Midrange best microphone

If you are looking for an all purpose, general microphone, then the AKG P420 your best bet.

This is simply because this microphone can be used for about any application will sound good.

Polar pattern, background noise, proximity/distance, all is overall value.

I recommend.

Great budget choice

Pros:

- options (polar pattern, pad, low cut)

- sturdy build

- clear sound

The sound is on the brighter side and not very warm, so for that type of sound you will want to look elsewhere. The heavy weight might be an issue with lighter mic stands.

Polar patterns work well, omni picks up 360 pretty flawlessly and the rejection in cardioid and figure 8 is pretty good. I haven't tried the low cut and pad as of yet, but they're nice to have as options.

Polar Patterns at Low Cost

Wow, where else will you find a microphone of this build, for this price, with this much flexibility?

If you're a home-based producer/engineer and looking to utilise mid-side recording techniques, this microphone's figure-8 polar pattern is phenomenal. Alongside the omni and cardioid polar patterns, combined with the HPF and -20dB pad built in, you can't make a wrong choice at this price.

The shock mount and case included are a big plus - this is a must have anywhere on low to mid-budget projects. The vocals sound crisp but not overly boosted in the high end like you get with a lot of cheap(er) condenser microphones. It doesn't feel fragile - more like solid and robust. Still, i'm not going to be dropping it any time soon.

I would recommend this for recording acoustic guitars, vocals, ambience and more subtle instrumentation i.e. piano, harp also.

The ability to utilise the fig-8 and omni patterns in many situations with such a reasonably priced microphone is outrageous, you'd be missing out by not buying this!

If you are looking for a sturdy all-round microphone that's good for many applications, this is a wise choice. It's got crisp highs and very nice even tones throughout the range. It also has switchable polar patterns including a 'figure 8'. So if - like me - you need a mic for mid/side technique, this one does the job nicely. Excellent value.

So far, excellent!

I’ve had a pair of these microphones for a couple of weeks now, and I’m really impressed.

Great feature set for the money - acoustic guitars with both of these in a mid/side configuration are really nice

A MUST in its category

just as described in many reviews, a great mic for its price.

I haven't tried it with acoustic instruments yet, but with the voice it delivers great recording quality

Great Mic

I got this mic to cover two way conversations on a podcast. UIt does the job very well. I also have a P120. To be honest, the 120 is a slightly nicer, more full bodied sound for a single (male) vocal. But really happy with this one also.

Amazing Mic

This Mic is one of the best ever. Close to the famous Newman, love it for the home studio.

Great microphone, need to learn to use it

Overall this is a great microphone, and very versatile given the multiple patterns. What I see is, you have to find the sweet spot with positioning, and the proper room for ideal acoustics. Mic is very sensitive. Sound wise, i would prefer a bit brighter sounding mic, the response is flat here, very neutral, which is understandably the preference for professional studio recording, where there is no overcolouring, and you can adjust the EQ later. But I found I needed to add a bit more EQ on the high frequencies as usual, for the vocals to cut through. Regardless. I just tested the mic once, I am sure, that with some more practice and tweaking, and using different preamp, the results will be much better.

Perfect microphone for studio use!

USE: I use it in my home studio.

CLARITY: When I received it I was impressed with the build quality and also with the included case. When I started using it, i was even more impressed due to the sound and possibility to use it for different occasions (so for recording guitar, voice etc.).

PROS: Definitely build quality, included case and possibility of switchable characteristics.

CONS: Not any!

COMPREHENSIBILITY: I use it to record different things and in every one I was able to record really good sound. It is amazing for recording accordions, guitars and voices.

FURTHER INFORMATION: For such amount of money I am almost sure that you can not get any better studio microphones. I really recommend it because it can be used for different situations. Everything you need for that microphone is inside the included case. I only recommend pop filter for using it while using microphone for singers.

Good Mic For A Good Price.

I Nice Allround Mic for a Good Price. I use it with a SSL VHD preamp and wondering how it will sound with a different preamp. Have a 500 series preamp in mind.

Totally satisfied!

I use this mic in my homestudio to record vocals , classical guitars and whatever kinds of percussion ..

from its 3 polar patterns i mostly use the cardioid and it suits me excellent , i just didn't have the need to use the other two yet, although they feel great .

i love its tone , its very clean and gives a nice warmth like the one you find in the really expensive studio mics..

a great value tool plus i got it on a discount so it was a kind of steal !!

Happy to have it at my disposal!

An amazing surprize

I wanted a microphone for rap in the 2-300$ price range. After many months of research, i narrowed it down to 4 mikes with the P420 being my final choice. I wanted a mike that has a warm low end and also silky smooth highs, and I was surprised to hear this mike in action. It has an amazing sound for it's price range, and great versatility with all the functions it has. I got it on a sale for 175E and I still can't believe to this day, after 1 year of use, i paid so little for this amazing mike. Also, for the money, you get that great shockmount and case which both have great build quality and use. I cannot see myself recommending any other microphone for a home studio in this price range, just give it a chance, you will be blown away!
