Remo 14" Emperor Coated
Based on 19 reviews
The Remo Emperor coated snare head has to be one of the most versatile drum heads on the market. It can handle all kinds of tunings and the double ply construction removes just enough overtone while still allowing some natural 'ring' and makes the head really durable. I have been gigged the same drum head for about a year in the past, and it still sounded great. I'd recommend this drum head for anyone looking for a durable, workhorse drum head, especially new drummers who are looking to change a stock snare drum head to get a better sound. Go for it.
Remo 14" Pinstripe clear
Based on 16 reviews
Firstly, you can't go wrong with Remo. I purchased this for my 14" floor tom as I love the 'wet' or 80's sound off them. The double-ply clear Pinstripe's, though, also last forever. While other heads might make your toms 'sing' life in them doesn't last long and then you need to change them far more often. the Pinstripes however will last for a long time and still hold their sound. Also very easy to tune. If you are a drummer who gigs very regularly but don't have lots of disposable income, the Pinstripes may be for you. They'll sound good for weeks on end and with the right tuning you may not need to replace them as often as you think.
Evans 14" Calftone Tom
Based on 6 reviews
I have a set of the Evans Calftone drumheads, and I can honestly say these are among the best heads I have ever played! They definitely don't feel hugely durable, like the Hydraulic range, but they are by no means "weaker" than the G1 heads. They offer a delightfully warm tone that sounds great with or without dampening. I used the Evans e-rings to test that (I don't own any moongel or anything of the sort). If you aren't too much of a heavy hitter and are looking for a classic sound then these are for you!
Evans 14" EC2S/SST Clear
Based on 5 reviews
Evans drum skins are top quality. The sound is perfect, they are durable and last long. I would highly recommend Evans over and above any other skin brand. I recently switched to Hydraulic batters for all my toms; the EC2s are a classic looking and sounding clear tom batter, but the hydraulics for me are a lot rounder and fuller sounding. They decay quicker than the EC2s clears, so for my taste hydraulics are perfect. But, if you prefer longer decay and a slightly more complex set of fine overtone options in tuning, then I couldn't recommend the EC2s skins more. Proper good old Evans. My favourites by far :-)
Remo 14" Vintage A Coated
Based on 4 reviews
If you are Remo die hard Ambassador/Emperor user and not tried this head - it's time to do it. Remo Vintage A is a two ply head, created to reassemble the first remo drum head made in 50's. Which does not mean that it sounds like that. Sound takes you closer to emperor, but with more mellow and warm attack. It sounds great on modern drums but if you have vintage 3-ply re-ring shells (Rogers, Ludwig, Slingerland, Camco) - it will give you a lot of pleasure! Generally the head starts to give the full response after week, two of playing. Sounds exceptionally good on vintage Ludwig Supraphonic snare.
Aquarian 14" Classic Clear
Based on 4 reviews
I bought the Aquarian 14" Classic Clear head 'cause I was positevely surprised with this company after switching my snare and bass drum heads from Remo to Aquarian. I use this head as resonant on my 14'' rack tom. The characteristics are the same with the other two big companies' similar heads (Evans G1 and Remo's Ambassador), single ply-clear, but the quality of construction is way better. Tuning was never easier. Without having to stretch the head on the drum, the bearing edges of the drum ''read'' the drum heads tension immediately! Highly recommended.
Evans 14" G1 Coated
Based on 4 reviews
I use a single ply coated head on most snare drum, I find it ideal for sound and feel. Two ply heads tend to feel heavy to the touch when playing whereas single ply really offers this comfortable response when playing loud or quiet. Another single ply headm the G1 Genera, is designed for snare but has a muffling ring underneath and I find that the G1, not featuring this ring, is easier to play. The possibility of getting all the overtones available is important to me, it's always possible to chuck a tone control afterward if needed. If you consistently hit as hard as you can, you may find that this drum head doesn't last as long as you'd wish which might be the only drawback for this item. This is the drum head for me - works perfect with a Ludwig Supraphonic 400 14'' x 5''.
Evans 14" Hydraulic Red Tom
Based on 3 reviews
Evans Hydraulics Red are the perfect Choice for me. I wanted good looking Heads with very few overtones and on top they are very steady once you tuned them to a certain tone, they stay in tune longer than any other brand I used before. I play mostly Metal and sometimes I hit them very hard and after Months of tormenting them they keep up their good Sound and looks. if you play similar Music I can recommend those to You. Also from the visual view they are a great addition - I choose Red and my Kit looks awesome to me
Evans 14" EC2S/SST Frosted Control
Based on 3 reviews
Bought these for my entire kit which is 8" 10" 14" 16" Looks amazing sounds incredible i love the frosted feel and look These products met every expectation I had for them. As drummers we all search for heads that gives us the tone we want, look cool!! and tunes easily, these are my fave heads for toms for sure!!. They sound great on stage and on recordings The tone is amazing right from the lowest tuning the the highest so they are very versatile. I use really low tuning on floor toms and quite high on rack toms, and for both they work amazing. I don't use moon gel or a dampener as the heads them self's just tune up perfectly for me and iv used them for many years now the tone is very pleasing to me and my fellow drummer friends and others when they use my kit would...
Evans 14" G12 White Coated
Based on 2 reviews
Rave reviews of these drumheads convinced me to try them out and i'm happy that i did. They are really easy to stick on your drums with minimal tuning and produce a warm, focused sound with a lot of projection. Being only single ply, but with the strength of a twin ply, these really bring out the tone and character of your drums and can be used for a number of styles of music. However, i thought they were going to have a white coating as in the listing but when they turned up they had a glassy, frosted appearance but still delivered the goods in playabillity and sound.
