Harley Benton PB-20 SBK Standard Series Reviews
Good quality good value
You won't find a better quality better looking bass for the money
Exactly what i wanted
Outwardly they are beautiful. Everything is comfortable in the hands, access to the frets is good. Great sustain, I was very surprised. The tuning pegs hold well. Quite comfortable. It is quite heavy in weight, but it is comfortable for me to ride with him during rehearsals. Excellent readability. Great to playing Rock.
Further saying: the bass bulges out of the mix. Heard always and everywhere. For this I love him separately, because I don't like it when the bass is muffled and left at the base; when this readability is characteristic of the instrument, then all questions like “Shut it up, return to the place” disappear.
I can't believe how such a cool thing could be so cheap.
DAMN GOOD!
Highly recommended!
Bought this bass for learning the instrument, and I'm really surprised how good this sounds. Had to adjust the neck a bit, but that's ok. Looks awesome also. :)
Really Blown away!
I wasn't expecting it to be quite as good as it is, ok so it's heavy, built like a tank, man so much better than i thought, looks great, sounds great, a little setup and bingo, Amazing!
Ok so you can not compare it to really expensive models but does it hold tuning? yes
can you practice with it? yes
can you record with it? yes
What more can i say, great bass guitar.
My mind was blown out !
Sounds really good, a nice range of tones and last but not least looks very sexy!
Awesome for the price
I had been toying with purchasing a Harley Benton guitar for some time, after watching several reviews on youtube from some very experienced guitarists/bassists and producers.
So, I had the "need" for a new bass, So i turned my attention towards the HB range, and this model caught my eye. Cool matte black paint, simple P-bass setup. perfect for the job, and for the money I thought why risk second hand, especially in the COVID-19 period.
So I pulled the trigger and the bass along with a couple of accessories arrived from Germany to the UK in approx 2 days, via UPS Impressive!!Out fo the box the bass needed a little setting up as I had a bit of fret buzz, Truss rod adjusted I checked the string height and the intonation... all pretty much bang on. No sharp fret edges, which I've had on basses 4 times this price, changed the strings for some HB branded 045's as the originals felt scratchy, lemon oil'd fretboard and voila.
Also the scratch plate is much nicer on this than other HB basses. Only complaint is the tuners are notchy, but for the money don't hesitate, it makes a great platform for mods
Cheap Prec
Great instrument, great setup, tone, nice to play... for funny price... it's very pretty indeed... If you need prec bass buy this one! You will not regret it! 5 stars...
greta bass!!!
it surely does worth its money price!!!
Exactly what i was looking for
I needed a 2nd bass for practice as my main is set up for alt tuning. Finish looks great. Comfortable neck and the pickup has a fat vintage tone. It crossed the Atlantic and arrived in near-perfect tuning! Best value all around.
This was bought for playing gigs, straight from the box after a little tune up, this bass was just great, a little buzz on the lower E string but soon rectified by a little tweek, for the cost you will not be able to beat this item. Delivered 5 days after ordering. Don't look anywhere else for a cracking bass.
Great bass a real bargain
Great looking and sounding well made instrument.
Perfect studio and performing bass.
This bass is amazing at everything it does.
I brought this bass to keep at home to record music, it has an amazing tone and sound. That topped with its amazing looks you can’t go wrong for £100.
The only thing I disliked are the strings but I chucked D’ Addario strings on and the sound was amazing, I may also upgrade the pickups the fender custom 60s. Other than that it is a definite buy if you’re a beginner or have been playing for years.
Pretty much set up out of the box!
This bass arrived with a much better setup and fret ends were better dressed than the last pb-20 I ordered. No issues at all with this one!
I've since ordered a jb-75 and am hoping it's in as good of shape.
Very good basic PBass
Came out of the box totally setup and ready to go and the finish was flawless. Really impressive for the price.
Edit: 6 Months after initial purchase and this is the easiest playing bass i own and the tone is brilliant. I've strung it with stainless steel for brightness and pure nickel strings for a mellow warm tone and it shines in every situation. Love it.
An amazing instrument
HB PB-20 SBK: 88 EUR, shipping to France included...?
Quality:
I'm no stranger to the handy-work that's sometimes required to render new acquisitions playable, and honestly, I expected to spend some time with this baby...
Initial inspection after unpacking the instrument left me quite surprised though.
Neck relief: perfect.
