Xaphoon de Catalunya C Olive Wood

I have been playing the Xaphoon for many years. First the bamboo version, then the ABS plastic version and now this one made from olive wood. It has instantly become my favourit. It feels a touch lighter in the hand and the sound is a little warmer and softer. The sound is elegant and has a lot of heart! The response is clean up and down the scale. I normally us a strengh 3.0 reed but found the olive version sounded better with a softer, 2.5. I still love the plastic version as you can travel with it and it is totally unaffected by climate. This olive wood version naturally needs more caring and looking after (mopping, cleaning, oiling), but you'll definitely develop a stronger bond with this instrument. I absolutely love it!

I was always curious how playing the sax feels, and I like its sound very much. So, without breaking the bank to get a sax which I may or may not use, I got a Xaphoon. It's a very interesting instrument. I like the fact that it's very small and unpretentious, virtually maintenance free. Despite its size, it produces a nice full sound. I also bought a 1.5 rico royal reed, as some have recommended for beginners. I will experiment after I become reasonably adept to see if I like that better than the original 2.5 reed. I only rated it 4 stars for quality, because on the sides you can see the lines where the plastic was molded. However, that does not influence the playing or comfort, since you never touch that area during playing. So the finish isn't anything to write home about, but then...

I already had the "plastci version", this bamboo is a good upgrade. for me it is better Bb because its allow a little more room for my big fingers. And I love the smoky smell/taste of this instrument.. nothing you can "hear", but something interesting if you believe in your "connection" with the instrument you play...

So I saw it and thought...why not. Some much richer sounds emerge from the end of this little thing that you would credit - if you can manage it. Takes quite a bit of puff - more say than a sax, so not for the weak lungged. Also more control required on the reed pressure to get the full range of notes. Very nice quality and feel and you can still smell the hot poker that burned the fingerholes! Small, portable, versatile but challenging. Should you get one? Why not?
