I took it out of the box and started to play it without any need of adjusting the tuning. Amazing sensitivity and definition, warm and fat sound, a beautiful overtone. The range of sounds one can get from this snare is so vast that it can fit any music genre. I also have a Ludwig Black Magic, which is a great snare drum, but since I received the Sonor AS 12, two months ago, the Ludwig has been resting. The Dual Glide snare strainer has the smoothest operation I?ve ever seen. What else could you ask? That it also looks gorgeous? It does and no photographs can do justice to the beauty of the real thing.

Genres: I was searching ultimate snare suitable for different genres which I play like stoner, sludge, death and doom metal. Mostly for loud applications with rimmshots but still clear, sensivity and warm in any other kind of drumming. Low tension: Great with 2-ply heads, with which you can achive very fat "Memphis" sound. Warm, with some nice overtone but still clear and controlable with very huge rimmshot which will give a smile on your sound engineer face. Recommend it for stoner and rock application where you need cannon instead machine gun. Medium tension: Medium sustain, warm and quick full punch. Reference sound for slow patterns and blast beats. I had never seen one of these snare drums in the flesh but had read some reviews on them. As I was looking for a new kit and wanted the toms mounted on the bass drum I decided on the Tama SLP G Bubinga kit and so ordered the snare to match. I am blown away with the kit and the sound from the snare is about as good as I have ever heard. The drum was so easy to tune which must be down to the quality of the shell, I have been playing Tama drums for a number of years now and didn't think anything could top my old Starclassic Maple kit, wrong - this is even better, fantastic drum!!

I was intrigued by this snare and as it matches my Mapex Saturn V natural burl kit, so I decided to get it. This is not my first Black Panther, I have a few of them but I think that this one is a special one. The birch/walnut combination results in the nice attack of birch but still darker sounding than the typical all birch snare. It can handle most tunings very well and sounds deeper than the 5.5 inches it is. It kind of reminds me of the original Versatus snare. A great all-rounder snare in my opinion, and superbly finished, I am glad that Mapex uses birch wood more and more. I have made it my main snare for the time being. Well worth the Black Panther title, and for the price, it seems hard to beat!

Well, this instrument is a story on its own. It weighs about 11kg and the sound is super responsive. Positive side: The sound is very specific and definitely makes your records or live situations stand out from others. VERY responsive, it reacts to the stick almost immediately, it took me a couple of month to get used to it, but when you know how to handle this, then it is a great tool. LOUD, very loud. The more power you put into your stroke, the louder it gets. It doesn't choke the way some other metal snares could choke. I've always liked Yamaha's Absolute series drums. I unfortunately had to sell my Beech Custom Absolute snare about 4 years ago, and ever since I've wanted to buy another high-end snare drum. When Yamaha introduced the Absolute Hybrid series at NAMM 2014, I was very excited - I liked the Nouveau lugs and the new hook lugs seem a sensible step forward, and the price is very reasonable for a quality drum. I ordered the Polar White snare, which is a gorgeous slightly pearlescent off-white colour (much more subtle than the white pearl finish of the Custom Absolute). Was looking for a warm, woody sound snare. This snare is one of these. Very easy to tune. I think that walnut makes the difference, giving a darker, more dry tone. It's not an open sounding drum, so I would recommend a single ply head. It comes with Remo ambassador head. I put an Evans Genera dry single ply head and it works really fine. I don't use moongel etc... In the past I owned a Tama starphonic nickel over steel, a Tama slp g maple and a bubinga one.... It's closer to bubinga, drier than starphonic and more controlled than g maple. If someone owns or have heard one of these hope this can help. I love it and I'm really happy for choosing this one. Beautiful sound and looks! Came packaged really good. It has a "towel" case with it / not a real case for the road, just a really nice "towel" kind of wrapping/. It's one of the most beautiful snares I have ever seen, if visuals are something for you. Sound wise I play funk/rock/~jazzy/hip-hop mostly High-tuned snare and it sounds killer! It has that wood sound going on with it which I really love! / I'm a wood snares guy! / Build quality is top-notch! Awesome high-end snare for a really decent price!

The cut in the mix and the power you can get from this snare is really really impressive! You can feel the rimshots cutting through you as you hit the snare. I have this snare for over 6 months. Have done: -> 3 studio recordings -> 6 live events -> at least 50 rehersals Never got a negative comment about this snare from sound engineers or band members. Easy to tune and easy to maintain. I personally prefer 2 ply snare batter heads, but the single ply with a little bit of muffling was the way to go with this one. Mapex nailed this one, it is DEFINENTLY worth the price. If you are looking for pop, rock, punk or even metal snare drum, this will be perfect choice for you.

Pros: - With this dense Rosewood shell (with 30° bearing edges) and some new good quality wires installed (even thin wires would work well) plus the drum heads of your choice, you can in fact achieve very controlled sound and a really sensitive wires' response, e.g. for a studio recording session. - This snare can actually get really loud, so it's easy to play accented notes. At the same time the sound of the ghost notes is quite distinct, so the potential dynamic range is inspiringly wide. - The sustain of this 5.5 inch snare is long enough to my taste (not too long). You can get it shorter, though it also depends on the tuning of the heads and/or muffling.