Action: a little high for my taste, but already quite good.
Fret finish: not super-shiny & polished, but nothing wrong with it; smooth all the way through. No sharp edges along the neck. All good.
Fret board: some minor traces of white (dusty) residue, but easily removed with a brush/cloth.
The paint-job is a really nice - the satin finish looks killer, and I could not spot any imperfections.
The neck-joint is flawless - no gaps, rock-solid.
Closer inspection of the fretwork didn't reveal any issues. All well leveled.
After a little TLC & Wax for the fret board, I lowered the action to suit my preferences. No buzzing, no problem-spots/frets. Very comfortable now.
The hardware is OK. The tuners are a bit tough-going compared to more expensive parts, but a little grease here & there...problem solved.
A glance under the pick guard reveals some left-over saw-dust, but otherwise, things are in order.
Playability / Sound:
Played dry, it's present, good attack & bite. The vibration propagates nicely throughout body & neck, the sustain is good. No obvious dead spots.
The instrument is very light and quite well balanced, although - being very picky - a wee bit heavy on the head. Nothing serious though, and a good strap easily takes care of that.
Amplified, the sound is remarkably good. The pickup is not of the fattest order, but delivers good output & the dry characteristics of the instrument shine through quite well.
The tone control is efficient, and cuts the high frequencies without affecting the upper mid range bite; the sound remains present at all settings.
I replaced the stock-pickup with a spare EMG split-coil & pots I had in a drawer, and now this budget-beauty really sings! ;-)
Now let me repeat this: 88 EUR, shipping to France included!
I play Bass for more than 30 years, and spent considerable amounts for the majority of my instruments.
While I love them all dearly, and appreciiate each and every one of them for their qualities, I cannot help but be utterly gob-smacked by the value-for-money delivered in this case.
I owned instruments costing 10 times this price that were plagued by inexcusable quality control & manufacturing issues...or simply lousy design. It's amazing to see, that such a small price can get you an instrument, that is absolutely perfect for beginners, and - given the quality - well beyond that.
Highly recommended.
new standard for cheap basses?
where do I even start with this bass? I am genuinely shocked that it only cost me 88 euros.
finish:
literally flawless, not a single scratch or mark to be found anywhere.
the paint is evenly applied and great to the touch, especially the back of the neck.
sound:
this is my first bass so i wouldn't know much, but i i'm satisfied.
the ouput however is quite low which is why i rated 3 stars in sound
playability/tuning:
it holds tuning really well and is really comfortable to play.
it could use a small setup however as there is buzzing on some frets.
overall i am really satisfied and this is a huge improvement compared to my previous harley benton
Killerbass
Look at it. I fell for that gorgeous all black with tort guard.
For this price? Suprise me.
And meanwhile I sold another guitar, so I had money to spend and a Sandberg winking at me in my wishlist.
But I had already ordered this one. So I figured, I'll be critical.
Out she came. Stunning looks, not a single flaw, no gaps, no anything.
Gave her a quick soundcheck as I needed to go out.
Hmm. Sounds good feels good.
On return I checked it through more thorough. Intonation was dead on, action was already very good. Swapped the strings out for daddario's balanced tension rounds and gave the trussrod squatter turn and lowered the saddles even more.
She plays like a dream.
Sound was good.
Still I pulled a Di Marzio 122 pick from another bass and soldered it in.
She will now blow away anything up into very pricey regions with ease.
I dropped the whole Sandberg idea because of how it feels and now sounds
And even though the tuners are just good, a dab of grease on the worm and they are really smooth. Yet I ordered black chrome schallers and a gotoh bridge.
With those installed it will give any P bass a run for its money.
Why if it's good? Cos with those on it is a premium instrument.
It is that good it just deserves those upgrades. Even when they are do not needed.
That Sandberg has a basswood body too.
By the way, that amaranth or what they call it? It is a treated maple.
So maple neck, maple fretboard.
The satin finish feels and looks deliciously good. I mean, it's all black.
I really fell in love with this bargain bass.
Get one. It sounds fine. Those Chinese strings you best replace and with that Di-Marzio pup, another 80 Bob and a spot if grease you have an insanely good P bass.
But even with the pup it comes with it is just a lovely bass.
Did I mention the looks?
Pros:
Price.
Looks.
Plays very good.
Decent hardware.
Cons:
Strings, but hey, less then a 100.
Paint does scratch easy.
