EV ZLX 12P Reviews
EV ZLX 12P
Have used a pair of these for over a year now and my overall opinion is very good. Not as powerful as the ELX series which must be down to the plastic case as I'm informed that the internal components are the same. Lots of input options with basic EQ and also a cross over facility if you're using them with Subs. Push them too hard and the limiter will kick in, but the compressed sound isn't too noticeable, and after all it's there to protect your drivers and amp. Handling is really good, nice and light, (I'm not a big bloke but I can easily carry one in each hand) and the handles are great. Everything feels nice and solid. I bought the EV covers which fit tightly and have kept the speakers looking good. Overall, at this price, these are a good buy and I would recommend them.
Great little speakers
I ordered some of these cables for discos and they are very good I have been using them for way over a year now and have had no troubble they have been chucked around and work perfectly. Just an all round great cable
Very good quality price
i tried these speakers during this year . the quality is great considering the price . in small clubs , outdoor ( when playing with a drums is better with a small subwoofer ) . internal dsp for: positions: monitor / hole / bracket ;eq ( bass treble -default eq : club / live / speech; low cut 80/100/120 Hz . Digital volume+ -10 db.Peak limiter . what we still need at this price ?
Awesome. Can I say any more.
After using these speakers since February, I have been impressed by them to the point at which I would probably never switch from EV to another brand again.
These speakers are packed with the highest-end features on a lower-mid price bracket speaker I personally have ever seen. The onboard DSP allows for so many options with subwoofers, mounting options and sound trimming I do away with an equalizer all together, but even the built in programs do a solid job at keeping good sound quality running all the way up to peak
Running these with my thebox 212 sub A (another highly recommended product) gave me sound that an audio engineer who usually runs top-of-the-line RCF and QSC products could not comprehend, quoting 'I can't even get that treble clarity on my £10,000 line array system'.
An amazing product on it's own for small-medium size venues, and with a sub, awesome for larger venues and events too!!
Multifunkcne reprobedne!!!
Velmi dobre hrajuce a ovladatelne aktivne reprobedne. Za tu cenu top!
Excellent Speaker
I use this as both a monitor for gigs and a pretty good "iPod dock". The DSP is brilliant as I like to EQ up the bottom end for a nice bassy sound, however when used as a monitor I still use the speaker on the standard setting as monitor seems a bit quiet and flat to my ear.
Haven't yet used this as a FoH speaker for a gig but we are now planning on getting another pair of ZLX 12Ps with some subs to replace our passive system. The speaker has an incredible output for its size and I haven't had it anywhere above 0 gain and +2dB, with the bass on +3 being huge for a 12" speaker.
Very impressed with the quality of this speaker and it's also a bit of a looker. One downside is that there seems to be a quiet hiss when the speaker is on and nothing is turned up, but this is inaudible when any sound comes through it and is barely audible in the first place.
Considering a pair of these costs less than one equivalent Yamaha DXR 12 then I cannot recommend the ZLX 12P enough, and the DSP is a huge bonus!
I love it
I love this speakers, cost benefit : very good. Light and powerfull, sound quality is ok. On board dsp is amazing. I think u like it. I use this model a practice studio and all musicians is very satisfiy for good results.
Lightweight
What can you say, they are light in weight and light in performance, I frequently clipped them playing outside to a point where I thought the woofer develloped a rattling sound. They generate a significant amount of heat which makes outdoor gigs during sunny days a no-no. I suppose the DSP settings on the back are suppose to be an attractive feature but I find it confusing, you test all the settings with different equalizer settings and before you know it you can't make up your mind which sounds better and you end up always messing with it specially when you're gigging and the acoustics of a room requires you to reconsider your settings my OCD with the sound settings tends to drive the other band members nuts. Anyway, I got burgled and they got stolen and I wasn't too upset about it. I should have bought the EV 300SX passive speakers, in fact I think I will
Great
Best bang for your buck on the market!
Great speaker for the money
I purchased one of these as my friend has one and we play in a two piece band together. They are nice and light, and have quite a few functions for adjusting the sound on the back. At high volumes the sound quality suffers a bit, and there is quite a loud hiss out of the speakers when powered on, but you don't notice that when playing. I still cant decide whether I prefer "music mode" or "Live mode" more. Neither are voicing the speaker the way i want it. Music is too boomy and scooped, and Live is lacking a bit of low end. Still, with tweaks to the graphic in the desk I have been able to get a decent sound for them. I ABed them with yamaha DXR12s and the Yamahas seem louder, deeper, cleaner. The yamahas are also more than twice the price and weigh 5 kilos more. For a keyboard player these would make ideal monitors. Not bad for a PA if you can find the right settings and you dont play too loud.
EV ZLX12P Review
I bought a pair of these for my church, where their main use is as powered monitors. The sound quality from them is very good. They are a massive improvement over the cheap floor wedges we had before. We have been using them for several months now, and they have been rock solid.
We have also used them as front of house speakers for an event outside the main church building. At 1000W they have plenty of power for smaller events, although I think you'd want a sub for using them for bigger events.
