Moog DFAM 5-stars Reviews
Drummer from another mother
I can play only on DFAM for days. You can get really interesting sounds. Lot od fun.
Best sound
Best sound in the market for this synth. From plucky percussion sounds to ambient glitchy things. Good for understanding the modular synthesis.
My first Moog
Love it, sometimes run it through a Line 6 Helix stomp = endless fun
Lack of midi could be a deal breaker for some but if you got some spare cash there is always the MAFD
Moog can surprise only positively!
This device is a masterpiece!
The variety of possibilities allows you to make some common sounds from bass, kick and snare (according to included template!) to experimental or drone.
Highly recommend if you are looking for a device which unlocks your creativity!
Great like really great but is a learning curve
It’s a fantastic synth and very different to all other products on the market. Not really a drum machine, not really a synth but a strange and very cool mix of the two
Great but takes a lot of patience and time
If you're a synth freak and have all the "modular" knowledge, this is a real treat. I am in the category of the "lazy people who don't read manuals" so I never took the time to fully understand how the DFAM works. Regardless, it's great fun and can create amazing percussions and loops with an Industrial feel.
This is definitely not for everyone, but it's great fun and can get you hooked for hours. Now the only thing missing is a Subharmonicon to link this with alongside my Grandmother.
pure sound quality!!
pros
Endless choises in groove patterns. As long as you start patching you can create all sorts of nasty sounds.
Cons
Tempo adjustment is very very sensitive.
No midi out.
So in order to let my daw know the exact bpm of the groove,i find manually the bpm by tapping the beat on an online metronome.
Not so easy but at least it works for me
Top quality, cant go bad with Moog, but beware! 8 step sequencer, never integrated into Eurorack system but can be done easily but wont work properly if you use for example SQ-1 to play off beat notes so be aware of that before buying. Otherwise almost unlimited sampling potential, perfect sound, solid build.
The best drum machine on the market
Very best in my opinion, simply love using this, have a had it for awhile now planning on purchasing a second one. Never had any issues with this machine. Honestly such a great machine. Plus it can be used for much more other than a drum machine. This synth rewards experimentation!
Highly recommended 5 stars all day.
The Instant Gratification Beat Maker
I am a keyboard player with a background in metal, experimental and drone music. Sound quality and personality is the thing I care the most about. I have no previous experience with modular.
The DFAM will not allow you to create complex and nuanced beats: the eight step sequencer means that you'll get two bars worth of drum rhythm, so bear that in mind. However, in my experience, once I find a nice sound (which is all the time, both by accident and by design) those 8 percussion hits end up being be so full of character, versatility, punch, and delicious moog-y fatness that I find myself jamming for several minutes before I ever consider twisting a knob in search for a new beat.
Plug this thing to a delay pedal or VST (warning, you must have a Control Voltage converter) and you'll find yourself swimming in an ocean of infinite drum kicks and polyrhythmic white noise.
If you, like me, enjoy sound design and have an aversion to navigating menus (finding some sort of visceral pleasure in the tactile act of tweaking frequencies by twisting knobs): this thing is for you.
it does whats supposed to do
Source of inspiration
After several months with it I have to say it's incredibly inspirational. The sound space is great and easily extendable with external modules, from percussive souds to acidy vibes. The sequencer knobs are not the easiest to tune to exact notes but that helps to arrive to this happy accidents and gives an extra flavor to any track.
Only annoying thing is lack of power switch in the original box but that can be solved by moving it to other eurorack case.
Above all it sounds like moog, feels high quality and it's fun to use.
Pitch and Velocity nobs too small and are not associated with Moog build/design quality.
Great Sounds
Sequencer is nice and straightforward and the sounds you can get are out of this world. I've been using mine to mostly record loops into my computer. Pairs up well with other modular and semi modular gear. Recommended.
Little Monster
Do I have to say more?
It is a little monster that can sleep under some plucky melodies and then destroy the world with the richest sounds!
Looks beautiful, sounds fantastic - that's a classy one beast, in a pure moogish fashion with a broad timbre spectre spreading from earth-shaking basses to psychodelic percussions.
Not really a drum machine but a lot more - even without patching you can get pretty interesting results with a synth structure like that - that's not a set of envelopes and oscillators you're used to, but it has very intuitive and hands-on interface though.
The one thing is missing for me is LFO but that can be easily patched into from some other module. Also the lack of MIDI synchronisation is the other con - CV sync is quite tricky in non-modular setup.
All in all it's a great little synth with it's own character and perfect build quality.
what can i say?
Simply magic!
The obvious limitations makes you go further, to be creative.
The most fun and one of the most powerfull machines in my last 20 years , side by side with my Sub37.
about the sound : its moog. nothing more to say.
awesome gear
It can boost rythmic patterns or be tha basis of new ones or even used as a dual oscillator synth! its a beast!!!
Just awesome!
The DFAM is a great source of inspiration, sounds great & simply makes fun!
It's a perfect addition to my setup.
And I guess it's going to be even more effective in combination with the M32, for example in the matter of synchronisation.
Minimal in the right way
Negative thing first - no sequencer start reset.
Other than that its a very good combination of controllable parameters via cv inputs, normalized connections, soundquality and true analog sequencer.
Best thing is that the DFAM is very versatile and can be used as a dual oscillator synth and not just a drum generator. You can make creative patches without external modules, but with another sequencer and utility modules like a quantizer, it is a super sweet addition to any system.
Value is very high, especially if you have the rack space.
Oscillator range is very wide but don't expect LFO frequencies. The tuning knobs are very sensitive so it is a bit challenging if you are using this for melodic content at a live show - however they are extremely stable.
