MXL 990 Reviews
Love it
Cheap and simple but excellent value for money and handles bass frequencies really well
Excellent microphone
The mxl 990 has incredible build quality, all metal build, Shock mount & hard case comes included which you wont see in other mics at this price point. Very warm & rich tone and in my own personal opinion it is much better than all condenser microphones at this price point. My only grudge about this microphone is that it isn't the best when it comes to recording guitar amps but certainly not the worst. Overall fantastic microphone for home studios highly recommend
Extremely happy with the mic
Very good quality for such a price. Hasn't been tested with acoustic guitar but the mic suits my vocal very well. Probably, I miss only one feature - low cut filter.
I love this thing.
In my opinion this is one of the very best microphones I've encountered in my life so far. I used to work at a recording studio too, and it never failed to deliver amazing, natural, raw recordings. The closer to reality your recordings are, the better.
so, pros:
- good size, although i don't think that's very important.
- pretty looking, although, also, not very important.
- natural, raw, realistic, excellent quality sound.
-comes with a very sturdy and resistant looking (haven't tested how resistant it is and hope i never find out, haha) case to transport it or keep it safe and sound at home.
cons:
-mmm, i don't think i can think of anything.
mxl990
Nice mike for less money. Good heavy metal feel of the mike, sounds clear. I dont have plans to upgrade it in the future. THe mxl990 is doing the job.
Good sound for the price
You might need a soundproof around it but it's great sound for the price
Good quality, good value
I would recommend this microphone to anyone wanting reasonable quality at a low price. I am using it for a live Youtube chat show and it works well with good sound and small size which makes it less obtrusive for tv work than most others. There is one downside. (Very) low noise is detectable but most definitely not enough to reject this microphone. Ours competes well with the Neumann u87 and Rode 1000 in the show! We haven't used it on music yet. They say you get what you pay for but I'd say you get a bit more quality than you would normally expect for this price.
Good microphone But a loose part inside
Received the microphone with a part inside that was loose, not a hard thing to fix, just a screw that was loose on the copper part
A nice mic for the price
This one actualy sounds ok. An open sound. Not so smooth as a high end tube mic, but certainly usable. Better sounding then those old Rode NT1's when they first came out.
good for this price
I bouhght this mic for mobile recording projects. I use wa87 normally in my studio. I can say that mic is very surprising for its price. Flat response, not too harsh/high boost. It gives very natural results on my instrument or vocal recordings. I recommend for it for beginner and mobile workers.
Do you hear me crystal clear.?
Before i had bought this product, I had read a few reviews and they all came back reasonably positive, But after receiving the product, I was amazed by its sound and build, this mic really is a cut above the rest for its price. It is really powerful on vocals, and on acoustic guitars it really brings out the tone, without even using any Eq, I will most certainly be investing in another two or three of these, They are amazing period.
Quality far beyond it's cost
I bought this microphone off the back of Recording Unhinged by Sylvia Massey.
Ruddy phenomenal.
I wasn't expecting much given the price but honestly this microphone out performed a decent handful of mic's we used in a vocal mic shoot out.
Decent rugged construction, though doesn't look amazingly fancy.
Worth purchasing even if it's just for a back up vocal mic!
Allrounder
I purchased it a few years ago as it was mentioned on several forums as a good platform for tweaking and customizing. Well I ended up actually using it "as is", maybe now I will finally have some free time to do the tweaks.
Using "as is" means putting it on men's vocals in front of a gospel choir on a quite loud stage. The included shock mount provided good noise isolation and I could get a decent beefy men's voice to the PA without much disturbance from drums and other instruments. I put it about 80cm-1m from the faces of the singers.
I also used it on some home demo recordings with quite usable results.
Anyway, I am not shy to use it here and there on different types of setups. Knowing it is quite cheap, I don't have to be too careful and can allow myself to experiment.
To finalize, I would say it is a good value for the price.
Perfect sound
It is an excellent microphone, very good for those who want a clean sound, good sound quality and very good for a studio. I use it daily and it never disappoints me. I like it a lot because it has good handling.
For my home studio,Very good.
for this money it definitely worth it.
Almost proffessional sound
Best cheap mic
Warm character and good choice for thin vocals.
A very good buy
This is an excellent microphone for its price.
This is currently used in a radio studio for recording voice tracks. When connected up to compressor etc it does sound much better.
The mic does give a very warm sound, which works very well with vocals and spoken word.
For the rather cheap price, it comes with a decent shock mount and a solid mount. The shock mount makes a world of difference, and allows us to move the mic around on its boom without the listeners hearing anything.
If you're looking for a good microphone that comes with good accessories, then this is the one for you.
Good Home Studio Microphone
I bought this microphone as I wanted a large diaphragm microphone for my home studio and I have seen good reviews on this one.
Sound wise this microphone performs very well - for the money. I stress, I think there is not a better microphone of this type on the market for the money; although there are better microphones you just have to pay a whole lot more.
I have used for vocals, percussion and acoustic guitar recording and all seem true recordings.
The small locking nut that holds the housing at an angle has a tendency to slip however if you are using as a static vocal microphone then this should not be too much of a problem.
Overall I quite like this microphone for sound and quality, so for budget home studio this is a good buy, for professional studios you may want to spend a bit more.
MXL 990
A good looking product. Well packaged in a plastic hard case, with firm foam padding holding the unit in place and with support cradles all fitted into the box. For a low cost microphone it performs well. I am using it for home studio work, as a vocals microphone, for traditional music. The audio clarity is good with no apparent colouring, and sensitivity was good. In a session the pick up off the rear of the cardiod was a little higher than I would have liked in an open studio, but did not present a problem in practice. This would not be an issue in a vocals box. Excellent value for money for those not having a large budget and I would not hesitate to reccomend it.
Clean clear sound
I've taken a bit of time to get used to this microphone before making any comments. Good for the price? Yes. I'd say that it is better than a most of the other mic's I have bought. It is certainly my favourite for voice overs. It produces a clean clear sound. Good rejection from the sides and rear and sensitive enough to give good vocal reproduction even when I am four to six feet from the Mic. The style is deliciously retro and the build quality seems solid, I like it a lot.
