Daddario EXL148 Reviews
Thick strings for low tunings!
Guitarplayers always tend to try something new. In my case, I discovered the world of lower tunings. I tuned my Ibanez RG1570 to drop B and of course, new strings and a setup were needed, to make it playable
As a long time D'Addario player these were my choice of strings for this tuning. This set is recommended for drop C tuning, but I found it more enjoyable one halfstep lower. It just sounds and feels right!
Especially the lower strings provide a lot of punch and definition, which is needed, when you tune your sixstring that low.
On the other side, the higher strings still feel very balanced, so soloing is no problem!
I recommend this set to every player, who plays in drop B or C.
Heavy strings!
These strings are good and bright without sounding girly; I use these for C-standard or Drop B / Bb tuning. As always, D'addario are good and reliable, take a good battering and last well against corrosion.
Using these for drop B.
I've tried alot of different strings from different manufactureres and D'addario are the absolute best.
No other kind of strings beat the feel, durability and sound of them.
For drop tunings
As we all know everyone has their taste in two things: picks & strings.
These have a very nice and bright tone, as expected. I would say that this is a perfect set for low tunings like C or even B.
I mostly play in C, so I was looking for cheap and robust string-set to satisfy my needs, and for the price - they did.
The only disadvantage if you use extra-heavy gauge - check your saddle width if you're using tune-o-matic bridge. There might be a chance that you'll need to make them wider.
Overall score: 7/10, recommended.
thick strings for thick sound!
Since I tuned one of my guitars to dropped B I was in need of a set of string which fit this tuning. D'Addario recommend this set for dropped C tuning, but i found them too thick for this. But this is personal taste.
Brutal riffing is a pleasure and the sound is super fat while still being comfortable.
The durability is okay. If you clean them after playing, they last longer. Intonation was no problem and my vibrato never goes out of tune, since i use the strings. Even crazy divebombaction is no problem. Pretty cool! Until now, I don't have the problem with breaking strings! Another guitarist from my are is lamenting about this set and the strings breaking all the time, but MAYBE it comes from playing an old Ibanez GIO guitar without proper setup made.
So finally, if you need thick strings for lower tunings, give these a try! You won't regret it!
Great for Drop C
Most string sets aren't well balanced, this is known by a lot of people especially those of us who play in non standard and drop tunings.
However this pack is pretty much spot on for Drop C. Granted that it would likely appeal more to those who prefer quite a lot of tension in their strings, especially on the low C. It has a slight disadvantage of making bends on the higher register a bit tougher to pull off. For a Metal rhythm player like myself, this isn't an issue, and solos are definitely manageable.
If you like a lot of tension for tight, fast riffing, these will do you well. If you are a lead player spending most of your time on the higher end of things, you might want to consider mixing in some lighter top strings or get used to the tension, which isn't so bad as you're likely dropped at least a step down.
These even hold up well for drop B tuning. Great strings, usual D'Addario quality.
Probably my go-to gauge on a 25.5" guitar for Drop B. Great quality strings and packing, and with the coloured ball ends, it's that little bit harder to get your strings muddled!
A pack of strings from the best!
I've used d'addario string for years now. I've had flings with other brands, but I allways seem to come back to the sound and feel of this brand.
After tuning my Gibson Explorer to D-standard and later to C#-standard, I had to try a different gauge.
I like my strings quite thick, so I found this set (and the EXL145 for my Edwards Les Paul that have a higher tension for some reason) and I could not be happier!
I do wish that the g-string was wound, but that is more of a misjudgement from my side than from D'addario.
However I think my next set will again be these strings, since even the competators can't give me something that sounds this good and sounds so fresh for so long.
Great strings!!
I love these strings! Really, really like the 12-60 gauge as it is perfect for me when I play in anything lower than D standard.
Quality is as always with D'Addario, great.
Extra Heavy
Finally a standard set that has a heavy enough low string to handle being dropped to C without going floppy like most typical 'heavy bottom' sets.
Nice bright tone as standard from D'addario, seem like they'll take a good bit of abuse and retain tuning stability.
Affordable too, saves me from buying normal sets and getting an extra heavy single.
