Behringer S16 Reviews
S16
Great
Love It
Solid construction, quality unit. A very economical way to up your channel count to 32 inputs with no loss in signal quality. Worked first time when connected to my X32 Rack and I really like the fact that you can lock the front panel controls from the X32. Now I can pick up 16 channels from each side of the stage, very handy indeed.
2YR Review on Behringer S16
I didn't review this product when I bought it because it was a box with connectors on it, and I didn't really warrant a review. However, it's now been two years and I've seen a few people who didn't really appreciate what the thing can do - now it's done a lot of miles, I will comment.
First thing, is that I installed it in a rack and it has been in and out of a van, in the summer heat and the winter's cold and damp - no issues whatsoever.
It did (I thought) fail once - but this was simply an idiot dropped the end of the CAT5 cable in the mud at a festival, and when I plugged it in to the S16, the mud prevented proper contact. A quick spray and clean and normal service restored.
What I have found useful is the ability to listen to the inputs on headphones via the turn and select knob - very, very handy and prevents the need to shout to the person out front. I'm also using the P16 personal monitor outputs and these all work very reliably.
What would I do to improve it? Simply add a little more space for a bit of tape for channel labels - there's not a lot of space between the rows. I also would have put the CAT5 connectors on the front too - but I guess the back is fine really.
I can 100% recommend it.
Brilliant item ! Top class flawless working!
This is a brilliant item, amazing at this price! It works seamlessly with the x32 desk amazing being able to use the CAT5 instead of the big old analogue multi. I cant advise anyone more to have a try of this product.
Great sound and featuers
We have a number of these both in our studio and out on the road.
The pre amps sound lovely, big warm and oozing that Midas sound.
The interface is intuitive and easy to get used to and we have never had a problem with drop outs or connectivity issues. The stand alone function is a real bonus, and the ability to monitor input channels via the front headphone jack and adjust gain and switch phantom on and off from the unit is great in an on stage festival situation.
the only gripe if any is that the front panel is labeled up 1-16 for the inputs and 1-8 for the outputs which is fine for the first unit in the chain, but it would be lovely if Behringer could supply some magnetic number strips for 17-32/9-16. We made some from an old magnetic year planner!
Very good and useful product.
I use it with Behringer X32. S16 is very good and useful. Removes the old heavy analog snakes and now I'm using 2 S16 with LAN cable.
S16
This unit to me is worth twice the money. No more heavy snake, GREAT !
Works straight out of the box. Need to use screened CAT5, I was using unscreened cable for the first few weeks and getting some dropouts but trouble free now that I changed to screened cable.
If you have an X32 this unit is a must, you'll never look back.
WORK GOOD PONY HORSE
Thing about this I can say only one thing - a compact and lightweight , which is especially important in portable touring trips. Set in advance a few points of reception and transmission of signals over twisted pair . Connectors strong enough , not loosened . Cascade connection at the level of interference was observed. Excellent!

Behringer S16
Buy 2, I did! Superb units, giving Midas pre-amp quality, 2nd to none! Clark Technic networking connectivity, so all that audio and midi signal connect via a tiny network cable (instead of a monster multicore), but also adding midi and ADAT too!
Ridiculous quality and convenience for such little money!
Very Impressed
Outstanding Value with excellent features. Steep learning curve from standard snake, but once you get you head around the ability to assign to any channels its a dream. You will wonder how you got by without one......
X32 essential partner for live usage
If you are upgrading an analog setup with multicore to the X32 then this is a must.
We have replaced a 40m 15/5 core which needed 2 people to move with a cat5 cable on small cable drum (AV110).
Setup and take down time has been reduced significantly as a result.
Very versatile product which can be used as a stand alone pair making a digital snake, or as preamp in a digital setup with the adat outputs on the rear.
Pure quality, oozes features
The first thing to note about the S16 is how solid it is. It doesn't feel flimsy at all, and feels like it will stand up to a fair bit of abuse. The dial is probably the only protrusion that could be accidentally snapped off, but it too is quite solid so I don't forsee this being an issue.
