Harley Benton B-550 White Progressive Series 5-stars Reviews
So Good I Bought The 450 Version
The B 550 is so good I bought the 4 string version and will put different strings on it for a totally different sound. All the reviews online that I saw said your basses are great and they are
great quality at an affordable price
bought this for my bass player in my band and i must say the low end on this bass is very impressive as well as the tone when you play slap bass is just satisfying keep up the great work @ harley benton
This bass slams!
Recorded several records and EPs with this one. I love it!
You can really make this bass sound as good as the basses in much higher price range!
Amazing bass
I bought this because I needed a bass for my studio and it feels great to play
Was very surprised. great bass.
I've had this bass for about a year now. I was expecting to have to mod the heck out of it and at this price there was no worries. Turned out I was wrong about modding. This thing still plays and sounds great. nothing else needed.
Awsome bass for the price
I really wanted a 5 string and saw this and said, wow this is cheap af, it probably sounds like sh*t
after a while i bought it and when i got it, it felt so good
the bass came in perfect conditions with no marks on it
I strongly recommend this bass if you want a cheap 5 string bass
Don't hesitate, this is a really good bass
Can you gig this bass? I am
above is the DI track from the digital desk at the venue, I've even left my playing mistakes and lax timing in. I was playing in passive mode with the blend centred, bass boosted and a slight cut on treble. That's right you can still boost the bass and cut the treble in passive mode. This is a fairly unique feature I feel.
I'm happy with the 5th (B) string in particular, listen to the clip, those low Cs and Ds really thunder, especially in the flesh through a decent amp. The B doesn't feel floppy.
As expected with dual buckers it's silent when you are not playing, no humming. I was pleasently suprised to see that the bass is also shielded at the factory too. Likewise everything has been grounded correctly too, I can touch the pickups and all other screw heads and fittings with no buzzing.
The tuning pegs keep the guitar in tune. I transport this bass in a soft gig bag and it's virtually always still in tune when I get it back out of the case.
I set this bass up to my liking with plenty of play left in the adjustments. I use plectrums as I don't have feeler gauges. I set the truss rod so I can just about get a 0.5mm under the 7th fret when the first fret is capoed and I fret the last fret (this is neck relief for those new to guitar setups). I set the action at the 12th fret to about 1.4mm (G string) to 2.1mm (B string). No annoying buzzes if I play lightly, I can get that fret buzz when digging in for rock and when slapping though. Access right up to the last fret isn't an issue. No neck dive to speak of really.
Cons: price considered there arn't really any to write home about. The neck pocket could be a little tighter, this is a visual thing though and I suspect it doesn't effect the tone much if at all. The blend knob isn't the nice 3 way smooth blend you might expect, it very much acts as a 3 way switch, don't expect to experiment with 25% neck PU and 75% bridge. It's either 100% neck, 50:50 or 100% bridge. This isn't a bad thing though. The 3 sounds are great especially when used with bass and treble EQ controls.
This has become my main player. It's light, easy to play and versatile. I also don't worry about leaving it in my car or unsupervised at the venue. All I needed to do was swap the strings (I use Dunlop Birght Nickels 45-125). You might get the odd person sneer because it's a no-name brand. Just wow them with your playing and groove and they'll come around.
Brutal purchase
Not a single complaint on this one. Bought it as my first bass. It came neatly packed with all the bits and screws, not a single scratch. Playability is amazing too,the neck is smooth, the fingerboard is smooth, there are small fret filing mistakes but no harm whatsoever. Highly recommend!
good bass guitar
good guitar ! I took it for myself because I wanted to try a five-string bass! as a result , I am quite satisfied ! another argument: I wanted to try active bass! for his purposes , he is wonderful ! I can't compare with the bass guitars of famous brands, but I think he's very cool for his money)))) a little overshadowed that I found a crack on the paintwork! it goes right in the middle around the soundboard ! but it looks like a thin hair ! so it doesn 't really bother ! I can 't say for sure whether he arrived like this or has already become like this as a result of my use ! therefore , according to all criteria , I gave him five stars !
As a beginner of 9 month this is an absolutely fantastic bass.
set up ready out of the box just needed a tune and sounds and feels wonderful, much lighter than I thought it would be but that's a positive
I have had the original from a big brand that this was a copy of yes the original is a little better in each way but for 4 times the price! for the home / hobby or even part time gigging bass player i know i would be buying one of these again not the big brand
Nice Budget Bass!
Very Impressed with the quality, and finish. needs a good setup, and it will be ready to jam and record new music.
