Electro Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff Fuzz Reviews
A very Huge Big Muff
The EHX Green Russian Big Muff is based on the original green Sovtek, which is similar to the Civil War model.
The sound is characteristic, and incredibly similar to the originals.
Huge sound, exceptional harmonics and a lot of headroom.
It doesn't need to be paired with other pedals, even if slight clean boost or transparent overdrive will bring out even more of its character.
Excellent pedal to recreate the sound of David Gilmour's Muff, especially that of the 90s (e.g. Live Pulse).
Sounds like a Russian Big Muff
I owned a Russian Big Muff in the 90s. I killed it. Despite appearances, they weren't very well made but I loved the sound of it and have been searching for that distortion/fuzz ever since.
My search has ended with this little reissue. It sounds like I remember my old unit sounding - huge, fat, nasty and fuzzy - not fizzy. This model seems much better constructed, too .
So far, I'm extremely happy.
fantastic fuzz
I use this in my studio and in live setup.
Very dirty fuzz (with lots of high-end crunch).
You can achieve very different effects, also depending on how much volume you enter on the pedal.
So, it is super versatile.
I used the Electro Harmonix Big Muff PI USA in the past, and both are great!
The mini size is ok, but the only little notice may be the spacing of the knobs: they are very close.
And ultimately: it is reasonably priced and of solid quality.
I definitely recommend this pedal
The Green Russian Big Muff is a Fantastic Bassy Fuzz Pedal
Ever since I started looking up fuzzes to add to my pedalboard, the big muff became a primary choice in that matter. After watching several videos and reading reviews online on the various bif muff reissues, I knew the green russian had to be my final choice.
The green russian is more bassy than the other big muff reissues - which fits nicely in my setup. It carries a lot of sustain, perfect for gilmourish lead sounds. Moreover, it is very easy to dial the tone and fuzz you want as it only has three knobs - if you dial just a notch on the sustain knob, you can get a more overdriven sound, but as you start to get the knob closer to the 9/10 o'clock mark, the fuzz sounds are quite notorious.
It is built nicely and its size is very adequate to fit every pedalboard. Personally, I pair the green russian with a tubescreamer and the sounds I get from those two pedals are fantastic. Definitely recommend the green russian big muff fuzz if you are a fan of the big muff sound and if you're looking for a fuzz with bassier tones.
Love it!
Had an original Russian Muff and this is a welcome, board friendly take. All the same sounds and textures that I remember, although it's low end can carry far in small venues and muddy the sound.
Perfect
I tried and used two other Muffs earlier and liked booth. However, the russian compared to a big muff pi sounds really more natural, musical and has more middle frequencies if I hear it right. It really-really plays huge with my 60's sounding strat and stands out in the mix for rythm playing better then the regular pi. Its creamy, psychedelic, not as metallic. The best fuzz I've used for now.
Great for bass growl
Very happy with this pedal for creating a very growly bass tone when needed.
My favourite muff
Using this Muff first in a chain of Muff-OD-Tremolo-Tape Delay-Tuner-Clean valve amp. Great for a lead or rhythm sound. A bit darker sounding than most other muffs I've had which is a great bonus. Less fizz and more fuzz!
For my set up I had to put it first in the chain as it buzzed and howled if placed anywhere else.
Sounds like my old Black Russian Muff
I am very happy with this version of the muff. It is aggressive and thick. I use it for bass and the low end loss is surprisingly minimal. Highly recommended.
The fuzz I wanted
I have to say that I'm not really a fan of traditional fuzz pedals. That's why I love EHX Green Russian big muff. It's not a traditional muddy fuzz pedal. It's more of a heavier overdrive pedal (at least to my ears). It's perfect for what I do (post-rock/post-metal).
Awesome pedal
I love this pedal. Get warm, thick and bassy tones or get awesome dirty/fizzy tones, this pedal does it all. It handles great, theres lots of different tones you can get when turning the knobs. Sound quality is very good, couldn't expect less from EHX. Build quality rocks, the hidden message on the back of the PCB is a really cool touch aswell, follow the smoke!
Very happy with this pedal, you should get one.
Metal Machine!!
It delivers a huge sound! Ive noticed that i use this pedal all the time, it has a trully amazing sound. The build quallity is awesome and the features are superb.
Russian Big Muff
I use it for my Fender Rhodes. It's range from mid to (very) low is very satisfying. There's enough transparency in the tone. Feels like a tank.
The Green russian !
Damn good pedal. Think Kyuss and Fu manchu and general stoner heaviness . Brilliant Fun altogether and damn loud.
Awesome Big Muff Sounds
After watching so many videos on all the different types of Big Muff, I opted to go with this Green Russian one. Among the new reissues of Big Muffs, this seems to be the best one in emulating vintage muff sounds. The sound is very powerful and bassy and it gives the feeling that the amp is going to explode! Loads of juicy sustain and harmonics. Awesome! The transient attack is rather slow and the bottom end flubby and fat like in most Muffs.
The amount of volume and gain you get can is ridiculous. Here one must be a bite careful because any small noise from power-supply or other pedals gets amplified a lot (I use mostly singe coils), but the pedal itself does not produce any noticeable noise. The tone control is really versatile with a wide range of tones and it produces some cool weird sounds at extreme settings. For the gilmourish violin-like sound, I stick a compressor or a compressed low-gain overdrive pedal in front of it. This pedal is very light but well built and the knobs and by-pass switch seem durable. I can only recommend it!
Good sound at great price
I found it had too much bass that I couldn't remove. I guess it is the nature of this pedal, I had to EQ the rest of my rig to accomodate this pedal, which was too much trouble. Couldn't use it so I sold it.
Way lower gain than a standard Big Muff and a much milder mid scoop make this a way more versatile fuzz sound. Absolutely incredible into a tube amp. I've used a lot of different Muffs, and this one is probably the most musical I've ever used.
Brilliant sounding fuzz
The best fuzz sound I've ever heard. Had a nano big muff before but didn't think much of it. This is much thicker sounding, has massive bass and less of a mid scoop than usual which I prefer, its perfect for power chords. Not the most versatile, changing the guitar volume going into it or the sustain on it doesn't clean it up much but thats not really what its for, it does one sound perfectly
My favorite fuzz
I had Big Muff Pi NYC and several other fuzzes, but this is the chosen one. I have Fender Highway One Telecaster and Fender '72 Tele Thinline Reissue and it works awesome on both of them.
Smooth sound, awesome pedal size (the original NYC is like 3-4 times bigger). Best fuzz on the market for my type of playing.
Old school muff sounds
Seems a top-notch pedal, controls are useful and generate nice variety of fuzz and muff sounds. Gets close to the OG, a little less volume and gain. Very useful for fuzzy rock/metal on guitar or bass.
