Maxon OD-808 Reviews
Beautiful overdrive...using it for boost my solos on marshall silver jubilee but as a drive in front of amp (play it with vox and marshall) works also really nice.
The original green machine
Used as an actual drive/distortion this thing is wonderful, but the secret sauce lies in using it to push your valve amp to oblivion, loads of clarity from the mid hump, instant "front of mix" pedal this one!
What can I say â it's the classic
I'll be honest, this sound has been copied to perfection over the years. You can definitely get the same results for cheaper.
But this here is built excellent, it has the classic design, and it's just a pleasure to own, use, and behold.
Opinion based on: I also own the green Behringer overdrive for a good 10 years now. It's falling apart, and its pots and switch were never great. But the circuit sounds the same.
Great overdrive
If you need an overdrive, then this is a great option, probably one of the best.
Best Tube Screamer
I tried 4 different Tube Screamer pedals, this one is the best, when you're looking for a green overdrive you don't want it to be "transparent", you want that mid tones with sharp highs, this pedal does it better than any other, great dynamics and punch. besides I love the textured satin finish of This pedal matches the rest of my MXR pedals.
Suits my Marshall DSL
I play through a home rig with a Marshall DSL 5 watt and a few pedals. When I'm on the clean channel, using this pedal gives me a more classic Stevie Ray -esque driven tone. When I'm on the gain channel I use the pedal with the drive turned down and it just tightens up the sound nicely and fills it out better when Im playing at lower volumes. I would almost describe it as a more compressed tight tone. But in conclusion it works great on both channels and gets a lot of use + true bypass when not in use so no complaints here!
A classic masterpiece!
Tried many OD pedals throughout the time but this one's my favorite. Made my Dual Rectifier instantly come alive like no other pedal could. Love it!
4558D chip makes this one of the best versions of this pedal. It's a classic, not much more to say. Highly recommended!
Great booster
This is phenomenal boost pedal, drive at zero, volume on full, the best sound, but as an overdrive pedal, not too impressed. It is sturdy, great quality, Made in Japan, not chinese knockoffs.
It's like Tube Screamer, but better)
It's cool pedal middle-sized, comfortable and it makes clear and classic overdrive sound.
Pros:
- it's overdrive you are looking for
- highest quality of materials
- there is battery inside!!
Cons; -
Classic tube screamer
Fantastic classic tube screamer circuit in a well built platform. I have owned this pedal for many years and it has treated me extremly well, it has been my primary boost for this period of time and I have used this primarily into my 6505+ head and engl e530 preamp which works fantastic for classic and early 2000's metal. I wouldn't recommend this for modern metal as much however, cranking the tone control up to 3oclock will definitely get into the modern metal realm, however, doing so, provides a noticeable amount of added saturation and a loss of detail and clarity from the amp as a result, which is even more obvious when using anything that is solid state, rather than tube. In this scenario, there are other pedals that do a better job for this application such as any based on the TC integrated preamp circuit which is more of a genuine "clean boost"
Take the time to figure out how to use it
This pedal is so popular and ubiquitous that I thought you could just plug into the front of the amp and achieve instant tonal nirvana. Not so. It takes time to get to know, and rewards experimentation. Once you find the best place and settings for it in your set-up and style of music it's very useful. Depending on your amp and existing pedal board, it might not even be an "always on" but a great boost to kick in for solos or harmonies.
Best out there!
It is what it is, and its AWESOME! If tube screamer is what you're afer... look no more.
A Sledgehammer to the Front of my Amp.
I bought this pedal to go in front of my Orange Dark Terror and tighten up the low end. It did this perfectly, it also gave an entirely new level of gain to the beast that is the Dark Terror. I've been using it as a boost mostly but also for a sort of 80s rock tone and it works brilliantly. Sturdy construction and a great tone, I have nothing negative to say about this brute.
Highly recommended!
One of the best Overdrives ever
I bought this a few year back, and then sold it to try lots of other more expensive boutique overdrives. Theres tonnes on the market, but its like the old guys say, you always come back to the originals eventually. After trying tonnes of different OD pedals that I love, the Maxon still sits up there as one of the best, most effective clean boosts for modern metal. Will be buying again soon after borrowing back my old one.
Gave 4 stars for features because its very standard, but you dont need anything else here tbh. Drive at 0, Volume at 10, Tone set to taste, off you go!
Top Overdrive
The best overdrive that i ve tried till now. Sensitive controls, nice tone
can't go wrong with this, great tubescreamer to push your amp and get a tighter tone for heavy sounds, worth the money
must have original classic overdrive
I use this device as the overdrive with high gain guitar channel as my main guitar sound. It give me more controlled lows, better sustain. Us result guitar better fits in the live mix.
Classic for a reason!
You cannot go wring with this one! It`s a classic for a reason. What are you waiting for? Buy it! :)
Little extra bite
I bought it for Peavey 6505 to add a little extra bite for the distorsion. It works perfectly, I love it!
