JHS Pedals Angry Charlie V3 4-stars Reviews
Nice sound, but too noisy
I wanted a Marshall in a Box to get a different distortion flavour. With a 3-band EQ and glowing reviews I just had to try out the JHS Angry Charlie.
I found it quite similar in tonal profile to the OCD. However it's very noisy if you don't cut the signal when you're not playing. The 3-band EQ and gorgeous red won't save a pedal if it's too loud — I'd choose the JHS AT+ over this one.
Decent out of the box amp-in-a-box
I bought this to use as my main high gain sound through my Bassbreaker 15 and Blues Jr stereo / wet-dry setup, running my amps clean.
The pedal sounds good at most EQ settings. If you scoop the mids it can sound almost like a Friedman BE-OD. The pedal does however have limited treble range. I mostly wished for more highs since the Bassbreaker is very dark. So, it depends on the amp. I also find that amp-in-a-box style pedals don't work as well with low headroom (ie 15 watt) amps if you play loud, since it compresses too quickly, too much.
PROS:
- High quality as expected from JHS
- Simple to use, hard to make it sound bad
- Effective mid control
- Convincing amp-like feel
- Hooked Andy Timmons :)
CONS
- Limited Treble for some amps.
- Needs decent headroom (more than 15 watt) to be played loud
Would highly recommend for pedal platform players that need a versatile high gain sound or bedroom players looking for gain and low end at low volumes.