The ability to taylor the EQ dependent on application is good - especially the floor wedge preset that cuts the bass frequencies when used in this role.
The one minor flaw I'd raise is that the knob that is used for setting levels and navigating the menus can get knocked a bit easily. Some of the guys at church accidentally set the level to +10dB by accident which got rather loud!
Overall, for the price we paid, they are very good speakers.
Fantastic speakers
Use 2 of these for live vocals and guitar (through my Kemper) in a rock covers band.
Vocals are clear and the guitar punches through the mix. Plenty of headroom but I have tickled the limiter on the odd occasion!
Used with music these sound powerful - lots of tight bass and clear treble and mid.
Very good speaker for FOH
Very pleased with my pair of these. I've found them more than loud enough for almost any medium sized event.
Getting into larger rooms, I think a sub is required, but there's a simple crossover built into the DSP on the speaker, so it wouldn't require a ridiculous amount of effort.
I like the fact that you can floor mount as monitors or pole mount, and both situations sound great and are really sturdy.
Nice that you can use them just with an ipod or phone if you need some backing music in a pinch.
Very impress with the EV zlx 12p so far, very light for easy to carry around, sounds very good, the bass is above my expectations and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a budget Active PA speakers or Monitors
Great product
Very nice and pleasant sound for the money it is a great value!!!
The only thing I can complaint about is the shipping.
It would be better to mark the shipment as "fragile"
One of the speakers I got had a slight damage on the front.
active EV ZLX speakers
We tested several make and models and these were the best sounding for the money.
They are the first active speakers we have and we were cautious but have been convinced by their versatility and performance.
We would recommend these speakers for a wide variety of uses.
Total bargain on a budget
I purchased an EV ZLX 12P after researching on-line for budget options to power my Axe-FX II.
The speaker arrived promptly and very well packaged. Plenty of connection options available taking an either 1/8-inch auxiliary from an external stereo source like an ipod or similar device, 2 x XLR/TRS inputs, and 1 x XLR output allows you to send a balanced signal to and from the unit.
On-board is a well-designed LCD display for DSP that at first can feel a little complicated but is actually well thought out and a breeze to use in no time. Here you can make very precise EQ adjustments to the sound of the speaker. This is also where you can find some other very useful features such as input metering and complete mode changes to reflect how the speaker is being used (as a floor wedge or as a speaker on a pole or bracket) etc.
The sound is very crisp and clear, and can get seriously loud if needed. If offers 1000-W in a Class-D bi-amplified design with a frequency range of 50 Hz - 20 kHz.
With a super-durable composite construction these speakers are a total bargain for the price.
Amazing speaker for the price.
I am very impressed with these at this price bracket.
Very reasonable sound, well balanced for vocals and acoustic instruments.
I eq out a little top end but then I prefer a more natural sound.
Having two inputs that can handle non-phantom mics, jack inputs from guitars or keyboards and line level make them suitable for performers who need a very small footprint (such as a musician at a wedding ceremony). Keyboardist would benefit from the 15" version to handle the lower notes effectively in that situation.
Of course having a preamp and some eq/reverb ahead of the speaker inputs would always be better but not essential in this case.
Recently used these as the only amplification for an outdoor event (beer garden) they handled acoustic guitars and vocals very well up to the acoustic level of a hard hitting rock drummer. Also worked great for an electric guitarist who plugged his pedal board straight into my desk.
They emit quite a lot of sound through the sides which could be beneficial for any small groups who cannot afford monitors as they will hear quite a lot of themselves through the side of the speaker!
A good solid box!
I've only just unpacked my new Ev ZLX 12P and haven't really had time to road test it yet. On first impressions and without 'pushing' the level, the sound quality isn't the best I've heard (I also use a QSC K10 which sounds better) but for the price bracket it's a beast. Just be warned that as with any of these types of units, the louder you go the more the quality diminishes, oh and watch out for that 'Fletcher Munson Curve'.
All n' all, I'm very happy with it for DJing at small venues.
*Update... I pushed this unit at a party last weekend and it didn't really stand up (as I expected) Although this was at an open air event, under cover but not enough for much absorption. So I guess living in a country where most of my gigs are outside, perhaps next time I will be inclined to spend a bit more to get that bit of extra sound quality at high levels. I still maintain it's not at all bad for the money and for small parties or venues.
Very functional and sounds good for the price
You might read some critical reviews about this speaker on the web, but I'm not sure they're fair. I bought one of these speakers to try out as a wedge monitor / FOH speaker for smaller events and I plan to order several more based on first impressions.
The cabinet appears solid. I don't feel any flex in the cabinet - certainly not under normal handling. We tried the speaker out in a 80' venue and people came in from next door to find out what the noise was - this was trying to run it into the limit at 2o'clock in the afternoon though.
As a pair it should be capable of reasonable level for FOH duties, I would imagine especially if crossed over subs, and should be perfectly capable for monitor duties on most band stages.
This speaker isn't quite as compact as I'd pictured it, but that may just have been me being hopeful - I still plan to use more ZLX12Ps as I don't think any 10" would be able to keep up with this on FOH duties.
