Remo 14" CS Coated Black Dot Snare Reviews
The head for every snare
I absolutely love the controlled sound head and use it on almost all of my snares, from a 14"x6.5" Supraphonic (aluminium) to a 13"x6" Mapex (walnut) to a 14"x5.5" Premier (birch) to a 14"x6.5" WorldMax (brass).
I find that for about 80% of snare drums it's in the sweet spot between lively and dead. Not as bright and ringy as an ambassador or G1 can be, but not too dead like a pinstripe or emperor can be either. The CS also gives you a really fat sound when you play in the centre of the head — perfect for rock and pop live and in the studio. Since it's still single ply at the edges you can get the press roll feeling and ghost notes that are missing from a 2-ply head, and the "reggae rimshot" sound is still there too.
The only downside of the Controlled Sound is that the centre dot feels a little less 'bouncy' than the single-ply edges, and this means the rebound isn't consistent all over the head. I find I get used to it quite quickly, but it's worth bearing in mind if you're playing very soft music or like a highly responsive feel, or you're used to a G1/Ambassador.
But don't let that discourage you — the Controlled Sound is so good that it's now the head I try first on a new drum. Most of the time, it's all I need.
One of the best sounding snare drumheads ever !
The Remo 14" Coated Black Dot Snare in my opinion is one of the best sounding snare drumheads ever !
I play metal and I have my drumkit all miked up in my headphones and I can tell, so far, it has the best sound from all the drumheads I ever tried.
Pro : very compressed kind of a beat, right in your face, exactly what you need for this kind of music.
Cons : not the most enduring drumhead.
It's not for my likings. But most people find it the best! Just not for me!
Very good, it's good work.
Remo controlled sound
Previously I used Ambassador coated head on my snares. Now I decide to try something else. This head is aweeesome for steel snares. Steel snares are pretty loud and has few overtones, so this head is perfect for them. Dot in the middle works perfectly. In my opinion, maybe the best snare head ever!
Best snare drumhead!!
Ive been buying many drumheads and this become my new fav drumhead:D has such great attack, a warmy tone, can be jazzy blues too
Has a mix of everything which is greatt!
And ofc the price is unbeatable
Highly recommended!
One of the best all-round snare heads
The CS coated snare head has to be one of the most versatile on the market. It can handle all kinds of tunings and the centre dot removes just enough overtone while still allowing some natural 'ring' and makes the head really durable.
I have been gigging the same drumhead for about 6 months now and there is still life left in the old dog yet!
I'd recommend this drum head for anyone looking for a durable, workhorse drum head, especially new drummers who are looking to change a stock snare drum head to get a better sound. This is a no brainer!
That, what I looked for
Sounds great, without redundant overtones, tunes easy. Very good quality drumhead.
Favourite Drumhead
I love the phat sound I can achieve from these heads.
Using them on a Pearl 14"x05" Free Floating Brass Snare.
Remo controlled sound!
Buy this head and you don?t need to stick tape and moongel on your snare drum.
For me it?s the perfect snare head for rock funk etc.. as with all remo heads they are made to last!!
Love this head
It's just amazing. Sound is excellent and the quality (as you'd expect from Remo) is awesome.
Really helps to keep my shots in the centre of the head too.
Will probably upgrade to the next level of this when I'm replacing but it's a great snare head.
sounds like ambassador to me, but much more durable.
the dot eliminates some overtones too, making the use of moongel and other dampening stuff unnecessary
REALLY GOOD
This snare coated drum head is really good. The coating doesn't go off while playing, the sound is amazing (i'm using it with sound dumpers). I would recommend it to everyone who does not have a money for really expensive snare drum heads because this is one of the best for the price.
Great for heavy snare hitters
I often switch between this and some heavier two-ply snare drumhead. This is classic, open ringing but controlled powerful sound. Using it on Ludwig Supraphonic. Whatever you tune it, sounds great. I tune it quite tight to get that Chad Smith sound.
Great sounding head, lasted a long time!
Great head for getting a thick sound from your snare! Worked great on my Black Panther 14x6.5 to give a chunky sound!
Remo, you've done it again!
MUST BUY!!!
great for any snare and type of music
the only choice
these heads are head and shoulders above the rest. If you use remo heads, then this is the snare head for you. plenty of attack and highly responsive
Perfect for any ringing snare
I have a lot of trouble with snare heads. They either last for ages but sound bad, or sound good and last for about 2 shows. This is not a problem I had using this head. The central region of this snare is thickened to reduce any ring and provide additional bite, and while even with great deal of tuning it still had a bit of ring (not a bad thing, i'm using a metal snare, it's to be expected) it had more bite than i expected. It sounded studio-ready in seconds. I suggest using these on any deep-sounding drum you have, because they're easy to get a good sound out of and add punch, clarity, and cut to anything you put them on.
warm
love remo. great durable skin, if you like to hit a little harder, and get a warm, slight deader warmer sound out of your drum these are perfect. i have these on a few of my snares a tall times. great to detune and have a nice fat back beat. and these will last you longer than an ambassdor.
Best Snare Head I've Ever Used
This is without a doubt the best snare batter head I've ever used. Without any damping it has a clear tone with a crisp and focused attack. I've been using this on my 14×5.5 for two years now and I have no intention of switching.
The only thing I would say is that at very low tunings the coating wears off relatively quickly compared to higher tunings.
