tc electronic Helix Phaser Reviews
Deep phaser, good sound but needs a computer to use it 100%.
Connected to a computer for editing, it is a powerful phaser with lots of options. Needs more memory slots to store more programs, so that you can recall them on stage live without a pc. Well built.
So versatile
Like the vintage option.
Good, versatile phaser pedal.
I've tried many phaser pedals, the TC Helix phaser is the most versatile of all. Much more valuable than much more expensive pedals Especially for acoustic guitar. The only downside, in my opinion, is the slight lack of analog heat.
Very versatile and have a nice tone! LIke all TC pedals that I use.
Real organic phaser
This pedal adds a fantastic color palette to anything you may be playing. It is smooth, surrounding atmosphere... it wraps up the sound with life from the background without taking full protagonism.
Great effect!
Quality Phaser
Versatile phaser,no complains.
Build quality is good and works as it is supposed to.
Phaser with much versatility
I have looked for a long time to get a phaser. I remember the first effect I purchased was one, decades ago. Now that I have finally switched to electric guitar after decades of acoustic playing, I had to start finding one that suits this instrument.
I cannot but have praise for this pedal. I am delighted by it.
It is purely subjective but with years of acoustic behind me, the intrinsic attention to clarity and presence is still a value even though I do venture into uncharted territories with electric guitar effects like overdrives and distortions.
The quality of this pedal is without reproach. Well build !
And this Toneprint editing for a personal effect, always at hand, is a BIG plus indeed!
very good phaser
Pro: There's a lot of possibilities to get vintage and modern tones. TonePrints and stereo/mono in/out.
Con: none
Can put to bed my Electro Harmonix Small Stone
A Phaser to me is an acquired taste and I like it. I was using an original 70s Electro Harmonix Small Stone for years and sadly it was only the rust on the casing keeping it together and had come to the end of it's gigging days, one more stomp wold have been it's last. So I was looking for a replacement.
The old EH only had one knob so it was either on or off so a mix level is a nice addition. Therefore subtle is the key for this pedal. It can make a creamy rich swirl thickening up a nice clean or distorted sound without being too in your face. As I say subtle as it can also produce vomit inducing sonic wobble if too much.
When the Helix is switched to the 'Smooth' setting it really makes a good if not better replication of my old Small Stone, unlike the EH it is built like a brick so it should last well. It has a very clean sound and little to no background noise.
The tone print is a nice feature, but as I have found with other TC pedals, I very rarely need something which is outside of the standard available settings and this is no exception, if you need sounds outside of the standard on this pedal then you must be playing really 'experimental' music.
All in all a very nice pedal, does the 'phaser thing' very well, so very happy with the purchase. Highly recommended.
Very versatile Phaser
This phaser is great if you want a ton of different sounds.
The smooth and the vintage flick switch offer 2 distinctively different tones.
I've been using smooth a lot more for high gain solos as it cuts through similarly to an auto wah with more depth.
The vintage setting is great for cleans and open picked chords.
It fits nicely on the pedalboard and doesn't take up much room. Easy to use knobs and the excellent tone print features make this a no brainer.
The only con is you can't quite get than authentic phaser 90 sound but you can come very close.
I would recommend this pedal for any board missing a phaser.
Superb Phaser.
I had the MXR Van Halen but this one is more versatile .
Yet the same sound of the MXR is no problem to dial in.
The best phaser i've tried so far.
really nice
it`s a very nice pedal, it`s also so good that you have control on the loudness of the effect with the mix knob, i had other phaser pedals before and there would be a massive jump on the volume whenever i switched them on, so this is a good choice if you like your phaser after the distortion.
Very versatile, very robust, and is very yellooooow!
TC Electronic Helix Phaser - Set To Stun !
TC Electronic take the digital approach to their pedals (otherwise you couldn't have TonePrint) and I am well impressed with their HyperGravity Compressor, particularly the low noise of the digital implementation. The price of the Helix Phaser is comparable with the analogue devices (Vintage original and new). The digital technology gives the possibility of exceptionally wide (even extreme) control of the sound. With ultra low noise, this is capable of incredible depth. The option of a personalised TonePrint will take me some time to explore, but the standard range of control is really impressive. There is no trace of noise from this pedal I can only say it's "Studio quality" and depending on if you're prepared to spend some time customising your own TonePrint it is possible to get exactly what you want out of it. This really is 21st century electronics! Occasionally I have resorted to using a Flanger instead of a Phaser for many years, simply because no other simple Phaser was "In your face" enough. Flangers are usually just that bit too "Metallic" sounding. Phasers are just too subtle and until now there was no Phaser to really "Grab your attention". The official website demo's really grabbed my attention with the sheer depth and power possible! Now I can really "Set Phaser to Stun"!
Best Phaser?
TC describe this pedal as 'The most flexible and versatile phaser ever' which is a very bold statement but I think they may be right.
Firstly the connections are stereo in and stereo out but it can also be run in mono. The inputs can handle high impedance guitar inputs and line level equally well which gives you a great range of connection options - not only just in the placement and ordering of this pedal in your effects chain but also in using this with keyboards or other instruments as well as for post-processing and mixer effects loops.
The three main settings from the toggle switch give you 'Vintage' which can be great for emulating phase 90 and small stone style phasing. 'Smooth' is a much more vowel like sound. The third mode is 'Tone Print' which is one of the most innovative features for effect pedals ever - if you've never tried a toneprint pedal I suggest you do. This allows you to 'beam' a configuration for the internal settings through your phone or PC or edit your own configuration through your PC.
Creating and editing your own toneprint is what truly makes this 'The most flexible and versatile phaser ever' as it is very simple to download and use and tweak to your heart's content. My only gripe with this is that there is no explanation of what the settings are actually doing it terms of how a phaser works - most are obvious but a few are not. Still, this doesn't stop you fiddling with them to hear the difference they make to the sound.
My only other gripe is that the stereo input and output jacks are reasonably close together so that two Hicon pancake style jacks will not fit next to each other, but all my other jacks are fine.
Overall, this is a truly versatile phaser which could only be made better by the addition of an expression pedal input.
