Best Thomastik Spirocore Double Bass 3/4 med Alternatives

This review does not actually pertain to the 3/4 Solo's I just bought, it pertains to the 3 sets of Spiro's I bought earlier, in '83 and '84. All are still doing well, and I did not buy the new set as a replacement, just for another instrument. In my mind Spiro's are the ultimate jazz strings, and arco they do well too, but require precise bowing. Beyond that, their character is described sufficiently elsewhere. If after 10 years or so they get darker because of dirt, grime & BLO, you can take them off & wipe them clean with a rag & solvent, and they are back to the perfect 1 year old string. So while I originally thought they were very expensive (then about the same as now, but back then that was quite a lot), they are actually very cost-effective strings.

Using these strings on 5 string J.Rubner bass. These 4 sound beautiful and the thing is that you can find great double basses with a strings like that in every concervatory, academy of music, because It's the cheapest and best strings for a price like that. In opinion playing pizzicato with these strings is great, the quality of the sound is professional, but I would rather play with more tensioned strings, because these are a little bit low tension. There is a good point of it - you can keep the strings further because it's very easy to press them, even when you play thumb positions. Playing with a bow is perfect option in orchestras with these strings, because these get strong and specific sound. So this is a perfect choice for everybody. These strings have an amazing pizz sound. The tension is a little lower than spiro weichs but makes pizz playing really kind to the right hand. Also the strings are really well make. A lovely flexible string which is bright under the bow but none of the scratch of spiros. They are the best 'hybrid' string i have ever played. They are supposed to be a pizz string and sound awesome with a punchy fundamental and a loud and long sustain . Bright but not too bright. They move effortlessly under the bow also. i love love love these strings. i have been a bit spiro weich user but these strings are much better for me who plays a lot of jazz pizz and some orchestral stuff too. Highly recommend these strings. The only thing now i need to learn is how long they last? The steel rope core hopefully...

Recommend Daddario Helicore strings HH610 G 3/4 for Bass for the following reasons: play very well with an excellent compromise between a duality bow and pizzicato. These strings can be well applied in the Classical style with bow or played in jazz style by pizzicato technique. Provide an excellent " snoring" are very efficient, with a very clean sound, round, brilliant. Has a good attack, good volume and also sustain. The tension of the bass improved a lot, because the strings have a comfortable tension, are flexible and soft when compared with the basic chords that brought the factory. I am very pleased with them, now it seems another bass!

As a rockabilly/rock'n'roll bass player I was always looking for strings, that are easy to play kinda nylon like but with real tone in it. I tried dozens of sets over the years from cheap weedwackers for about twenty bucks a set up to custom made "gut-a-like". In a string comparison in the german Musiker-Board.de I tested these strings to many other sets: My result is clear. This set puts a full mighty tone with lots of sustain to the bass and is still very easy to play. For beginners I would recommend light gauge/tension. Experienced players should try the medium set. They stay perfectly in tune, very reliable and make your doghouse sound impressive. They are also real good for pure acoustic playing (quite loud!). Try them, you won't be dissapointed.

These strings are great. They improved the sound of my double bass a lot in comparison to the cheap set that I had on before. They have a better feel also. I play a bit of jazz, folk and pop music and these strings are good for all of them. I use the bow very rarely and they sound good with the bow also. The sound is very balanced across all strings with nice bottom end and well defined middle and top end. The only thing I found not to be so good about theses string is the slap sound. It is doesn't seem to be bright enough, but they are just about usable for that.

These strings have nylon core, which is flatwound with nylon on the G and D strings, and with monel on the A and E strings. The strings have a comfortable soft feel, with a lighter tension than most steel strings, and good tone and volume. I play Bluegrass, Jazz and Country-Blues. They are flexible and durable enough for comfortable slapping, but because of the different materials they sounds completely different from each other. The top strings have kind of a "tan" color to the wrapping, so they almost appear to be gut strings from a distance. They have a light feel but still have a warm tone. You might consider this set to be a alternative to gut strings if you want some of that flavor -- but with more definition and longer sustain than real gut. Furthermore the strings sounds...

I played a solo concert recently on a bass fitted with these strings . The tension is low, compared to Spirocore mediums but not so low as to be flapping around. They have a bright front edge (pizz and arco) and a fairly full sustain. They work pretty well arco and I think after working with them for some time would be quite nicely balanced between pizz and arco. Because they are wound with copper (I think) they make a lot of noise with finger movement... I imagine a lot of people would hate this but playing solo, that tempted me into some different areas . I did have a lot of fun ! Listening back to the recording I was surprised how little the finger-string-noise stood out. Overall the recorded sound is really nice - full and punchy. So, I ordered a set to try out on my German bass .. :)...

After experimenting with a range of strings, I have now settled on these as the best all-round strings for my playing, which is a mix of arco and pizzicato. They give that lovely rich, dark growl when played pizzicato low down; sing sweetly high up the neck; and give a good arco sound, although perhaps not as rich as some strings made specifically for that purpose. The quality seems excellent and I have not yet managed to wear a set out, as I've changed basses a couple of times in the last couple of years.

When you open the string packet under the leaf it says "I was so happy I couldn't stop playing". OK no pressure then. I had heard about the Evah Pirazzi strings on various bass blogs and websites and after about 3 years with my last set of Pirastro hybrids I thought I would take a chance. Being a double bass player is a hard job. It looks easy and bass guitarists usually think it's a bit like playing a big acoustic but the wear and tear on muscles and fingers can be serious.
