Electro Harmonix Small Clone Reviews
Classic chorus
Nice sound, essential for those Nirvana moments, but great for general addition of chorus to subtle clean guitar tone. It's also brings out a nice little extra to an overdriven lead tone.
Feature-wise there's not a lot in this box; only chorus rate on the pot and deep or shallow chorus effect on the switch. For me, the shallow chorus effect works best in most situations. The deepness of the chorus effect seems to be affected by the rate too, getting deeper as the rate is turned up. This means you can get a quite extreme effect with the depth set high and the rate turned up. As always, it pays back to experiment with the settings before you gig with it, especially given the interactivity between the depth switch and the rate knob.
All in all, a great sounding chorus at a very reasonable price, but adjustment options are limited.
Frustrating power options
There is 0 need to maintain the ridiculous power options, maintaining "originality" is pointless when it only makes things awkward and has no benefits, this pedal requires a mini jack style of powering.
There are some nice sounds in there, although mainly at various sweetspots, the pedal is basic but also very cheap.
I've found the switch to be extremely noisy, the pedal itself is quite hissy as well, even when powered isolated.
Small Clone Pedal
This pedal has a classic sound to it, something people recognise. It sounds great and is probably the only way to really get "that sound".
In use it is larger than most pedals and has a mini jack input for the power supply. Sometimes the effect is too much and it needs to be mixed in with a blender pedal.
Not the most versatile of pedals, with no effect level or depth controls, just a modulation speed knob and a switch that takes it from soft to hard chorus.....
However, in use it is great. Easy to use and delivers a classic sound without any fuss or tinkering. It feels responsive to your playing as well.
If you like the particular sound of this pedal then it is worth getting but if you want a chorus pedal you can tweak then you really need something else.
Nirvana sound
Nice warm tone, very organic. This is clasic chorus popularized by Kurt Cobain. 2 options. Standard chorus and psychedelic rotery - leslie effect. Very basic. Build quality is good. I think pedal could be a bit smaller.
Your nirvana?
Everybody knows Kurt Cobain and his tone in the Nirvana song Come As You Are. When they recorded it, Kurt was using this tiny blue box, the Electro Harmonix Small Clone chorus.
You can easily handle the tone with only one knob for rate (= speed) and a two way switch for depth, with makes the sound a little bit darker.
It's almost unbelievable but with these two controls you can create a huge number of different sounds. From a light chorus to crazy sounds.
It also features a true bypass curcuit and so it doesn't suck on your tone, what's really important to me. Because of the analog curcuit it sounds warm and naturally.
EHX Small Clone
It has a very good sound, it has a a rate control which allows you
to control the intensity of the effect. It has a depth switch that
gives other life to your sound, it's like heart shaped box solo type sound.
If you are a Nirvana Fan and you are looking for to buy a Chorus, this is the pedal!
It is made in USA with a very good quality, this pedal is like a tank, super tough.
This is a damn good pedal. It's perfect if you're an intermediate guitarist, for the price,
the sound, and the wide array of things you can do with it, you can't go wrong.
Review - EH Small Clone
To be honest, I love the thick/fat wobbly type chorus that the Small Clone gives, but I am not a fan of dodgy bypass settings. I have messed around with my board as much as I can and switching this pedal on or off in the middle of performance. From what I have read, that can vary from batch to batch, some people seem happy with theirs, I am unfortunately in the group that is dissatisfied with the bypass. Shame.
Small clone
Great product, huge amounts of chorus.
Classic sound.
