The best option for small studio

What can I say - it's a brilliant product, engineer masterpiece. Everything just like it should be in a professional human-oriented monitoring system. Top-quality materials, very detailed sound, small weight, tight and clean bass response, which I never expect from small size monitors, but in this case - it is here! If you need a compact monitoring system without compromises in your mixing or music production routine - these monitors should be on your list for sure.

Awesome portable monitors for travelling sessions

These compact monitors are a must have if you're an travelling producer. They sound wide and pretty clear for their size. Don't expect to make any pro mixing on them, for a songwriting demo they're pretty good. Maybe if paired with a sub you could do something but i don't recommend them for that setup, just get proper monitors if you're after that.

The travelling bag is a MUST HAVE!!! They fit perfectly and protect them for scratches.

The backside pins for adjustments are impossible to reach without a toothpick or something similar, just keep that in mind.

They are great speakers overall, highly recommend them for mobile set-ups!

Great sounding small portable speakers!

I finally got around to buying a pair of these monitors after hesitating with the high price for a while.

I was specifically looking for a pair of monitors that are portable as I travel a lot and was tired of always being on headphones.

These fit the bill perfectly! One can get a very nice bag from Genelec, purpose made for a pair of these. I have a camera case for this purpose where my interface, mic and cables fit in as well so I don't need it but it is nice that Genelec have bags for their monitors. Not all manufacturers have so I think it's worth mentioning.

It's true they are the most expensive of the small speaker offerings but after testing and listening to quite a few of the alternatives it was clear that these Genelecs are well above the competition.

So what do you get?

You get a pair of speakers with an exceptional detail and stereo field. If you set these up correctly they will be very good for making panning decisions and for hearing reverb tails etc.

You don't get much bass but we knew that. Bass under say 70Hz you have to check elsewhere. But it is very good to check how kick and bass come through and sound in the upper low and lower mid frequency range.

The tilt switches on the back lets one adjust the response to the room and it has worked flawlessly in a variety of locations from rehearsal rooms to hotel rooms. The power lead and XLR connector are nicely tucked away at the back of the speaker.

Build quality is superb. As good as it gets.

They are very nice to listen to in general while composing, tracking or just listening to music or radio.

Very happy with these. Might consider the matching subwoofer at some point.

Nice sound

The first feeling is ultra-compact. The average person can hold it without pressure with one hand. The exact size given by the official is 19.5 x 12.1 x 11.6 cm (including the speaker base). But its weight is not too light - 1.5kg, still a very heavy glimpse in the hand.

The sound is straight and clean, the low frequency is beyond expectations. I didn't expect the 3-inch woofer to have such a large amount of energy. The IF high-frequency is also very clean, and there is no low-frequency cover over the high frequency.

Thanks to the class-D amplifier,Genelec 8010 offer a super dynamic response in such a small metal case.The sound is quite clear.Because of its 3" Woofer,it is ideal for vocal monitoring theoretically.Also you can use it in various situation.The sound is great,ultra clear even in complex music listening.The sound localization of 8010 is insanely accurate.Thanks to its DCW technique design.

Genelec 8010 is very suitable for desktop use.

8010a although the volume is small, but the sound quality is very good.The resolution is also very high, high frequency of 8010a is accurate and comfortable ,large medium frequency densityhe ,only small shortage is that the bass is less, then consider adding a 7040.At first, I intended to buy eve sc203, and it was also a very nice little stereo. I checked a lot of information on the Internet, also went to the physical shop auditions, sc203 sound quality and resolution compared to 8010a, I prefer 8010a, and I think 8010a is more professional.

Great sound in a compact size

I bought these after selling my krk 5s since I needed something smaller. I thought these would be perfect as they would both be a step up quality wise whilst downsizing my setup.

My main concern was about the lack of bass, which thankfully disappeared after hearing a variety of songs and testing a sine wave sweep. The bass is actually audible much lower than I thought (even around 40hz or so - around the same as the krk!)

They are as detailed as the bigger Genelecs and have the same sound too, I was pleasantly surprised to hear how great they sounded with almost any type of music, from Hendrix to Miles Davis, Noisia to movie soundtracks... it all sounded wide, clean and precise.

As for the issues I have with these, they occured when working on different tracks. I definitely noticed how "colder" they sounded compared to the KRKs, which I expected as I know KRKs are hyped in the midrange. I was a little disappointed with how boomy they sounded too, they peak quite a lot around 100hz and it's definitely noticeable when you're trying to do a clean mix. I changed the settings behind the speakers and tried as many combinations as I could, the only one really making a difference was the bass tilt/desktop control which helped a bit, but not hugely.

