AKG P170 Reviews
Love it
This was a rush-replacement fo one of my C390B Mics that broke. Primary use is on HiHat and it's been on many shows with me on tour. Happy I got it.
Great instrument mic
I'm using this mic primarily to record didgeridoo, which is why I don't mind its tendency to pick up a lot of low-end frequencies. That said, I've done some other recordings with it and they sounded very clean as well.
Overall, it's a very solidly-built mic that is meant to be used in close proximity to an instrument. This is something that is really nice in my case, since it won't pick up any breath sounds and does not need to be used in a perfectly sound-treated environment. It has a great response for objects that are near to the mic, and nothing else.
Getting One Everytime I Lose One
There is something about the 4k - 10k response that make it great with male vocals with the right pop filter
For hats
That’s why I got it. Affordable quick easy decent hat mic. I’m going to also use it as an experiment mic on a second acoustic position.
You get what you pay for.
This mic is handy to have, works in live situation for loud sources like overheads, but I would never use it in studio. It has a lot of noise.
Simple, straightforward, good
Used it for acoustic guitar.
- could use a bit more dynamic, may sound a bit `flat`
- lack of features (just a -20dB pad)
- slightly `bleedy`, could isolate better
+ transparent, balanced sound, not tinny like the cheap Behringers
+ very good build quality
Above expectations
Only 4 stars for features since it is fixed pattern, obviously. Other than that, I just ordered a second one to use as stereo pair. It’s the “sm57” version of the km184’s.

Best condenser microphone out there for the price! Wanted to try out cheaper condenser microphones to mic my overheads at home! It definitely has a little bit low rumble but learn to use it and there is no explanation for not doing good recordings with this! Insanen!
Great for the price
For the price there decent little overhead mics, great if your like me and just need mics that as decent but not overly expensive
Cheap and good condenser mic
I am using this for choirs, drums OH/hi-hat. Good sound for the price.
A must have!
I've used it to record several acoustic instruments (mandolin, baglamas, guitar, bouzouki) with very good results. It works fine also as overhead on drums and percusison. Grab a couple of them, they are very useful!
AKG P170
Solidly build mike, but too heavy response on the bottom end, you need to use low-cut in way too many situations.
Sounds good, but be careful of buzz
The hi-lo gain switch on the side of the mic allows a path for buzz to get past the shielding. Take care if the mic's hand held.
Best price/value condenser small diaphragm mic
I am using a pair for stereo recordings. Great sound. Great quality, no interference (all metal body).
Awesome product for the price
I have used these for live performance as overhead mics and as instrument mic for recorder. Good sound and quality. Easily controllable with Midas Pro preamp. I really like this mic.
Great for the price
I got a pair of these for stereo classical guitar recording and they work surprisingly well.
Well-defined sound for a fair price
That's an excellent microphone. I found it very good for recording steel strings guitar. You can have a beautiful and well-defined sound at a fair price.
excellent surprise
Well... it's cheap but it delivers!!! I was surprised when I connect it to preamp and my colleague played on acoustic guitar. Well defined tone, not bright I would say, on my opinion doesn't add "to much" color to the sound. Well built, looks sturdy, awesome price. Definetly gonna buy second one...
Great mic
Very good value for money. Necessary when recording drums or acoustic guitar. It is accurate and has a realistic sound. I use it in my home studio.
Great for snaredrum?!
Yes. I use min on a snaredrum (with -20db pad on). It works like a charm. I prefer SDC mics on a snare over a dynamic. The SDC catches more clarity and detail. With the pad it fits perfect for its application!
Above all, this is great for use of acoustic instruments aswel.
