Harley Benton Valuestrings Bass 45-105 Reviews
very good
If you need strings, just buy them. If you're a snob and would not dream of buying these, buy then anyway and keep them in the case for emergencies. they work well.
Great sound for little money.
Replaced my factory strings which feels quite old with this cheap harley benton strings. The strings feels quite nice, and well packaged. It is not as bright as the factory strings (warwick bass) but for this price it is quite good.
Pros: Price. String surfaces feels okay.
Cons: darker sounding (compared to my warwick factory string)
High quality for small buck!
Very good sounding and good durability on those. For the price, it does not get any better.
Good Value even with the postage!
So I bought a stack of these for abot £4.50 a set (including the £10 postage).
I thought what the hell, if they're awful, I'll just pop them on some of the home use basses lying around.
I've waited untill they've been properly gigged before passing comment. I have used them on a couple of rehersals last week as well.
Tension/Feel
They're pretty slack but I quite lack that, they're also fairly rough on the fingers to start with but that sorted itself out after a couple of hours and they didn't feel any worse than other branded nicklewound strings that Ive used (rotos, La Bellas, Legacy)
Sound
Nice and bright to start, 2 rehersals and a gig later still zingy with lots of snap, how long they will last is the big question. Im not a sweaty player so we'll see. I did notice a dead spot on the bottom G (3rd fret E string) and Im hoping thats the strings and not the neck! They gigged fine, no one complained and even the guitarist who hated the Harley Guitar strings I got him was surprised how bright they still sounded.
Value
Well obviously good value
Overall conclusion
Early days but quite promising. Are they as good as my old Hard Rocking Steels? No. As good as the legacy (from strings direct), yes.
They're good enough to cut through in the racket we make and at that price I think Im going to give them a chance, even if they start to fade a few gigs down the road, just pop a fresh set on.
Like a cheap wine if that's your thing
Do not cut your old strings trying those, because you will be putting them back.
The only good thing about those strings is price.
They are Way too short. E string barely reached the peg and that was closest to the nut. I have impression that only core is under tension. They may be long enough for a short scale but there was no information about length in the description. A and E are completely dead only D, G are barely acceptable. Actually I never used strings long enough to be as dead as those right out of the package. Very rough surface. More resembling one of those wire saws you can find in survival kits rather than strings.
Final word: rather boil your old strings than buy those. Spend one more night practising instead of going to a pub and you will be able to buy a decent set.
Good strings for the money
Considering the price, these strings perform quite good.
Sound is very close to other more expensive brands (if not almost identical to some). I've made an A/B test with d'addario nicke xl and there is almost no difference, besides Bentons sounding a bit fresher compared to a bit broken in d'addarios,
As with most strings, the main difference comes from feel under the fingers (tension, texture). Bentons feel a bit rougher, almost like stainless steel strings, but it does not bother me, although you would expect a bit smoother feel from nickel plated strings. The tension is comparable to d'addarios.
Other than that, the strings are okay. They come with orange silk wraps on both ends, which is a nice touch, it protects the machine heads from getting scratched. They are also individually vacuum packed, I believe it helps protect the strings from the elements when they are stored, so you don't get bad strings fresh out of the package.
All in all, they are good budget strings, and a worthy contender to warwick's red labels, which were the cheapest until the Bentons came, at half the price of warwicks.
Great value !
I use these strings on my harley benton bass on standard tuning. They do their job pretty good. No Harley Benton product let me down and thats why i tried this set.
I didn't expect too much because of their low price but they turned out to be really good!
I can get the amount of "clang" that want and thats enough for me.
Also they keep their brightness for 7-8 days and its nice considering their price.
You can't go wrong with this product !!
Very, very good value roundwound strings
When I saw the price of these nickel plated roundwound strings I couldn't believe it. I couldn't resist to try those...and I'll tell you, they left me pleasantly surprised!
They sound and react pretty much as a typical set of strings of this type should, if not the sound isn't that much bright at the beginning maybe, but honestly I'm loving these strings because of that! They are clear and bright, mind you, it's just that they are not the brightest strings in my experience.
Silk is light orange, if you have to know that.
