Jensen C8R 4 Ohms Reviews
Epiphone Valve Junior upgrade
I got this for my Epiphone Valve Junior combo and it has given it some more highs and clarity.
Clear and loud
This can revive any practice amp imho. It is a great little speaker. It seems better optimized and is much louder than the stock pickup in the VOX valvetronics 20+ at the same settings. At first it was a little bit muddy and stiff, but the more you use it, the better it sounds.
It does sound more american than british, however, that can be altered with a little bit of EQ if you are into more british type sound.
Very nice speaker for Bugera V5.
It gave my amp a more bright open sound with more clarity and the notes sound more "musical" and warmer. This speaker really excels at blues/jazz/funk style so if you are a fan of this genre go ahead and buy it , you won't regret it.
Detail and clarity
I use it in my Harley Beton GA5 combo amp.
Really brings out the detail and clarity.
The top end sounded a bit harsh at first, especially with some fuzz.
But after a few days got smoother. Love it!
Great speaker at low price.
I needed a 8 inch speaker for a small Champ inspired combo I'm building for home practise. I have had excellent results with these "reissue" Jensen speakers before. In fact I find the C8R to be one of the best of the current Jensen models. The smaller ceramics and the larger alnicos are the best ones in my opinion. In particular the P12N and this one. Great speakers! So it was an easy choice and it sounds exacty as nice as I remembered.
The clean sound is very "American", clear and bright. The highs are a bit sharp the first couple of hours but it mellows out after a while (considerably faster than on the big brother C12N). The lows are very decent for an 8 inch and not muddy at all, very tight sound.
The distorted sound is extremely bright and aggressive, like with most American voiced speakers. Too harsh for my taste. I wouldn't get this kind of speaker for distorted sounds unless I REALLY wanted the bright fuzz-like sound it produces. Some people might like it but for me it's American voiced speakers for clean(ish) only and British voices speakers for anything that requires distortion.
HIGHLY recommended for bright, Fender-style sounds! You won't find a better American voiced speaker at this price! I also find these inexpensive Jensen to be my number one choice at ANY price for vintage Supro amps. Really, REALLY nice match for those!
Sweet fundamental clang.
Residing currently in a spruce cabineted Selmer Little Giant MkI clone but I use it regularly for a Tweed Princeton 5F2a. Magnificent clarity with a sweet top end shimmery chime. Overdrive has a pleasant chewy midrange grunt but it's the top end zing that's the real character with this speaker - ace for freakbeatiness. And trebly fuzzboxes like a Maestro or a Fuzzrite. Bass is just about there but not what an 8" speaker is really about I don't think. These Jensens are very unfairly maligned imo, this is a very good speaker with a definitive nod to the higher frequencies.
ka-ching!
Bang for the buck
A good speaker for the money paid. Put this in my bugera v5 and the improvement was easy to hear.
Not for my Bugera V5 Infinium
I ordered this speaker only because so many here gave it positive review about how it fits so well with their Bugera V5 amplifier!
I guess we all hear tone differently because to me this speaker sounded lesser than the original stock Blue Turbosound speaker which is on the warm/loose side.
In my opinion Jensen C8R does have more highs but also more high Mids which to my ear didnt sound that great.
So I opted to keep my stock speaker and send this one back.
Its a well built speaker though!
Superb speakers
Great sound, can be seriously loud without distorting.
These sound louder and cleaner (distortion free at high volumes) than the Celestion 8inch 15W / 4ohm.
They can handle bass great if you use it as part of a PA system such as the Cube Street EX.
They sound ridiculously loud and also very pleasant as a guitar speaker.
Thumbs up!!!
perfect replacement for Champ Oxfird 8EV
I was checking different 8 inch 4 ohms speakers for my 71 champ silverface, and at the end i have ordered Jensen C8R after reading many reviews. indeed this speaker fits perfectly as far as dimensions and holes placement and in terms of audio it is very identical in style to the old oxford but with a very nice articulation, as the old one was a bit flat music wise. overall it kept the original tone of champ. I had to roll down the bass by 10 to 6 when i installed the Jensen.
I replaced the old speaker because i just want to preserve this Oxford speaker as it is becoming less and less available in the market. I might restore original parts if i decide to sell the amp.
Great Classic Fender Speaker
After much deliberation I chose this speaker over a Celestion and am delighted with my decision.
The speaker is employed in a Fender Champion 600 5W valve amp (same as the Gretsch G5222) which I had previously modified to take an 8" speaker - the original is 6".
Prior to fitting the Jensen I had fitted an alternative make 8" speaker and, while the alternative gave a more rounded sound over the original 6" speaker, it seemed dull and lethargic.
The 8" Jensen seems to incorporate all of the zest of the original Fender badged 6" speaker but adds greater depth without the dullness of my previous 8".
Different amps have different characters and this seems an ideal, inexpensive, upgrade to a small Fender amp as it has that controlled crispness that you associate with Fender clean tones.
I regret that I haven't had the opportunity to push this speaker into the realms of serious amp break up but it shows no indication of loss of control at a point where the amplifier is rolling in to break up territory. In that respect it seems ideal partner to a small Fender type amplifier.
The specs would suggest that the Celestion will produce a more even delivery as (according to the graphs) the Jensen seems to dip in the mid ranges. While this may be the case, and I would probably use a Celestion in a British sounding amp, I have no regrets in mating this with my Fender amp and will certainly be purchasing another Jensen speaker for my Fender 5F2a amp project.
A right little fire cracker of a speaker
Purchased this jensen cr8 as a replacement for my Bugera V5 stock speaker.
Bugera in there wisdom decided this amp should output at 4ohms...this made the search for aftermarket speakers somewhat slim...its this or a celestion.
The stock Bugera was somewhat dark and never sparkled enough.
But as soon as the Jensen was fitted it jumped into life, way more top end sparkle a brighter fuzzier breakup perfectly suited to the v5s single ended class A el84 vintage vibe.
2 weeks of break in allowed for the highs to smooth a little and the spaeker to really shine through.
It was louder too as seemed way more efficient than the Bugera stock.
Overall a very good upgrade and a must for this amp.
Great speaker for Bugera V5
I have ordered Jensen as an upgrade speaker for Bugera V5.
I liked how Bugera sounded generally, but it was a bit too dark to me, sometimes muddy (especially when playing Ibanez archtop).
Jensen is a big improvement over the stock speaker. Still nice warm sound but with smooth and clear heighs. Much brighter and less boxy.
This is an excellent match for Bugera V5.
Fabulous!
How can such a small thing be so overwhelming? This was my question when I turned on my '75 Fender Vibro Champ after replacing the speaker it had (not the original one, that one blew up, but an old beat up 4ohm 8inch speaker that was used to replace it for a while).
I was afraid the original speaker was unbeatable, but this Jensen blew my mind: it has the richness of the tone, the smooth and clear highs and the power enough to handle with home practice and little venues! A must keep, and definitely a must HAVE!
Great speaker
I put this speaker in a Silverface Vibro champ and it's just great. Stays pretty clean too with my strat, bass is plenty too. Can't wait for it to break in!
Highly recommended.
