loosen after couple of weeks. No issue even after a long period of wearing.
Sound and response
I found this sound similar with the DT770 pro, except more soundstage and depth, very subtle, not as warm as 770 pro. I found 990 less coloured. Though it is a open designed, certainly the sound leakage is minimised. Compare to 880 pro, i would say 880 pro is more neutral sound. So 990 is some where in between.
Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro
Nice and wide sounding studio headphones with a reasonable price. Really clear and specific sound. Compared to the closed DT-770 headphones, these lack some of that bass boom (this is a good thing), but boost a little more the higher frequencies (which is something you just have to get used to). The mid frequencies are really sharp and accurate, without being to irritating to your ears. These also feel really comfortable on the ears, no pressure, no pain, no ache. I can sit with these phones on for hours without any problems. Previously I've tried some AKGs (K240, K271), and those began to feel really inconvenient on my ears after an hour or two. Really great or maybe the best choice in this price category for open studio headphones.
DT-990
I bought the 250 ohm version of these headphones and they work out of my laptop's headphone port.
These headphones are light as a feather and are incredibly comfortable. They are able. The frequency response is very even except towards the higher limits of human hearing.
remember that these headphones are meant to be light-weight for a reason. THey are intended for studio use and are meant to be taken care of.
Therefor, I will warn you that these headphones are not durable and are not meant to be abused beyond their intended use. If you are looking for more durable headphones that can take more abuse, with a decent response, you may want to check out the ATH-M50's. However, those are significantly heavier.
As far as frequency response goes and pleasurable listening. These headphones are well priced. There are better headphones even by this same company. However, it seems that at this price, these have better performance per unit currency.
Bottom line is, you are not going to find a perfect headphone for every application. So, make a choice. If you are looking for headphones for monitoring, mixing, general indoor listening, studio use then I highly suggest these.
Good headphones but..
These were my very first headphones for studio work. Albeit my studio is just a home studio, I still required something to mix in since my room was untreated. At first, I had trouble with the bass frequencies because these headphones handled them very well. And by that I mean there was simply too little lows in them, which made me crank out some more lows in the mix. But it didn't translate well on other sound systems, and I could tell I had mixed with too much bass. However, once I got used to this, I was able to compensate for it and my mixes turned a LOT better.
I actually managed to mix a whole metal album with these cans, and once I learned how they work, I mixed quite well. All the people I know who heard the album said it sounded great. It's thanks to these cans.
Slightly unbalanced
Overall the sound of these headphones is pretty good and nicely detailed. The openness is very pleasant and the built quality is fine. However, I find the low end overblown, meaning that it sounds as if someone has upped the level of the subwoofer. So I give this headphone to people who need to be impressed with fat lows. For my own mixing and mastering needs I have acquired a Sennheiser HD800 instead. This is in a totally different price class of course, but it is also in a totally different sound quality class. Especially when used with a good headphone amplifier, like Violectric HPA V200 or SPL Phonitor.