Tension is medium high, so the sound is punchy and bold. Very nice indeed!
Great and affordable
I have very sweaty hands and these don't get rusty after a month or lose brightness, been using these packs for over 4 years never had anything complain about it, you wont find anything as good in the market for that price believe me I've searched
Can't beat the buck for value on these.
I purchased these a while back, simply for testing them out. Harley Benton products have so far done right by me, so I wanted to check out their el-cheapo strings.
Wound them up on my bass, tuned to drop C, and the got going. Though they're in no means the 'perfect' strings, no set out there really is. They sounded out nice, a little short on the sustain, but really good lows and even the high-end sounded ok.
Point of it all? Even if they had been priced the cost of any decent brand set (i.e. 25-40) I'd still think they'd be ok. But priced at around the 5 euro mark, these are just brilliant.
They've kept up their sound even after some months, and right now I'd restring any set of strings anyway.
Pretty good bang for the buck.
You get what you pay for
These are not great strings but look at the price... Some things are worth paying a little extra for, I think strings are worth it. However if I was going through a set a week then I would probably be happy enough using these.
They feel quite rough to my fingers, and they seem to lose their zing quite quickly..... But again... The price...
Light feel, meaty sound
Very Impressed. I got these strings out of of the package and my immediate thought is that they'd be too light to sound any good. I was very wrong.
They sound great, with just the right amount of growl and clang when you turn up the treble. Roll off the treble and they have a lovely smooth tone.
They feel really nice under the fingers and let you skip about better than a higher gauge string.
Price wise, difficult to beat. I'm not sure if they'll last as long as the last set of strings on my bass (I'm ashamed to say I kept them on there way too long), but they seem very well made.
Super value
I got these for a throwabout bass i use for occasional recording... i was not sure as the price was so low but they're incredible, still going strong after even playing a few gigs with them on and I can't hear or feel any difference between these and 'name' brands.
Great strings, great value
This is more or less what I wrote for the 5-string version of these strings. I think strings are an important component of how the instrument feels, and I am not usually inclined to be a cheapskate when buying them. However, these play as well as other brand strings and really do not cost as much.
Some corners may have been cut, but in the end they just play quite well. I find the tension might be a little lower?and to be perfectly honest, it seems to me that they might be ever-so-slightly thinner than other strings of the same gauge (as advertised on the pack).
This is in no way a deal breaker, though. I mostly install them on my cheaper basses, but now I have a set on a nicer Jazz Bass and they play very well.
They seem to have a very decent lifespan. Perhaps they are not quite as bright as other brands when new, but they do keep their brightness for quite a while.
In conclusion, these are nice strings, could go well on any bass, really, and at this point my only complaint is that they do not do any six string version, which would be nice as nowadays I mainly play a sixer. Other than that, I highly recommend them.
Decent strings!
Cheap strings, but not bad for the price!
As far as I can tell, they've performed just as well as more expensive strings - and sound pretty decent!
It'd be interesting to do an A / B test between this and some more expensive strings, I wonder what the differences would be.
Even if for whatever reason you don't like these strings, I would recommend getting a few sets to keep around as spares!
Incredible
So cheap, yet they hold tune and are playable for such a long time, as good or better than budget strings of more well known brands.
If only Harley Benton produced a flatwound version of these strings...
good for the price
Good, cheap bass strings. Excellent for home use and for beginers.
For beginners
It's hard to complain about the strings that have a very low price, but I'll try. Something is really strange under my fingers when I play this strings , but maybe I'm used to expensive one. In fact it seems that the upper structure of tone are very unclean. Intonation after a certain time is not correct. It all depends how much you play. Of course, that low price keeps this product irresistible for most bass players, and therefore we should not expect anything spectacular from them.
Good Value
I got these just to restring a non-descript bass("Rockwood") that our drummer has had forever...good value, sound just fine!
They Do The Job
These are not premium strings, and that's evident from the price-tag. However, they sound perfectly fine considering the low price. They're strong and reliable. They can be a little rougher on the fingers than other brands, but that's not much of a complaint.
Not the best strings you'll ever use, but certainly effectivr budget strings.
