Great Upgrade from SM57

Good for vocals, guitar and drums. Great all around, can't go wrong with this microphone.

Similar to SM57 but with supercardioid polar pattern reducing spill from other instruments. Sounds a little harder and brighter than the sm57. Perfect on snare when you only can use a snare top mic.

Superb quality for all purposes

I was told by a studio engineer that you could not get any better than this microphone for all uses, not just vocals. I have invested in this microphone for my vocals on my own pa system and it is much more pronounced and clear. It also can bring out the sound of any instrument of my choice when performing including guitar, banjo, low whistle. A must have for any performer or studio engineer.

A true workhorse mic

I have three of these in my mic collection. Great for most applications. Stick it on a snare drum, horns, a guitar amp or even a drum vocal. It just sounds good. Build quality could be better though, the shock ring is easy to lose and the beta branding plate tends to fall off after a year or two's use.

Although not the flattest response, the directionality and price make this an easy go-to mic to carry for emergencies

Now a classic, as is the SM57 and SM58...

To me, this mic earned his rank among the other Shure "classics". It's construction is indestructible. It sounds even better than the classic SM58 (or Beta58) on vocals and provides great rejection. It also shines on many other sources, amps, percs, etc. Provides a more 'fat' snare sound than the tradiotional SM57. At that price, you can't go wrong!

The first mic I've ever loved.

After trying to get decent sound from both a Rode NT-1A and an SE Electronics large diaphragm condenser mics into my DAW for a good many years I'd all but given up. Yeah, sounded ok but...well you know.

Anyway I thought I'd try an SM58. I mean...folk like them so I've heard haha. After trying it though it turns out I'm not one of them so back it went. (switch was also faulty on it but that's another story). I was getting more and more disheartened when a friend suggested the Shure Beta 57A (the one this review is about). And you know what?...Perfect, really just that. Pop shield in front of it, gain turned up on my audio interface (no phantom power needed woohoo), sang straight ahead into the front of it and there it was. The sound I've been searching for. Not boomy just perfect. No sound in from the rest of the room either. Directional you know :). Another plus is that I can also use it for recording instruments. It's not even that expensive. I can't say enough good things about the Beta 57A. I'm really, really happy with it. So there you go. Just get one :)

I use it for my drummers vocal. Works very well on instruments too.

Classic & Indestructable

My first Shure Dynamic, just an hour here, didn't record enough to make a professional nuanced comment, but sounds like expected: very good. Will use it for handpan, strings, drums and a bit of vocal. The build is.... impressive. If you are attacked by a metal band, this will knock them out. Only joking. Peace & music to ya'all.

Great value!

Great mic for snare and vocals!! Brighter and softer sounding than the standard 57 with nicer sounding bleed overall. Not much to say here. Good value for the money.

Good improvement from the original 57 counterpart

So far I've use the Beta57 on guitar amps and micing snare/toms on drums and this mic thrives in those situations.

After doing some shootouts with the original 57, the overall sound is almost the same as the original but with reduced bleed so when used for close micing on a drum kit it sounds slightly clearer. The construction also feels a lot sturdier than its original counterpart with the new mesh head.

There aren't any cons for this mic as far as I've been able to pin point and I intend on building an army of them in the future

An excellent mic for any studio, if you want great results with both instrument recording and voice!

I have always purchased Shure microphones over the years, and the quality of this mic is no exception to their rule of top quality sound!

It is well made, sturdy, and comes with a case to add protection when/if travelling.

I'm using it for both voice and instruments, and it works perfectly with both! I had read reviews elsewhere that it was "more of an instrument mic", but I needed just one mic, (on a budget), and took the chance with this one, as others had reviewed that it worked perfectly well for both.

Glad I did because they were right. The clarity that I know of and loved in the past, from Shure mics when singing, is no less present in this model than others I've heard and owned.

Be sure to order the correct lead for this mic when purchasing, as it is not supplied with one.

Always good

Great microphone for instruments particularly in live situations where we use them for drums if we need to, I personally use it on a guitar amp cabinet when recording, sometimes in conjunction with a condenser and then pick which fits into the mix the best. Quite often it's the 57 A that gets used.

Great on live vocals.

Changed from a Beta SM58 to one of these and now my vocals cut through the monitor mix onstage and the extra clarity in the midrange is great. Our sound engineer loves them.

Great mic!

Amazing mic for snare drum! A bit more boxy than a 57 but with much less bleed! This allows you to be more aggressive with the EQ later without having tons of Hi-Hat spill.

Also built like a tank, as usual with Shure Microphones.

I compared this with the original sm57, this has less cymbal bleeds and the snare body is warmer with this mic, great snare mic of choice
