Doepfer A-124 Wasp Filter Reviews
Awesome filter for the dirty stuff
This is a great (dirty) filter that can also add some crunch. Great value too!
Fantastic little filter
A module that is recommended a lot. For good reaons, it sound really unique. Back off on the input level and its wonderfully smooth sounding.
Vintage sound
The sound of the Wasp filter is peculiar and reminiscent of the old days filters. Doepfer says it is based on the EDP Wasp circuits of the 70s. It sounds "dirty" and over-driven when the level is pushed up while it does not get into resonance. I find the LP/HP mix smooth and precise, other than useful for this little inexpensive unit!
Dirty
Dirty Filter! Best one out there for this price
Good and cheap filter.
Good and cheap filter. Perfect for the angry bass. :)

Amazing filter iv fallen in love it with so much i bought two, great sound base lines will sing and scream. Plus it comes in slick black and yellow version. Whats not to love as this price. great filter. would recommend in giving it a listen
Must have
Fantastically rough sounding filter. Youtube reviews don't do it justice. It really adds an organic liveliness to any sound you send through it.
Build quality is Doepfer: solid.
I don't like filters - I do like THIS filter.
My 1st module ever (along with an LFO, VCO and VCA) - so cheap it really is the definition of a no-brainer!
Not a fan of filters in general so I (stupidly) sold it - when Doepfer announced the SE ones I missed it so much I bought two!
The Wasp filter has its own personality, one I quite like. It is not a smooth creamy Moog style filter. This guy can punch you in the face, puke in your pocket, run off with your girlfriend but STILL come back at the end of the night and share his burger with you as he calls you a taxi to make sure you get home safely!
Your either going to love it or hate it - who am I kidding your going to love it! Nasty, spitty, buzzy little Sméagol!
Don't overlook the BP out - I initially thought of it as a LP filter and missed much of its rough-edge charm!
Pros - stupidly cheap! Noisy, cranky, angry... unique in a brilliant way!
Cons - (this hasn't happened to me but it is a known thing) Because of the way the filter is designed it puts a lot of strain on the 14-pin 4069 IC - these can and will blow. They wont do any damage, are socketted and really cheap to replace. Just buy a bunch at Mouser/Farnell and your good to go! Think of them as consumable like guitar strings and everything is fine!
I don't know how to recommend the Wasp filter higher than saying after selling mine I missed it so much I bought two more - they are so cheap you need two!
Unique sound. Excellent value.
Bought this filter on a whim really, had heard from various sources that this was a filter with plenty of unique character. These sources were definitely right! The filter can be as polite or aggressive as you need it to be. Low resonance settings give you more subtle results but where this filter really shines is on high resonance settings where you can get a multitude of unpredictable driven tones. As has been previously mentioned this filter will not self oscillate due to built in limiting so if you need this feature you will need to look elsewhere. I would highly recommend this filter as a compliment to another more neutral & cleaner filter.
Unique sounds
A great filter that offers very unique sounds. While it's unable to self oscillate it's still a very worth while addition purely for the results you get when dialing in high res values. The build quality is good and while some Doepfer modules seem overly large, the module is a respectable size. The offering of lowpass, highpass, notch and band pass only add to it's usefulness.
Wasp filter
Stunning filter and not just because of the low price!
A Crazy Beast that can be a Filter.
The wasp filter is an oddball, drive it to hard and the signal bleeds through, turn the resonance up too high and it wobbles and warbles all over the place but this is exactly what it is good for, adding some random oddness and colour.
Trimming the input signal and the resonance level makes it behave more predictably and makes it more of a sound sculptor (traditional filter) but it still has an almost melting metal like quality to its sound, quite "acid" I guess. When using it with the more subtle settings or with the high/low mixed, a little extra gain on the output helps it sit right against other modular signals.
If you feed the bandpass output back to the input you can get the resonance to really scream and self resonate.
The dials are all really solid, feeling and the construction feels built to last.
Anyway, I love it.
:)
A superb filter at a great price
What an amazing little filter, packed with all the basic features you'll need. However, the real beauty is heard when you play with the Res - it transforming into a beast when set to full! CV1 & CV2 works really well (as you'd expect with Doepfer).
The real power of this filter is it's Res, especially when it's fully engaged and you start to experience some very rather odd but wonderful effects. I've used many filters before but now like this which makes it's something quite unique in the world of voltage controlled filters (it would be nice to see a CV on the Res but that doesn't effect the over all user experience).
Both CVs inputs are responsive and the ability to adjust CV2 is just priceless - for the price this is a real bargain. I can't wait to buy some more Doepfer filters based on the quality of this unit.
Highly recommended
Great nasty filter!
This filter is brilliant. Based on the filter of the EDP Wasp, it has a nasty, gnarly sound that cuts through anything but can also be used as a reasonably mellow filter providing you don't go crazy with the settings. It loves being fed back on itself, I've had some excellent results multing the output into a mixer and mixing it back (along with the original source) into the input. Turn up the resonance and it really squeals like a beast! I think its a great compliment to any standard low pass filter in any Eurorack system. It absolutely loves frequency modulation. I've had a great time putting drums through it and modulating with an oscillator :) Absolutely astounding value. I have two.
Mad as a box of frogs
Another great filter from Doepfer. When this thing gets close to self-oscillation it starts to assault your ears. It is quite nasal, if you know what I mean, not plumby and round like the A108. Its output is lower than most other Doepfer filters so you will need to turn it up a bit in your VCA.
Wasp filter
Doepfer make a great range of filters at frankly unbelievable prices, if you into eurorack you would be crazy to over look some of these...
the wasp in particular has a very definitive sound, F**K the band pass sounds great, the mix knob for HP/LP is extremely useful...
top filter...