We're using this in conjunction with our X32 to run a CAT5 cable from the console at the back of the auditorium to the S16 at the front, where we then connect to 2 x 8/4 sub-snakes. The joy at replacing our old trunk cabling is immense, as we now run a single CAT5 cable from front to back. For our purposes, that alone is worth the money for this unit.
Setup was easy, and the X32 immediately recognised the S16 and we were able to set up our routing easily.
In terms of features, we mostly use the console to drive how we manage each channel, however it is useful to have the LEDs indicating when phantom power is applied to a channel for our stage crew. Many of the other features we haven't delved into yet, but we look forward to putting it through its paces.
Behringer S16 digital stage box
Six months ago, became the owner of the device.
Impressions of the C16 good preamps are great, build quality is good. The device has a lot of useful functions on the front panel, you can adjust the gain of the most mic preamps and phantom power, monitor the signal through the headphones.
Never again 200lbs copper multi cable!
Having bought two of these for use with my Behringer X32 mixer, I have permanently solved my biggest problems with signalling between stage and mixer, most often being the 200lbs, 50 foot long tangled maze of a multi cable that I have been struggling with up untill now. I have bought a couple of 2-unit Gator racks to put these stageboxes in, and so far it has proven a viable solution for my use (as long as no one steps on the Gator case). Combined with a couple of long ethernet cables, these two units have completely replaced the need for my old, heavy copper multi cable when on the move, e.g. using my X32 on live gigs. Since the S16s also use the same preamps as the X32, the sound produced is the same as if only using the analogue inputs on the mixer, which makes for several possible setups of preamps, both for studio recording and live sound engineering.
S16 - Digital stagebox
I recently took delivery of a x32 compact and the perfect compliment is the s16 digital stage box.
One of the biggest hates of any gig is running out and pulling in the multicore run to FOH. With the CAT5 being the only cable to run the pain is all but disappeared!
Get a cable on a reel and the breakdown time is shortened and the weight, space reduction is also an improvement over the heavier copper equivalent.
Audio quality is as good as the x32 itself as the pre-amps are identical and the added ADAT ports are a nice feature for recording.
Might have to get another to give me 32 channels!
Big time saver
There was a time that it took two people to unroll a multicore cable, and then sometimes an hour long picking cables with numbers, connecting them to appropriate channel in mixing console, then finding out some of tha channels are broken...
Well not anymore, here's the Behringer S16. You get a box with 16 ins with Midas designed preamps, and 8 outs. Need more? Connect another S16 in the first one for 32 ins and 16 outs.
Now you just take one CAT5 cable and connect it to your AES50 enabled mixer, and you're almost done :)
Make sure you use highest quality cables, because digital connections are much more delicate than analog.
Thank you Behringer !!
I have a small local rental company. By the use of 2 S16 and the X32 I can set up a stage in a few minutes. Before one year I had to carry a 50kgr analog snake and it was very difficult to install it , The S16 has worked perfect in any concert since the last year and makes my job so easier !!! The value for the money its very very good. Before the S16 relase it was impossible to have digital snake in a shuch a low price .
Behringer stage box
Excellent gadget ! makes set-up an easy and quick matter of time. No need to use a multi cable or even stage boxes on stage. Compact size for mobile applications
works well.. but..
Have two - works well, no issues and much better than dragging a big snake around. Only one small issue - one channel has now got an XLR body stuck, and it won't come out. It's a (mostly) fixed install, so it doesn't matter that much, but it's irritating in a new unit. It may of course be a duff XLR plug. but it's irritating. But don't be put off - this is an excellent unit, and I'm very pleased.
Buy it! it wont let you down
This is one of my favorite piece of equipment, it has save us a lot of time and all the features on it are really useful when working on concerts, trouble-shooting and transportation is great, is not heavy and when combine with the other behringer products like the P-16 and the X32 Mixer you will realise how useful the S16 is.
you need to read the manual though, some of the features are not as intituive as you think, the small display and the buttons can be a oain but it won't take you long to work them out.
