The sound you want

No more 57, this will be your go to for guitar amps. Not sure all which it can be used for. Had a nice appearance, it matters. Nice timbre. Friend is accomplished player and I mic'd him up through the PA for a test. We tried every mic in my case and this was his favorite. The PRA IMO projects the midrange you're likely seeking without too much crispness.

Superlux PRA 628

Great piece of kit for guitar amps, good value for money, its not top of the range but the response is very good and sits much better than a normal mic.

Good clear sound

Clear sound I use it to mic the back of my guitar cabinet and I reverse the phase of it. It gives me a huge amount of low-end.

Classic sounding amp mic

This is a very respectable sounding guitar amp mic for many situations, with a design that is extremely practical for hanging over the front of the amp. It also includes what could be a useful clamp, although that doesn?t get any use in our case.

I also own the PRA 638 condenser version (requires phantom power). This has more high frequency detail and a more ?open? sound than most people are used to using in this role (sounds more like a studio condenser), whereas the PRA 628 MkII I am reviewing here is closer to the dynamic mics often used is this role. Brighter mics like condensers can lead to a more ?fizzy? guitar sound (messy treble) sometimes. This mic generally won?t unless the sound really is ?fizzy? to begin with!

It will depend on the amp being mic?ed and the sound being aimed for as to which style of mic would be deemed to be more appropriate. This is what I would feel is a very safe bet indeed for most users at a very affordable price.

amp mike

want a mike for your guitar amp? a good one? better then an sm57 ?

do not believe it?? buy one and you will see (hear) for some things an sm57 is not replacable but for miking guitar amps, wel there is, like there is the 628MKII.

as good as the sennheiser version? i think it is. love it, use it whenever i can!!

Bought 2 should have bought 3

Bought 2x Superlux PRA 628 MkII to mic up a Vox AC30 and a Fender The Twin, I also bought a Sennheiser E609 and the idea was to test the PRA628s against the E609, there was so little difference in the sound picked up from the amps regardless of which mic was used. The E609 did capture a little more midrange but other than that there was little difference and certainly not a big enough difference to justify paying almost 3x as much for the E609.

There may well be a difference in the longevity of the mics and I cannot testify to that at this stage, but I would rather have two PRA628 MkIIs than one E609.

Good quality materials, thicker then E906 and bigger then you expected. The clamp is almost useless if you need speed in live situations. I purchased a AT8665 instead.

Awesome guitaramp mic!

What can i say... it's just great... sounds very nice.. almost like a sm57. You won't be disappointed if you like the sound of a sm57 with this mic.

And i also noticed that it doesn't feedback that fast. I oncs used it in a gig where the monitors where pretty close and my amp had to work a low volumes so the mic was set pretty loud.... worked great!

The only little con is... the clamp which comes free with the mic is kinda crappy quality...but who needs them right? ;) just hang the mic over the amp in front of the speaker and go!

Bargain sound quality

I'm really quite surprised at how good the PRA 628 MKII is when comparing it to the much more expensive Sennheiser e906. Nice clarity & not too muddy for bassier tones.

I've used this in the studio on a number of occasions and once live and I'm thoroughly impressed.

The build quality seems nice and solid and I haven't had any troubles with wiring etc yet.

This a very nice, low cost solution for a tidy guitar cab mic. Highly recommended at such a good price.

Great Value for a Great Sounding Mic

Use this on guitar. Always sounds great.

Can't fault this mic. Convenient & durable with a brilliant tone.

Used mine alternatively with a Sennheiser 904 and nobody has spotted the difference. Says it all really. I'm not saying it's in the same league when ab'd but at a fraction of the price, it's a great alternative or backup.

Cool no stand required

Just plugged in and went live, seems great. I've not done sound tests or comparisons. So nice to play my amp live instead of diing into PA. Can't go wrong at the price. The clip on holder has limitations depending on your amp, I just hang it from the handle in front of the speaker.

Cheap and cheerful.

Superlux have this great ability to give you a cheap product that blow your expectations. This mic is built well, metal mesh and metal body, it feels well protected. The sound is phenomenal for the price of it. Clean, clear, no nasty noises or hiss. The only problem I have with it, is that I would have loved a case for it.

Mic is very versatile. Shape is great and it look cool in front of the amp. The little clap that comes with it is a nice touch and comes in handy. Cheap mic and works really well. I would maybe recommend a more expensive mic for studio recording but that's just because of a certain tone I like. Perfect little mic tho works well and seems reliable and well built . Recommed totally for this price very cheap

Great Value Microphone

I bought this microphone for recording purposes and also for miking my cab at gigs etc. during which it has performed with aplomb considering how much it costs.

I found it very balanced and neutral which gave the amp/cabs I used a chance to shine through without coloured like some mics can. It never got overpowered or distorted either. It's made as well as any of the Shure SM lines I've used, and is a solid item which is still looking great and performing well after a few years of use. Within its price range you'll find it hard to beat, and it also rivals some of the more pricey competitors.

A tremendous microphone and a bargain to boot, especially handy is the little bag the mic comes in and the clip to attach it to your cab or other things is also extremely useful. Its an absolute bargain!

Great alternative for Sennheiser

Great sounding microphone, the price is very nice, and it has a really great mic holder which I personally use on my combo handle, and it serve me well. However, once I missed i screw, as its loosen just from the vibration of a combo.

Great bang for your buck

I'm not a professional audio engineer and I'm not using it for professional recording, but for home and usage with a band or live, it seems great to me, for both, quality of audio and materials that looks good and seems rock solid.

The clip for holding it on the cab is really usefull and an appreciate bundle of this mic.

I can't say if its working range is the best, but from clean guitar tones, to really high gains, this mic seems to work perfectly.

It does not come with an XLR cable, and the only attention you need with this product is when you choose it (the cable I mean). This because the clip support that comes in the box, has a way to grab the mic, and a diameter not suitable with any cable. So as soon as you get your hand on the mic holder, you should measure that diameter, and then look for a right xlr cable, nothing weird, is still a standard diameter, but in my personal experience on 4 cables I already had at home, only one was right for this mic.

Last mention to the bag that comes in the box, that looks really of a good material and not a cheap one
