Korg Modwave 5-stars Reviews
Wave Hello
I have an MPC keys 61, (highly reccomended) as I venture more into a DAWless world. But I was missing something. Enter the Korg Modwave. It's perfect. A sourse of endless sampling material and very organic in its sonic character.
I've never really heard a synth quite like it apart from perhaps the Waldorf Iridium, but the price difference is significant - yet the sonic possibilities similar in many ways. My only tiny gripe is the size of the display, but that is easily overcome with the available editing software available free on the Korg website.
I have only just taken delivery - so I can not comment on the ease of programming; for now I am full to the brim just enjoying the 200 preset sounds, designed by some stellar synth names. And with one or two tweaks you can alter those sounds to make them yours.
The build is good and functional. However, I fully inderstand that the lightweight construction and keybed may not please all, but for the outlay $ it's more than adequate and pleasing. It will not survive armageddon, but neither will you, so why worry. :)
So, within half an hour I had it hooked up via MIDI and audio to my MPC and it just sits so sonically perfect in the mix, bringing a new dimension. I guess this would apply to pretty much any other rig you have. Nice one that you can sample your own waves - I think it will be some time until I feel the need to, but it makes it an 'expandable' synth in the future.
The FX are great and shine with quality. Korg did us all a favour with this little beast. It's DEEP. So get lost!
Incedibly powerful, yet approachable synth!
Before I've bought this synth, I was afraid that I'm going to deal with menu diving, option paralysis and harsh digital sound...
Although this synth is extremely powerful with tons of wave shaping and insane modulation possibilities, it is surprisingly approachable. Most frequently tweaked parameters have their own dedicated knobs which makes sound design very enjoyable and whole experience feels like playing a proper instrument.
I've heard people calling this synth too harsh or digital... This is simply not true, I don't think they've spent enough time with it.
Sound-wise I really think this synth can compete with other more expensive wavetable synths. Korg really made an incredible job! Of course, to be able to offer this monster at this price range, Korg have cut corners.
The synth ships with just quickstart guide and no full manual. You can find the full manual on Korgs Website.
No USB cable included, I actually find this good, I have tons of them lying around anyway...
I think overall build quality is good (it feels light but, so what?), knobs are not wiggly, buttons feel good, but key bed is definitely not worthy of such a good synth! It is a shame really, but at least keys are full size.
I'm really surprised how little attention this synth gets. It is an incredible instrument to sculpt the sound you have in your mind. I honestly find it much more inspiring than my Minilogue XD.