GREAT product - really good
I saw a guy playing one of these on youtube - he is a pro from spain I think. So I got one - they are cheap as chips - but don't let that fool you - the one I got is excellent the action is perfect out the box. The bass stays in tune and is lovely to play the neck feels great and the balance is perfect on lap or on strap. FANTASTIC guitar! Best bass I've had and I've just sold a very creditable bass brand and kept this one!!! WORTH every penny!!
Nice Base
Looks as good as it sounds
Fantastic Bass
This is my third Harley Benton Progressive series bass, and I cannot praise them highly enough. I've owned, and used some top end basses in my time an these basses are equal to if not better than those, and have in fact become my go to gig basses which now travel all over Europe with me. It's tonal range is great from a nice harmonic ping to a deep growling bass that'll wake your ancestors. So no matter what style of music you play you'll find a tone that will suit.
The look of this bass is a head turner somewhere between a Warwick Streamer and an Spector which would indicate a lot of thought has gone into the design. The electronics are fairly simple, yet effective, and very quiet, no hum!
I can promise you you won't find anything better for the money, and if you spend more money you might just be wasting it
good
I've had it for around 1.5 months at the time of writing this review. It came set up well. I only had to fix the intonation on the highest string. Fret ends were not sharp either. Guitar stays in tune well. Not a lot of fret buzz even with a very low action. I don't see any problems with it except that there is a slight rumbling noise coming from inside the body when plucking open strings hard, possibly something loose but not that bothersome and it doesn't get picked up by the pickups. The neck is nice and thin. The guitar is very light and well balanced, no neck dive or anything like that. The bass and treble controls still work even when the preamp is bypassed, which is a bit unusual. When played in passive mode, the signal is not as hot as when the preamp is engaged which is expected. As for the sound: The pickups sound a bit muddy in my opinion, I find myself boosting the treble and cutting the bass usually. Sounds good in the mix though. Overall, you can not go wrong with this guitar. It can simply not be beaten for the price you pay for it.
Amazing value for money
This is my first bass and I got it purely for recording as Im mainly a guitarist so I didnt want to bust the bank and what a decision it was. Bass came very well set up, neck was perfect and it sounds great. Only downside are the small gaps at the neck pocket but for the price you really cant complain
Amazing quality for the price
I bought this bass as I am building my own small studio at home, and I obviously want to be able to record whatever without depending on nothing or anybody whenever I want to.
The bass came perfectly packed, ordered on Thursday/Friday (can't remember exactly) and was at my place by Monday, amazing as always.
In general the quality of the build was almost perfect, only 2 small imperfections:
1. The jack plate wasn't perfectly centered on the side of the body, risulting in the plate itself popping out of a mm or 2 from the top of the body.
2. The fretboard was rather dry, and you could clearly feel it by touch and just by looking at it.
It has to be said that these are details that do not compromise the sound of the instrument in any way whatsoever, therefore I didn't and still don't care.
Especially considered the fact that everything else, such as the finish of the body, frets and related edges, neck finish, pickup alignment, headstock design, all absolutely perfect, completely spot on.
Furthermore the instrument feels extremely balanced and comfortable, not too heavy at all, and very very nice to play with a great sustain I must say.
Once hooked up to an amp, the sound is very pleasant, full and rich in dynamics. The different controls give a great aid in shaping the sound according to one's liking, and allow the instrument to be played in several genres of music, from metal to blues, rock, pop, maybe even jazz.
I must say I am totally blown away by this instrument, considering what I have paid for it, and considering that for any other brand, to get something that sounds like this, I would have had to spend at least 3 times the price.
Definitely recommended to anyone who needs a great bass and is on a budget, or to any player looking to approach a 5 string for the first time.
A great Bass all around!
I bought this as my first Bass after playing Guitar for 10 years and it exceeded my expectations.
First of all, the built quality is great! The bass looks great and has no chipped paint at all, not even around the screw holes which is often a problem with more affordable guitars in general. All the Hardware sits nice and fit on the body and does its job well.
The Neck looks very nice and feels great to play. The fretboard is nice to move around on and the frets themselves are even and don't have any sharp edged.
More importantly, about the sound. Its great!
A very nice, warm sound and thanks to the active circuit a lot of different tones are achievable. The pickups do their job well, but in instruments in this price range a pickup change could enhance the sound some more.
I can't name a single complain and a few of my bass playing friends didn't have any either.
I can recommend this Bass to everyone who wants a great beginner instrument or a first try at a 5 String Bass.
Fantastic for the price!
This is a fantastic bass for the price. It is lightweight and has a solid construction. I didn't find any problems with quality control, so on that front it was all good. The only thing I'd do would be to upgrade the pickups, but that said, the stock pickups are decent enough and that is something that can be done later on down the line. You get a decent sound from it, and I would definitely buy another one again in the future if I needed.
