Magic on a P bass

I was looking for a darker, Motown style thump for my Precision bass, this fits exactly what I was after! Additionally, using a plectrum with a bit of drive has become one of my favourite bass sounds. Looking forward to hearing how they sound in a few years.

Expensive but good

If you're looking for flatwounds these are my favorite ones, although they're expensive, for me they have the best finish, and sound.

Nice (albeit expensive) flatwounds

In my hunt for the perfect flatwound I've tried these La Bella's, Fender 9050s and D'Addario Chromes.

Overall there's not much to choose between the three - the biggest change is the jump from roundwound to flatwound (where I have a strong preference for the smooth, effortless slides flatwounds offer). The La Bella's are noticeably "stiffer" in that there's less tendency for them to dip between the frets (I guess this is some combination of requiring higher tension and perhaps the string construction just being a bit more rigid).

On balance I suspect I'll stick with the D'Addario Chromes in the long-run - tonally I've a slight preference for them (and they're also a bit cheaper)! But the La Bella's are a very close second.
