Shure SM81

I like recording acoustic Instruments. I wanted to buy a pair of quality smal diaphragm cardioid condenser mic what has linear frequency response, and really wide transparency, so what can transmit well also below 100 Hz, and really brings high frequencies (also 15khz-20khz) without annoying colouring. So what can give a neutral and full picture of an instrument in a not distant mic position where a cardioid characteristic is enough. And I like its sound. I listened to a huge amount of records, I read tons of tech spec, user rewiews etc. Finally I found this Mics: Schoeps mk-4, Neumann km-84, Shure Sm-81. The Schoeps was the best for me. The Km-84 was the Second, Shure was the third. I needed more money for the Schoeps. The Neumann firma doesn't produce the Km 84 anymore. I bought the SM...
Neumann KM184 mt Stereo Set
Based on 14 reviews
Have had a chance to use the mics in several different recording situations. Close miking an acoustic guitar in a dry room and in NOS configuration in a concert hall on a piano and soprano soloist. The mics are fantastic quality! There is absolutely no self noise to speak of. They are crystal clean and extremely sensitive. That being said, it is important to realize that this type of response is not always what you want. There is only a slight HF lift but the the capsules are so sensitive that they seem to feature the high-frequency content of every sound source. Where a Cello a French horn or a Steinway piano in a live hall may benefit from this, other sources like a hard strummed guitar or a very bright soprano will have a tendency to have the warmth of their mid and low-mid frequency...
Rode NTG4+
Based on 12 reviews
Solid high quality shotgun microphone, as you would expect from Rode. Build quality is excellent and the included battery has very long life, so it's very reliable. The included foam windscreen isn't particularly effective, but should be good enough to handle air conditioning or sheltered outside locations in good weather. Anything stronger and you'll need to a deadcat or some other solution. The mic is strongly directional even compared to other shotgun mics I've used which is great for isolating dialogue or instruments, though it does come at the cost of some versatility. Good buy, would recommend.
SE Electronics SE8 Stereo Set
Based on 10 reviews
I write "nearly" because i used B&K 4006 for many, many years as Overheads... And i frequently tried other good mics, just to check if there is something "better"... And now after some weeks i got back to my old B&K... but i must admit, it was only a matter of taste, and habituation. The B&K are omni, and very easy to handle. And now, i use the SE8 for Acoustic guitar when i want a very smooth sound. And, for Hihats. I can only say that those SE8 are a no brainer for every recording studio, regarding the low budget price. I guess i will get another pair soon to be used also for life gigs as OH...
Rode NTG3
Based on 7 reviews
The NTG-3 has superb handling for voice dialog recording and sampling on location, though its professional high end sound makes it equally flexible for studio applications. The featured RF bias technology that rode says makes it almost completely resistant to moisture is outstanding. I spent 3 days on location in several areas with constant varying weather and moisture conditions, indoor and outdoor (using the additional appropriate equipment) the NTG-3 stayed 100% consistent - wow! Outstanding shotgun microphone that does everything you would expect a high end shotgun mic to do. Polar pattern is perfect with great side and back rejection. Gain response and volume versus distance is clean and smooth. Handles subtle and sharp physical movements extremely well using correct equipment. Sound...
Sennheiser MKH 416 P48
Based on 6 reviews
The 416 is one of the most common microphones found on-set for TV, documentaries, and amateur film productions. This is for good reason; the capsule is solid, with a rugged steel frame that's both light and sturdy allowing it to take a few hits on a busy set. The quality of sound produced by the microphone is crisp and clean. The circuitry is well made; with no offset or buzz when fed 48v phantom power. When utilised as a sync microphone it performs really well, with nice isolation on the front axis. A word of advice; this microphone's isolation is very, VERY effective, so much so that you may find you'll need some practice keeping it trained on the sound source if you're using it with a boom, before you get the sounds you're after.
Sennheiser MKH 8020 Stereo Pair
Based on 5 reviews
My speciality is the recording of birdsong. I bought a matched pair of Sennheiser MKH8020’s recently because I need microphones that will work in humid conditions and also be omni-directional. I have them a few weeks now and I am very pleased, they are every bit as fantastic as I had hoped for, the sound is crystal transparent. I had wondered about noise on the 8020’s as the work I do requires a lot of amplifier gain, but these mics did not disappoint, noise has never been a problem at all. I am becoming quite a fan of radio frequency microphones, their complete lack of modulation noise and distortion, the sound is noticeably cleaner and precise than normal capacitor mics. I have nothing at all negative to say, they may be really small but they are the ‘real deal.’...
Audio-Technica AT 4053B

I'm using this for video audio recording indoors in a semi-dampened room, on a Roycotte table shockmount going into a camera-mounted Sony K2M. The shotgun that came with the K2M was sounding too wet. Great value mic - nice sound, low noise. I listened to the Sennheiser MKH 8050, Schoeps CMC641 and this on youtube ( honestly preferred the sound of this. Sure, I'd much prefer the beautiful wooden case of the Schoeps, to the cheap vinyl case this comes in - but if it doesn't sound better to my ear, I can't really justify the extra. I'd love to try them all with my own voice, but didn't have time & couldn't find this mic for sale in the UK anyway. To be honest, it sounds a lot better closer to the talent, than I have it. I don't know if the Schoeps or Sennheiser would solve that...
Shure KSM 141 ST Stereoset
Based on 4 reviews
Do you mic your drums with 2 overheads, a mic on each Tom, the kick, snare Hi-Hats, etc, etc? STOP. Instruments are heard through their transduction with the air around them. Mechanical energy changing into sound waves, heard by our ears. It is so much easier to use this relationship by using the microphones far enough away from the drums to allow the microphones to "Hear" the air. I have been an avid user of close micing techniques in live situations for years. I stopped when I bought the Shure KM 141 stereo set. These two microphone now do the work of 4 or more microphones and I not longer have to fight the drum sound all night long, I let the drummer play and with a pair of these microphones, a mic on kick and if needed a mic on snare for brushes, I have the best drum sound...
Schoeps Mono-Set MK 41
Based on 4 reviews