Nonetheless once you get to know them they are amazing little things and deliver a clean precise punch, and are perfect for anyone who needs big sound with limited space. Highly recommended!

Great monitors for the price

I was suprised I didn't miss the low end while monitoring on these speakers. Somehow they seem even more precise then my previous Genelec 8030's. If you can miss some low end and monitor in a small room I would highly recommend them. They are small, portable and affordable in comparison with monitors of the same quality that have more low end.

Excellent monitors

At the smallest end of the Genelec 8000 bi-amplified monitor series is the 8010A. Though relatively light (1.5kg each), the 8010As are solid thanks to the die-cast aluminium enclosure, with metal driver grilles to prevent damage in transit.

Portability is key, with power and input sockets neatly tucked in at the rear. They come with tiltable Iso-Pod rubber stands attached, simultaneously taking care of axis angle and transmission reduction. They feature standard 8000 series mounting sockets for a variety of options, from truss hanging to floor stands.

These are rear ported (bass reflex) enclosures, and just beneath the port is a recess housing five dip switches. Three contour the low-frequency response: -2dB and -4dB bass tilts which combine for -6dB, and Desktop Control which dips -4dB at 200Hz.

A Sensitivity switch pads the input by -10dB to adjust the external volume control range. The ISS disable control switches off the auto-standby mode, which drops power to below 0.5W when no input signal is present.

Big sound

The 8010As have a maximum output around 96dB SPL at 1m - a realistic listening distance for this size monitor. We were initially taken aback by how large these tiny speakers sound. Once trimmed to match our main monitors, flicking between them is audibly less dramatic than expected, though they have temporarily replaced a pair of Auratones, so we shouldn't be surprised.

Having become accustomed to them we continue to be impressed by the low-frequency response in particular. Though running out of steam a good octave above their larger neighbours, they still ably translate bass components without over-compensating in the low mids/upper bass.

Being in a well damped room we haven't had to use the bass tilt controls, but the Desktop dip of -4dB at 200Hz helped clear up a muddiness caused by proximity to the mixing desk.

The clarity in the lower end of the frequency spectrum is testament to a quality design that keeps things tight enough to easily identify mix clashes. The solid enclosure combined with a well-balanced woofer (stiffness vs flexibility) provides a fast, punchy response with no overt ring-on.

Balanced and accurate

At the top-end the 8010As possess a smooth characteristic, accurate and free from hyping. As with the low-end, there is less extension than on much larger models, though to a lesser extent, so fine adjustments in the 'air' range are harder to perceive.

The mid-frequencies are well-balanced and accurate, making mixing and tonal decisions quick and easy. This also helps with depth perception, by which we mean the ability to pick out reverb tails, natural decays and relatively quiet sources behind dominant mix components.

The acoustic design of the enclosure and the wave guiding of the front baffle that covers the whole 8000 series allows excellent off axis response and stereo field accuracy. We've been quite happy leaning across to an EQ to make HF adjustments without losing any reference due to strong phase shifts.

Genelec monitors are not cheap and, considering the quality of design, components and sound, nor should they be. The quality of the 8010A is no exception and easily worth the price. If you are regularly on the move they will make a great investment, combining portability and durability equal to the calibre of sound.

There is enough scope for response adjustment to suit any number of mounting situations, from desktops to stands, and there's plenty of power to use even in large spaces

Professional speakers are cute

8010 out of the sounds are more clear, full, vivid, richer details, positioning more accurate, musical instruments, sound position, three-dimensional feeling more strengthened,

The treble is higher and brighter. If it is metaphorically, it's like flying before, flying under the clouds, now flying and flying to the clouds.

The tenor is more condensed, close, voice more mellow, but compared with AMPS + full frequency sound, less flavor, more dental.

With pictures to compare words, the previous full frequency is relatively soft screen, and now the 8010 picture is relatively sharp. But do not know is not used to this kind of style 8010, or not according to the environment on the 8010 sensitivity switch for regulation, sometimes I feel 8010 voices, too sharp, a bit harsh.

Most of the bass beyond my previous 4 inch, contrary to expectation, the bass is soft, like take the watermelon, the watermelon voice is stuffy, Bang Bang is sound; and 8010 bass is more powerful, more condensed, like when take the watermelon, the watermelon's voice is crisp, is the Dong Dong sound; but the previous 4 inch bass, will feel the whole watermelon a bang bang bang sound, now 8010 bass, will only feel a part of a watermelon in the voice of Dong dong. Listen, 8010 sounds better, but a little less than enough.
