Features limited, but Boss quality

Quality is top notch as most Boss items. Features are limited specially with only 2 pedals and no editing-app. Sound wise is very good and will get you through gigs without any problem, but if you compare to VE 500 then it really dwarfs in flexibility (more fx, editing app, midi) and in sound (algorithms were improved). I upgraded to it, but kept the VE 20 as a backup

Ideal for vocalists...

Its boss so its built like a tank very robust, Ideal for the vocalist who does not want the sound man to have all the control from the front. The only downside is you have to use the sound knob on the top of the unit to cycle through the effects to the ones you want to use which is fine if you are a dedicated vocalist but a little harder if your playing guitar or keyboards... although you can also do this by using the foot switch on the right.. but all in all a great quality pedal with some great presets and plenty of space to create your own custom sounds,..

Boss VE-20 Vocal Performer

This has been a super reliable quality product. Incredible range of features and I've used it on stage and in studio and never had a problem with it.The reverb in it is the best most natural and controllable reverb I have used.. Overall would definitely recommend this unit....

Good to cut feedback

• Good to add effects on vocals during rehearsals.

• With the EQ, you can cut one frequency at a time to see which one is creating a feedback and cut it to stop it!

• For gigs, it's good if you have specific settings that change from song to song or during songs themselves.

• If you just like one specific setup (a bit of delay, for example), it might be easier to ask that setup to the sound engineer.

Always good as a backup anyway!

A great tool!

Lots of possibilities. Advice if you are looking for harmonization: create your own patches, where you disable all other preprocessings (reverb, chorus, ...) and keep only harmonization.

Sole drawback: the pedal would benefit from a dry output and a wet output, allowing sound engineers to mix themselves between both sounds during a live perf.

Best investment i've made

really helps me with live shows when the sound manager there forgets to put the delay on the right times and when i have the boss pedal which im borrowing at the moment

Your bread and butter but not a pedal you'll use forever

This is a really good pedal. There are a lot of useful features and a lot of needless and unnecessary features that you'll never use.

The ability to make your own settings, save them, and change between different levels of reverb, compression, delay and other effects is great. I use it so I don't have to communicate to sound engineers about my desired vocal effects. It can cause a bit of feedback if reverb/delay are up too high but this can be fixed with a little tweak of the EQ.

Phantom power is also very handy if you have a mic that needs it, otherwise you can just use any passive mic.

It's built like a tank and the reverb and delay sound good for the price.

In summary,

I would recommend this pedal to a friend, 100%. I don't think it's the be all and end all but it's a great way to have more control over your vocals at a live performance.

Best out there .

The amount you can do on this is unbelievable you will not be disappointed . For vocals the skies the limit with this pedal and the loop feature is brilliant and everything is user friendly .

a jack of all trades

I use this pedal for it's basic effects, things like echo and reverb, and i'm very satisfied with its performance. I've seen people doing crazy thing with it but I havent explored its full potential yet. I reccoment it to anyone who wants to treat vox as something more than singing the lyrics. As an istrument maybe.

Very clever box of tricks!

The VE-20 packs in so many features, it's difficult to know where to start.

If you just search online for some videos of this, you'll be sold on it!

We bought this for our lead vocalist to add some chorus effects and harmonies to some of the songs.

But it also has some cool features like tone correction / auto-tune. So you can get that weird digital sounding voice used by Black Eye Peas etc.

Plus it can subtly correct the odd note that's sung off key! ;-)

It's a bit complicated to start with, but the manual's pretty good (if your tech minded).

The build quality solid. And I like that it accepts either XLR or Jack into the same sockets.

Only thing that bugs me sometimes is that it can change the vocal level and mess up my mix!

Boss VE-20

Excellent personal vocal effects unit. We have used it live, in rehearsal and for recording and it has done exactly what it says on the tin. Bought it to replace a TC Electronics unit that we were not happy with. Very glad we made the change. Highly recommend this unit - build like a tank but, if we did break it, we would go straight out and buy another one.

Welcome addition

I purchased this item with a view to making our repertoire more interesting and less 'middle road'. We were not to be disappointed and my singing partner loves adding the harmonies, particularly in the 'middle eights'. It's given our program a whole new dimension at the press of a button.

Easy and fun

This pedal is supremely easy to use. I did not read a word from the manual and still was able to conjure any sound that I wanted. The store function was simple and having the option of naming your own creations is quite usefull. You've got delay, distortion, reverb (and the ability to put reverb on top of every other effect) flanger, chorus. You can kick on harmonies with the right switch, these need a more caring hand to get right than the other effects. The pedal doesn't compromise the natural sound of the microphone and the versatility of it makes it a great buy for any singer who wants to have controll over your own sound.

Sound busting

I bought this Boss vocal performer because I play in a 3 piece band am the drummer and also the lead singer the other two don't help with backing vocals at all so when hitting certain chorus's I needed something to give me a bit of oomph and this delivers in spades, with delay, reverb, chorus, flanger ( I can even sound like Beck in I'm a Loser baby ) it's not just that though there's harmonies, 3 voices, 5 voices, even 6 voices, you sound as if you have a whole pack of backing singers behind you, it's beyond excellent plus you can loop the pedal to programme it so you can have numerous sounds going at once, and last but by no means least it's so easy to program in pre programmed sounds and settings that you just recall back through the pedal, I don't know how I survived without this

A MUST buy EXCELLENT

Very good Harmoniser

When I first bought this I was interested in the harmoniser. As a Sax/Flute player I had lots of ideas in my head which I thought could be realised by the Boss VE-20. Ok it's for singers but woodwind players use mikes as well and the basic idea is the same. The octave generates a pretty good Bari sax and the diatonic thirds, fifths etc work well. Most of the presets are useful and the looper is good quality. This is one of the few devices on the market that work without having to plug in a guitar or keyboard to enable the harmonies and the fx are good. Boss are excellent at making good solid equipment that works well. If it has a downside it is the wealth of choice. I think most people would be happy with less presets and simpler programming.
