Suitable return for the pricepoint

Without a major background with mandolins and having played my first one only 6 months prior, I was still pleased by the sound produced by the thing. Like others have said the build quality is a bit lightweight, but tonally it's satisfying, especially considering the price. New strings and a setup would go a long way as well!

Good enough

The Thomann Octave Mandolin 1087A-P is an affordable instrument that serves as a great starting point for those interested in learning to play the octave mandolin. While it may not be a high-quality instrument, it is certainly good enough to get you started and allow you to determine whether you enjoy playing this type of instrument.

One issue with the instrument is that the nut is cut too low, which means that using a strap under the strings is not possible. Additionally, the action is quite high, although it is possible to sand down the saddle if necessary. At fret 12, the saddle is around 8mm high and not adjustable.

The finish on the body of the octave mandolin is nice, but the neck is not of the same quality. After only a week of playing, you may notice that the finish on the edge of the fretboard is rubbing away. It is important to note that some frets are not glued in at all, although there are no fret sprouts through the sides.

Despite these issues, the electronics of the instrument are surprisingly good. While this may not be the ideal instrument for someone looking to pursue a folk career, it is a great option for those who have always been interested in playing the octave mandolin and want to give it a try.
